2 Building Commission Practical Trade Assessment Information Sheet Course Requirements Participants are required to supply their own PPE, pens, paper and calculator. Safety Clothing & Footwear Trade quality shirt or polo (100% cotton drill approx 190gsm) Trade quality pants (100% cotton drill approx 310gsm) Steel capped work boots (AS/NZS 2210) - in good condition Purpose of Test The purpose of completing a Building Commission Practical Trade Assessment is to provide evidence to the Board that a person has proficiency to the level as prescribed by the Building Commission. This assessment is usually required of those who have not completed an apprenticeship in this industry, however believe that they have acquired the equivalent practical experience. Assessors Assessors who conduct the Building Commission assessment are qualified tradespersons in their own right. They have many years of experience in the industry and are qualified to Certificate IV in Assessment & Workplace Training (BSZ40198) or equivalent. Tools You may either bring your own tools, brushes, rollers, etc. or you may choose to use the Registered Training Organisation s tools and equipment, which are to trade standard. Materials All paints and sundry items required for the assessment will be supplied by the Registered Training Organisation. Proof of Identity Prior to commencing the assessment, proof of your identity will be required. Either, presentation of a driver s license with your photograph, passport or Statutory Declaration is acceptable. Results At the completion of the assessment, the assessor will provide you with his/her observations. This will be provided verbally. A written report with the assessment results will be sent to the Building Commission. A copy of the report can be mailed to you upon request. Building Commission Appeal Process There is an appeal process when the candidate disagrees with the assessor s findings. The candidate will be required to lodge a formal written appeal direct to the PRB. Re-Sit If the Board does not feel you are competent, you may re-sit the assessment at a future time. It is suggested that you obtain more experience or training in the areas you are deemed not competent prior to re-attempting the assessment. Contents of Assessment There are fifteen (15) competencies in the assessment and they are all considered Essential. You will be required to demonstrate competence for all the competencies as listed below: PAINT REMOVAL Your knowledge of various tools and equipment used in the industry to remove paint will be assessed. You should be able to identify them, describe technique when used, state some of the advantages and disadvantages between them, and list any safety procedures necessary when in use. PAINTING SKILLS You will be required to paint either a ceiling or wall using a water-based product by brush and roller. Your ability to prepare the surface, cut-in and apply 1 coat by roller will be assessed. Factors such as accurate cutting-in skills, roller application technique will be observed. It will be important that no misses, runs, sags, roller marks or thick edges are visible. Protection of surrounding surfaces is important. PATCHING EXERCISE You will be required to mix an interior filler to its correct consistency to repair a small to medium size hole, crack, or dent. Your preparation of the damaged area prior to filling, appropriate abrasive to smooth the filler when dry and your knowledge of exterior fillers will be assessed. PAINTING A WINDOW (1 side)

3 You will be assessed as to the selection of brush size used, application technique, and procedure used to apply an oilbased coating to a window. No runs, sags, misses or lap marks should be visible. PAINTING DOOR FRAME (1 side) You will be assessed as to the selection of brush size used, application technique, and procedure used to apply an oilbased coating to a door frame. No runs, sags, misses or lap marks should be visible. PAINTING DOOR (Flush Panel Brush ONLY) You will be assessed as to the selection of brush size used, application technique, thinning of paint, to apply gloss enamel coating to a flush panel door and its edge. Only a brush may be used for this competency. No runs, sags, misses or lap marks, thick edges on face of door should be visible. PAINT GUTTER/FASCIA (2 colours Wet-on-Wet) You will be assessed as to how you erect an appropriate scaffold to prepare and apply gloss enamel, to a length of gutter and fascia, two-tone. Your selection of brush, abrasive and your neat cutting in with no evidence of runs, sags, misses or lap marks will be assessed. STAINING OF TIMBER You will be required to prepare a raw timber surface prior to applying a stain. Your selection of abrasive and method of removing timber faults prior to applying the stain will be considered as well as method of applying stain. Following application of stain with no evidence of timber imperfections, misses, or the obliteration of the grain should be evident. The stain should be of even colour and intensity over the entire surface. HEALTH AND SAFETY The assessor will observe your consciousness to safety and cleaning up of equipment during the assessment. This includes your dress, footwear and any protective equipment you use during the assessment. You may be asked some questions about types of protective equipment available for the painting industry. COLOUR MATCHING You will be required to colour match (by eye) an amount of white water-based paint to a colour selected from a colour chart. The tinter(s) you select and the satisfactory achievement of the match will be assessed. It is important that you do not waste paint during the process such as over tinting and then having to add more white paint. The colour match will be assessed when it has dried. Questions about your knowledge of paint bases will be asked. SURFACE PREPARATION & COATINGS SYSTEMS You will be verbally questioned as to your knowledge of the appropriate preparation required and first coat of paint you would apply to a number of new surfaces commonly found in a building. DECORATIVE FINISHES You will be asked to visually identify a variety of decorative finishes common in the painting industry. If you are able to describe how they are applied or achieved it would be advantageous. TEXTURE Your knowledge of texture coatings will be assessed particularly in relation to the methods of application possible. Included will be questions about preparation and sealer coats required for a variety of surfaces. AIRLESS SPRAY Your knowledge of airless spraying will be assessed particularly in relation to safety issues with this type of spraying and type of pumps available. You should be able to identify the main components of the machine, and explain the priming procedure. Your knowledge of spraying procedures, maintenance and tip coding will be assessed. You will be required to set-up, operate and shut-down a machine. Your knowledge of other types of spraying systems used in the industry will be also considered. WALLPAPER Your knowledge of wallpapering will be assessed from a supervisor position. You will be asked to explain what preparation procedures you would follow for a variety of new and pre-painted surfaces prior to applying wallpaper. Your ability to describe methods of wall covering removal techniques will be assessed. You will be asked what critical aspects you would look for to determine whether a wall covering project has been completed to a professional standard.
