3 Our Mission Statement Take Stock in Children breaks the cycle of poverty for at-risk students by providing them a post-secondary education. Our success is measured by those students who successfully graduate, thus contributing to the economic viability of their communities.

7 The Types of Scholarships We Provide Florida Prepaid Scholarship Awarded to student who enter our program in middle school Covers 60 credits at the college rate and then 60 credits at the university rate 2 Year Florida Prepaid Scholarship Awarded to students who enter our program in 9 th grade Covers 60 credits at the college rate Broward College Bound Awarded to students who enter our program in 11 th grade Covers 2 years at Broward College only Pathway Scholars at Nova Southeastern University Awarded to selected graduating seniors with a 3.5 GPA Covers 4 years of tuition, room-and-board, and books at Nova Southeastern University Provides paid internships and mentors in the business sector
8 Student Status Active: A s, B s, C s (2.0 or higher) Warning: First time receiving below a C or 4+ unexcused absences per marking period Probation 1: Second time in a row receiving below a C or 4+ unexcused absences per marking period Probation 2: Third time in a row receiving below a C or 4+ unexcused absences per marking period Removal: After three consecutive quarters, their file will be reviewed for removal.
9 Steps to Begin Mentoring Submit your application and attend a joint training and fingerprinting session. Questions about the criminal history record check? Please call: (754) * Receive your Clearance and Match Letters Contact the School Coordinator and/or Student Advocate to set up the first meeting with your mentee. The School Coordinator is the liaison between TSIC and the school. The Student Advocate is your mentee s case manager and oversees that he/she is upholding his/her part of the TSIC contract. Begin Mentoring! Remember to sign-in to the Mentor Login Book in the front office before every meeting. Use the support resources online, in the mentor toolkit, and bring a game, get creative!
10 The DOs & DON Ts of Mentoring DOs Meet for 30 minutes every week Listen, be supportive, and have patience Use the Mentor Login Book to sign in/out Report any harmful behavior Be aware of cultural differences Exchange contact information Contact TSIC if you can no longer mentor DON Ts Meet outside of the school Transport your mentee in your vehicle Skip your meeting Just stop showing up without notifying TSIC Be judgmental Lend or give money to your mentee Forget your own adolescence
11 The Student Advocate Visits your mentee on a quarterly basis after report cards are issued. Meets individually with your mentee if he/she receives a warning or is on probation. Gives your mentee a Student Success Plan and weekly progress reports if he/she gets a warning or is on probation. Sends letters to notify you, your mentee s parents, and his/her School Coordinator of any changes in your mentee s status.
12 The College Enrollment & Retention Advocate Develops educational plans that outline and map your mentee s key educational and career goals. Reviews FCAT, SAT, and ACT scores, as well as GPAs to ensure that your mentee is on track for graduation and ready for college-level course work. Holds countywide workshops for preparing for tests, completing financial aid applications, assessing career goals, improving writing skills, budgeting, and surviving college. Provides follow-up for the first 18 months after high school graduation.
