Introduction The material within this sample portfolio relates to: This portfolio is designed to demonstrate the types of evidence that could be produced for Unit 01 of the NCFE Level 1 Certificate in Business and Enterprise qualification (601/0315/2). It s designed to provide guidance on how a portfolio could look, rather than being prescriptive. Evidence may be submitted in a variety of forms. In this example there are written accounts and visual evidence, but the evidence could also be presented in an audio format. Where the candidate has provided visual evidence (for example screen grabs, copies of research), this has been clearly annotated to give context as to why it has been included. Each piece of evidence has been presented with the assessment criterion number detailed at the top of the page. This portfolio contains both actual evidence from a candidate and also manufactured evidence produced by NCFE. External Moderator guidance has been provided for each piece of evidence relating to an assessment criterion. The guidance comments on how the evidence meets the assessment criterion and what could be improved to obtain a higher grade. The suggestions and assessment methods are not exhaustive and Teachers are encouraged to explore other methods which will support the candidate to produce the best evidence that they re capable of for the unit. For further advice on the suitability of a particular assessment method, you can refer to the relevant qualification specification or contact your NCFE External Moderator. It s strongly recommended that each unit is presented and assessed individually to allow accurate judgements about the candidate s competence. This will also make it easier to award a grade for the unit. The work must then be internally moderated and made available for the External Moderator. It s accepted that a piece of evidence may be presented for more than one unit. Where this is the case, the evidence must be clearly mapped to all the units and assessment criteria it applies to when presented to the External Moderator. 3

This will enable them to make an accurate judgement about the candidate s competence and overall unit grade. We would encourage the use of our Evidence and Grading Tracker document which is available from the qualifications page on our website although any method which clearly records the evidence against the assesment criterion may be used. 4

Assessment criterion 1.1 Identify characteristics of the business types Candidate evidence 5

External Moderator commentary The candidate has identified types of business. Limited liability has been listed as a characteristic. Assessment criterion 1.1 requires the candidate to identify characteristics of the business or enterprise. To achieve a Merit the candidate would need to develop their answer further to provide a description of the different business types, eg sole trader: a business owned by an individual who has unlimited liability for the business. To achieve a Distinction the candidate would need to develop their answer further to provide a detailed description of the different business types, eg sole trader: a business owned by an individual who has unlimited liability for the business and could lose everything. Grade awarded for this assessment criterion 1.1 Pass 6

Assessment criteria 1.2 Identify 2 types of local business 1.3 State what each business identified in 1.2 is about, showing: what it does how it is owned the type of people it employs 1.4 Present findings Candidate evidence 7

To achieve a Distinction, candidates would have identified 2 local businesses and justified their choices, eg I have chosen Four Seasons Floral Design as they have good reviews in the local area. Assessment criterion the candidate has identified what each business identified in 1.2 is about, showing what it does, how it s owned and the type of people it employs. To achieve a Merit, candidates would need also to show an understanding of the skills needed to work there, eg customer service skills and health and safety awareness. To achieve a Distinction, candidates would also need to provide realistic examples of the types of customer each business has, eg loyal customers or customers with a particular need. Assessment criteron the candidate has used PowerPoint to present their findings ( ) using a well-structured format, eg headings and clear paragraphs, with few spelling/grammatical errors. To achieve a Pass, candidates would present their findings using a basic format, eg no headings or structure, but relevant information would be included. To achieve a Merit, candidates would need to present their findings clearly, eg some structure with only some spelling and grammatical errors. 9

I confirm that this is all my own work. Candidate signature: Teacher/Assessor comments (please continue overleaf if necessary): The candidate has used presentation slides to show some of the characteristics of business types, within their evidence they have researched 2 different local businesses and have discussed what each business is about. They have therefore achieved a Pass for LO1, to achieved higher grades they would need to justify their choices for choosing these businesses and discuss the skills required to work in both businesses. For LO2 the candidate has used presentation slides to identify the skills and characteristics of an entrepreneur and have gone on to identify Richard Banson as an entrepreneur. They have been awarded a Pass for LO2, however to achieve higher grades they would need to identify another entrepreneur and provided another characteristic of Richard Banson. For LO3 the candidate has again used presentation slides to discuss some of the risks and rewards to a new business and enterprise and has achieved a Pass for this LO, to achieve a higher grade the candidate would need to identify a further reward. Finally for LO4 the candidate has within their slides defined what a project is, outlined a project idea, discussed the need to plan, identify the importance of planning and what should be included in a project plan. A good level of detail has been included, however to achieve a Merit the candidate would need to discuss some of the strengths and weaknesses of their idea. As the candidate has achieved mainly Pass grades an overall Pass has been awarded for this unit. 29
