That is why our Legal Services Centre (LSC) in Belfast is playing an increasingly important role in the way we deliver services to our clients. Throughout 2018, we will continue to recruit for exceptionally talented law graduates and junior qualified lawyers to join our team as Legal Professionals (LPs) and senior LPs. 3 04 THE LSC: WHO WE ARE 05 The LSC Who we are The LSC heralds a new way of working for A&O. Under the supervision of experienced lawyers, LPs apply their knowledge of the law and legal procedures to support A&O teams around the world. The LSC represents a relatively new approach to delivering legal services and, as you develop your skills and expertise, you can expect the opportunities to develop as the range of services is expanded. The LSC is consistently at the forefront of the intelligent use of legal technology. We are currently piloting a number of AI tools which focus on data extraction. We also work closely with the Legal Technology team based in the Belfast office on use of document automation and contract analysis platforms using search and machine learning. Allen & Overy is one of the world s emerging global elite of law firms, with a clear sense of direction, a challenging but collaborative culture and a desire to ensure our clients needs are at the forefront of all we do. 4 06 BUILD IT S LANDING A CAREER ON IN YOUR BELFAST FEET 07 It s landing on your feet At the LSC, you are exposed to work within a wide range of A&O s practice areas including: ICM, Corporate, Litigation, Arbitration, Banking and Intellectual Property. The work you undertake could involve a wide range of projects in multiple jurisdictions. On a typical day, you could be reviewing disclosure in litigation proceedings for the Dubai office, conducting legal research under instruction from associates in New York, as well as performing due diligence reviews on high profile matters for our London office. Lawyers in Belfast frequently play a leading role in the project management of a matter, making full use of a range of workflow and AI technology tools, promoting a more advanced approach to the provision of legal advice and services. A large number of our LPs have attended the Legal Technology & Innovation course hosted by Ulster University s Legal Innovation Centre. Our Belfast office, and its expertise in streamlining elements of complex projects, is critical to our ambition to deliver excellent client service through an innovative mix of resourcing models and technology. One of our senior LPs, who has become an integral part of the LSC s ICM team, says: My knowledge of ICM has grown immensely enabling me to assist with more challenging and complex matters. I attended A&O s ICM University in London where I got to meet fellow colleagues and learn about different ICM practice groups across A&O s global network. The opportunity for secondment may arise across various offices in the A&O network or client sites. Lawyers from Belfast have been seconded to work within the General Lending and Leveraged finance team in New York, multi-jurisdictional investment grade and real estate financings with the banking team in London and assisting on facets of litigation matters in Dubai. 5 0 8 P R E PA R I N G F O R W H AT S O N T H E H O R I Z O N Preparing for what s on the horizon Successful applicants will benefit from an extremely comprehensive training programme designed to complement their law degree. In addition to covering the commercial legal skills that are so important at a leading global organisation such as A&O, LPs will spend time at the beginning of their employment, in our London office meeting colleagues, learning how we work and experiencing our culture first hand. Our LPs undertake an intensive Business Law & Practice programme designed and delivered in Belfast by the University of Law, and receive skills-based training from A&O partners and senior lawyers. The training covers legal process and supervisory skills, as well as personal development. There are opportunities to attend internal legal training courses such as the firm s Universities of Banking, Corporate, Litigation and ICM, which are courses available to associates worldwide working in the main areas of the firm s practice. These courses offer senior LPs the opportunity to fully understand the legal and commercial rationale behind the work they do on a daily basis. It also provides further opportunities to work with colleagues from other international offices. The LSC has grown tremendously since it opened in 2012, allowing me and other senior LPs to take on a mentoring role to less experienced LPs when they join the firm. At this point, you will have an interview and undertake a case study-based task designed to test your ability to work under pressure whilst also assessing your commercial and critical acumen. Shortlisted candidates will then undergo a further interview with senior A&O staff to assess your skills, knowledge and motivation to join us. We welcome people who are brave, entrepreneurial and agile. People who aren t afraid to go beyond their comfort zone, and want to work at the forefront of their profession. You should be ready to embrace dramatic change, have a talent for problem-solving, and be keen to develop broad commercial awareness outside your chosen specialism. There s no such thing as a typical A&O candidate. We re open-minded and are interested in people who share that quality. You love reading around a subject and finding innovative solutions to problems. You re quick to identify patterns and trends, and you know how to put your knowledge to practical use. Our lawyers are taking part in various pro bono initiatives, for example, in the Lawyers in School project. In 2016, one of our LPs won a firm-wide competition to film and document a visit to Tanzania as part of our Global Charity Partnership, through our Corporate Responsibility Committee. During the trip, he accompanied partners, project managers and trainees, to get a sense of how the health and education focused projects were progressing 18 months into our partnership. This amazing experience highlights the opportunities that are open to everyone at A&O. In 2017, members of the LSC took part in a charity five-a-side football tournament in Amsterdam, representing Belfast against teams from our London, Paris, and other European offices, for War Child, our new global charity partner. This was a fantastic opportunity to meet a broad range of employees from other offices and practice groups.
