1 The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) was set up as a statutory body on 11 June 2001 by the Minister for Education and Science. Under the Qualifications (Education & Training) Act, 1999, FETAC now has responsibility for making awards previously made by NCVA. Module Descriptor Stone Craft Level 4 L

2 1 Module Title Stone Craft 2 Module Code L Level 4 4 Credit Value 1 credit 5 Purpose This module is a statement of the standards to be achieved to gain a FETAC credit in Stone Craft at Level 4. It is an elective module leading to a FETAC Level 4 Certificate. It emphasises the safe use of tools and equipment. The learner will develop creative skills through the medium of stone. 6 Preferred Entry Level Learners who successfully complete this module will have gained knowledge and skills that will provide the basis for further training and employment. Level 3 Certificate, Junior Certificate or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences. 7 Special Requirements None. 8 General Aims Learners who successfully complete this module will: 8.1 Learn to handle stone masonry tools and equipment safely 8.2 Develop an awareness of the need for planning and design 8.3 Develop the basic skills necessary to carry out simple stone masonry assignments 9 Units The specific learning outcomes are grouped into 4 units. Unit 1 Unit 2 Unit 3 Unit 4 Tools & Equipment Preparation & Design Stone Masonry Techniques Safety 1

3 10 Specific Learning Outcomes Unit 1 Tools & Equipment Use a range of tools used in stone masonry to include: hand tools such as tools for measuring, marking and cutting Demonstrate competence in the care and maintenance of tools and equipment in evaluating the condition of tools & equipment prior to use Demonstrate competence in the care and maintenance of tools and equipment in cleaning the utensils correctly after use. Unit 2 Preparation & Design Demonstrate an awareness of the characteristics of materials and finishes used in stone to include: o outlining the basic properties of a range of materials (limestone, granite, sandstone, marble) o identifying a range of uses for each category of stone o selecting the correct stone for specific projects o applying suitable preparations and finishes to specific projects Analyse a design brief and apply the design process in stone masonry to include: o outlining the design process o interpreting a design brief o producing design solutions to stonemasonry assignments (sketches / working and assembly drawings) o producing working procedures for specific projects Unit 3 Stone Masonry Techniques Use a range of stone masonry techniques to include practical demonstration of: o marking out, cutting, shaping, assembly of a piece of work such as a straight wall o selecting the appropriate techniques and stone finishes for specific tasks 2

4 Unit 4 Safety Apply appropriate behaviour and safety measures in the use of hand tools including identifying potential safety hazards Use stonemasonry tools and equipment correctly and as outlined by the course Assessor Demonstrate the ability to work safely in a practical work setting to include: o correct use of tools and equipment o care & maintenance of the working environment o due regard for safety of self and others 11 Assessment Summary Portfolio of Course Work 60% Project 40% 11.1 Technique Portfolio of Coursework 60% In order to achieve this module candidates are required to present sufficient evidence to show that they have developed a range of appropriate practical skills and an ability to apply knowledge in the practical situation. This portfolio will include evidence of practical skills in using the correct tools and equipment. Candidates are required to produce evidence that demonstrates knowledge of stone as a material, and preparatory sketches for carrying out assignments. Candidates are required to follow appropriate safety procedures in the use of tools and equipment Technique Project 40% Candidates are required to undertake a project in response to a locally devised stone masonry brief. The evidence presented for this project should include: o preparatory sketches and research carried out o at least one stonemasonry technique o presentation and completion of the project item 12 Grading Pass 50-64% Merit 65-79% Distinction % 3
