8 2 Course description 2.1 Course objectives In order to deliver effective and durable project results in the complex and dynamic world of today, leadership and teamwork knowledge and skills for project managers are essential. It is necessary that project leaders motivate team members to perform and behave in accordance with the expectations of the sponsor and ordering party and that team members cooperate effectively and in harmony with each other and with the surrounding organization and other stakeholders in an international context in order to attain success. 10 2 Course description 2.1 Course objectives personal profiling is a moment for MPM students to broaden their view (or scope) on project management in general. In this masters program we offer room for specialization. Students can choose any of 4 tracks provided. 18 2 Course description 2.1 Course objectives This master module provides the require knowledge and understanding of the broad field of corporate strategy and general management. It aims to give insight in and make you become sensitive of the business and environmental context in which your project operates. This module opens your eyes for the business surroundings and pressures which every project is embedded in. It deals with the language of business and business objectives, which must be acceptable to organizational stakeholders and coalitions before any strategy can be implemented. 2.2 Course contents Topics that are dealt with in this master module include: Gaining strategic insight and knowledge of the business context by exploring the success factors of highly successful companies and to take advantage from the lessons to be learned from the experiences of these companies. Among the themes that will be discussed are: leadership, people management, analyses of the (business) environment, vision, mission, strategy, corporate culture, the role of (information) technology, etc.; Gaining knowledge and insight on defining characteristics of program and portfolio management within the context of an organization aiming to achieve it s strategic business objectives. The student is capable to develop authentic research based contributions to the body of knowledge on project management. 2.2 Course contents In culmination of your studies in the Master of Project Management you have to conduct research on a topic that is related to your work environment in the field of project management. This research is referred to as the Thesis. During the research period you will learn more about the practice and the topic of your interest. Besides acquiring knowledge you will develop skills as a researcher and make a contribution to the field of knowledge about this topic. Finally you have to defend this thesis. 22 2 Course description 2.1 Course objectives Value driven Project Management concerns itself with the continuous measurement of the contributions of programs or projects to the strategic goals of an organization. Through thorough analysis of required business changes alternative solutions are identified. Costbenefit analysis of the alternatives is performed in which financial and non-financial goals have a weighted contribution to the end result, thus showing the best choice in terms of contributions to the organizational goals. Value driven Project Management also concerns itself with the uncertain aspects of the project and the Business Case. What can go wrong, or can be optimized beyond expectation? Which threats are around and which opportunities? Not only to the project itself, but also to the resulting deliverables and the environment in which those results are going to be used. The course offers structural ways to deal with uncertainty of outcome (whether positive or negative), thereby minimized the impact of risks and optimizing the use of opportunities. 2.2 Course contents The following themes are elaborated on: The concepts, processes and techniques of Business Case and Value Management, including the integral aspect of Budgeting.
