3 USAID and Winrock Developing a Sustainable Cookstove Sector Program Empowered Entrepreneur Training Handbook Developed through the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves: Dr. Anita Shankar (JHU) and Geneveive Smith (Visionaria Network) Part 1: Human Centered Design Part 2: Empowered Entrepreneur Handbook Part 3: Participant Packet
4 Who is the Handbook designed for and what you can expect from using it? Who: Organizations who are currently working with, or plan to work with, women entrepreneurs and/or sales agents What can you expect: ~50 hours (or 6 days) worth of business, empowerment and leadership training curricula Human-Centered Design (HCD) Plan and instructions to help you prepare a customized training Ultimately, the Handbook is designed to support organizations and its trainers in empowering women in their value chain USAID and Winrock Developing a Sustainable Cookstove Sector Program
5 Why agency-based empowerment? Empowerment has two components: Agency: internal ability Resources: external support Agency-based empowerment enhances one s capacity to create and focus on his/her goals
6 Research Findings & Evidence Agency-based empowerment training impacts health, development and wellbeing. Results from: o Urban and disenfranchised women in Kenya o Women living in Mathare slums in Kenya o HIV positive pregnant and lactating women in India o Women engaged in sex work in India Envirofit Pilots Kenya o Pilot study to show economic case for women- does impact sales o Women in the program sold 3x as many stoves Nigeria o Use of group-based model o Expanded business training Scale up in Kenya
7 Training topics Basic business & finance Core competencies & sex and gender. Topics include: Marketing Costing & pricing Financial planning Customer care and relationship building Recordkeeping Business models Empowerment - reflection on personal needs and goals Thoughts influence how we experience and live in the world. Topics include: Building trust in ourselves Identifying and appreciating one s strengths Developing positive mental habits Managing fear and risk Develop leadership skills and enhance leadership competencies Establishing & developing clear visions Setting goals & being proactive Problem solving Communication Action plans USAID and Winrock Developing a Sustainable Cookstove Sector Program
8 Certification Program Training of Trainers Workshops, Kenya and India Objectives Develop in-house expertise to train sales staff and entrepreneur partners Provide trainers with tools and facilitation techniques Roll out training curriculum to entrepreneurs with a special focus on gender-sensitive training approaches. Collect data on the impacts of this training curriculum and share results with the sector. Phase 1: Empowered Entrepreneur Trainer Certification Program Phase 2: Training for entrepreneur networks Phase 3: Monitoring of business, personal growth, and well-being impacts of the training
9 USAID and Winrock Developing a Sustainable Cookstove Sector Program Kenya Trainer Certification Program Nairobi, Kenya - August participants from 12 Organizations in 4 countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria) Pre-ToT homework / webinar 5 days of training, facilitation practice, action planning Follow up practicum homework, exam, practice trainings (September October) Empowerment section is making an impact in our lives [we] are being empowered as we train. A life time opportunity for us. Thanks we are growing by day. Can't wait to conduct training to our sales agents
10 USAID and Winrock Developing a Sustainable Cookstove Sector Program Kenya Training Roll Out 5 trainings completed 124 entrepreneurs trained 5+ in progress will be conducted Jan - March M&E phase (6-month follow up): base/end line surveys, sales information Many of [the trainees] said that the comprehensive marketing skills they received were comparative to what they could get in a year or more in a business school. One trainee said Thank you for helping me understand myself, I have lost so many opportunities because of my hopelessness, I promise by December you will testify of whom I will be, Watch this space!
