3 Projects are initiated to Change the current situation Introduce something new Make something happen Fix a problem Get things done

4 Projects are not initiated to Develop methodologies Write lots of documentation Create absolute perfection Provide employment Spend money

5 Planning Work out WHAT is wanted: Vision / Purpose / Objectives Outcomes(achievable) Scope (what s in and what s not) Most probably something created, improved or eliminated Work out HOW to achieve this Deliverables, Resources, Plans, Relationships Keep your eyes on the GOAL Don t get sidetracked or high-jacked

6 Planning Planning Documents Strategies overarching approach, what & why Plans translate the Strategies into Tasks Schedules timeframes, resources for Tasks Keep documentation succinct Make sure they all align Use them (they re not shelf ornaments) Update and adjust/refine them as you go Maintain a Document Map

7 Achieving Scope Management Time / Resources / Scope PM triangle Achievable bite size chunks (How do you eat an elephant?) Avoid Scope Creep, getting sidetracked or bogged down! Risk Management Don t let what you can t do, stop what you can do Assume nothing, challenge facts, seek proof, chase up Creativity / Flexibility / Adaptability There s more than one way to skin a cat If you always do what you ve always done you always get what you ve always got Sportspeople change technique to improve scores

8 Achieving Journey of 1000 miles begins with the first step Or - in the immortal words of Nike (the Greek Goddess of Victory) Just do it!

9 Staying in there Everything should be made as simple as possible but no simpler (Einstein) Things must not only be done they must be seen to be done Believe in what you are doing Flexibility with integrity Know when to hold them, know when to fold them, know when to stand your ground, know when to run

10 People The Team Leaders must lead/inspire/motivate Managers must manage/organise Everyone needs to do their job Work out the skills and knowledge needed and recruit people who fit (not the other way around!) Aptitude is worth Bronze. Attitude is worth Silver. Attitude plus Aptitude is worth Gold! Communication is the key Be located together, meet regularly, talk, listen, share, encourage, teach, learn, respect, enjoy

11 People Stakeholders Identify critical influencers Build trust / involve them Manage expectations Be prepared to ride the tiger Consultation should not only be done, but be seen to be done. Do people feel they have been consulted? Communication is the key Be located nearby, meet often, talk, listen, share, encourage, teach, learn, respect, enjoy

12 Success Success does not mean achieving Perfection It means achieving what you set out to do Winners...Take Chances Like everyone else they fear falling but refuse to let fear control them... Don t Give up when life gets rough they hang in until it gets better... Are Flexible They realise there is more than one way and are willing to try... Know they are not Perfect They respect their weaknesses while making the most of their strengths... Sometimes Fall, but don t stay down They refuse to let a fall keep them from climbing... Don t blame Fate for their failures or luck for their successes... Accept Responsibility for their lives... Are Positive Thinkers who see the good in all things. From the ordinary they make the extraordinary... Believe in the Path they have chosen even when its hard, even when others can t see where they are going... Are Patient They know a goal is only as worthy as the effort required to achieve it
