3 Introducing BMC Control-M Workload Change Manager BMC Control-M Workload Change Manager simplifies the process of creating new or changing an existing workload through a simple and intuitive web-based application. This new product empowers application developers and allows for better collaboration between the application teams and the scheduling staff. BMC Control-M Workload Change Manager enables enforcement of site standards and naming conventions, which helps to reduce errors and meet SLAs. About the Control-M Workload Change Manager Test Drive You are about to enter a live environment where you will be able to experience and interact with BMC Control-M Workload Change Manager. This brief document is your roadmap to help you maximize the benefits of the Test Drive experience by providing a quick overview and identifying the highlights of Workload Change Manager. To get the most from your test drive experience, watch the instructional video here. 1. Workload Change Manager web based interface The BMC Control-M Workload Change Managerweb based interface is the only interface exposed in the trial environment. This interface was designed for application developers and others in similar roles. It is meant to greatly reduce the amount of time and effort it takes for non-workload dedicated professionals to create and modify workloads. It provides a mechanism for job creation and job modification, but does not allow direct access to the permanent job repository. Access to this is controlled and allowed to only those with appropriate permissions through the Enterprise Manager GUI application. 2. Enterprise Manager GUI based interface The BMC Control-M Enterprise Manager GUI based interface is the primary interface used by schedulers and Control-M administrators. It is this interface that allows for configuration and administration of Workload Change Manager functionality. Access to this interface is not provided in the Workload Change Manager trial environment. However, some of the supporting material for the trial environment does show and discuss how Workload Change Manager capability is configured and used through this interface. PAGE 2 OF 9

4 Let s get started First, locate the welcome you received after registering for the BMC Control-M Workload Change Manager trial. This includes a link for launching the trial. If you have not yet registered for the trial, register here and the will be sent to you. Use the link in your Welcome to launch the BMC Control-M Workload Change Manager trial. Note the username and password; then, click Start your trial. Please note: All users in this environment are logging in with the same credentials. As a result, what you see when you access the environment may not appear exactly as described here. Additionally, although the Change Password function appears in the menu of choices, the password will not change even if you attempt to change it. PAGE 3 OF 9

5 Creating requests Once logged in you will see requests in the My Requests section. Depending upon their status you may be able to interact with these requests. Requests contain one or more jobs. You can create a new request by selecting the Create job flow icon. Give the job flow request a unique name and optionally enter an associated Change ID and notification address (you can make both of these up). Select OK when finished. PAGE 4 OF 9

6 Creating jobs Your new request is now ready for jobs. From the job palette in the upper left area of your screen drag a job type to the empty folder. Use the panel on the right side of the screen to enter values for the various fields. You can use the Validate option to see a report on the validity of all the fields in all of the jobs you have in your request. Requirements for the various fields are controlled by Workload Change Manager functionality, specifically site standards. Site standards are not controlled by you in the trial environment, they are preconfigured. In a production environment the workload team would control the site standards and configure them so you can create your jobs as quickly and as accurately as possible. You can watch this video to see more details on site standards. You can create any number of jobs you would like by continuing to drag and drop from the job palette to the folder. You may also create dependencies between the jobs by dragging and dropping from one job to another. PAGE 5 OF 9

7 Once you are finished creating your jobs you can select the Submit option. The submit function alerts the scheduling team there is a new request they need to act on. In the trial environment the experience ends here, but in a production environment actions the workload team could take include: Open your request and, if needed, modify the jobs and then promote into the production environment Open your request and suggest changes (via a notes feature which you can see more details on here) and then return the request to you in order for you to make the requested changes For more information about Workload Change Manager use the Getting started feature inside the web app. PAGE 6 OF 9
