Why think about REF 2020 now? Underpinning research published between Impact must occur in REF period (Jan 2014 September 2019) September 2015 = 20% of the way through impact period
REF definition of impact Effect on, change or benefit to the economy, society, culture, public policy, services, health, environment or QoL Includes change or benefit outside academia to the activity, attitude, awareness, behaviour, capacity, opportunity, performance, policy, practice, process or understanding of an audience, community, constituency, organisation or individuals in any geographic location. Includes reduction or prevention of harm, risk, cost or other negative effects
Impact REF 2014 For each UOA impact = 20% Overall statement of the strategy and actions to support research impact (20%) Case studies = 1 + 1/10fte (80%) Four star Outstanding impacts in terms of their reach and significance Three star Very considerable impacts in terms of their reach and significance Two star Considerable impacts in terms of their reach and significance One star Recognised but modest impacts in terms of reach and significance
Case study template
What makes a good case study? Outstanding (4*) or Very considerable (3*) reach and significance Reach = spread or breadth of influence or effect Significance = intensity of influence or effect Underlying research predominantly of at least 2* quality Evidence of a strategy to facilitate impact Evidence that the strategy was implemented Evidenced audit trail from research to impact
What doesn t Research Excellence Framework Impact must be shown to be grounded on between 1-6 specific pieces of research Outputs that are directly relevant to the impact being claimed Evidence to support direct relevance Impact specific, evidenced, verifiable
LIHS 2014 Case studies (UoA 2 & UoA4) Making TB care more patient-centred in Nepal and Pakistan Transforming Stroke rehabilitation research and care Evidencing the effectiveness of psychological treatment for chronic pain
Informal review of case studies Summaries that specifically mention reach and significance Multiple types of impact with evidence (quant / qual) Conscious planning for impact from the beginning Brokers / ambassadors often crucial in generating impact Find ways for beneficiaries to have ownership of research / impact Reviewers may view policy impact less favourably than impacts that may come from policy change Some impact is hard to evidence; reviewers may just ignore these types of impact Don t let reviewers guess about scale of reach / significance Use external evaluation as much as possible for your corroboration of impact
What should we do NOW? Existing impact and near future impact completed research or current project (maturity) maximise impact of existing research e.g. identify users/decision makers and alert them to research collect evidence of impact importance of PPI in REF2020 Longer term future impact Pathways to Impact in grants Develop comprehensive KE plans throughout
What support is available? Preparing grant applications: Impact Toolkit (see leaflet) Informal review of Impact Summaries / Pathways to Impact etc in addition to new peer review processes. Generating and evidencing impact Personalised impact training & development (see leaflet) New systems to record impact evidence (being investigated) Support to develop & implement your REF preparation strategy.
