From the Convenor Hello! An amazing opportunity with UN Youth Australia has opened for applications for 2018, and I am incredibly excited to share it with you. Pacific Project is a unique educational opportunity that provides the opportunity to learn and explore themes of sustainable development, grassroot projects and international aid and relations. The program is a year-long commitment, consisting of community fundraising and education, which culminates in a two-week trip to East Timor in July In East Timor, we will engage with our partner organisation Encouragement House, helping to teach English and assist volunteers. We will also interact with other non-governmental organisations, assisting with development projects they are running within the community. These interactions will cover a wide variety of interactions, from assisting with teaching, learning from locals and volunteers and even assisting with building amenities and infrastructure too! We will also be meeting with diplomats who work in East Timor, who will share their experiences and knowledge with us and will add greatly to the educational experience of the trip. One of the most valuable aspects of the tour is its strong focus on education and our desire to ensure that you gain more from the experience than just a sightseeing holiday. Pacific Project is run by experienced and enthusiastic UN Youth Australia facilitators, who will work in partnership with Destination Dreaming, an Australian not-for-profit education organisation. In July 2018, you could be involved in this incredible opportunity, with the chance to learn more about sustainable development and international relations, experience beautiful cities such as Dili, Maliana, Launa and Baucau, while also developing lifelong friendships with other delegates from all over Australia. This pack contains information about the tour: who the organisers are, what the tour involves, costs and travel dates, and information regarding our Welfare policy which ensures the safety and wellbeing of delegates whilst on Pacific Project. This opportunity is available to 12 students across Australia, who are selected through an application process the details of this can be found at the back of the application pack. If you have any questions at all, I would love to hear from you, so please do not hesitate to contact me via . I am beyond excited to hear from you, and hope to receive your application! MOLLY BRAND Convenor molly.brand@unyouth.org.au
About The Organisers About UN Youth Australia UN Youth Australia is a national youth-led charity, coordinated entirely by young volunteers aged We are dedicated to educating young people about international relations, providing an avenue for the expression of youth opinion and empowering young people to engage with society. Through its eight divisions in each state and territory, UN Youth Australia provides an impressive array of events each year for secondary and tertiary students centred around global affairs. We equip students with the skills and the confidence needed to voice their opinions, and to make positive changes on local, national and global levels. We believe in the value of peer-to-peer education and have been insipring young students for decades to become engaged with the world around them. For more information on UN Youth, please visit our website at Destination Dreaming Destination Dreaming is an Australian not-forpro t social education company that works with schools and community groups to create global community partnerships. Through these mutually beneficial on-going partnership programs we teach young people about the importance of culture, community, happiness, social justice and human rights. Established in 2004 we have created on-going partnerships in Indigenous Australia, The Fijian Islands, Samoa, Timor-Leste, Laos and Cambodia. Destination Dreaming and UN Youth Australia have been in partnership since 2009 delivering outstanding global experiences for delegates that provide practical opportunities to develop as active global citizens. Destination Dreaming prioritize safety and wellbeing. Our operating systems are continually reviewed and updated, and planning is modified based on the individual program run. All their leaders carry detailed manuals, specifying their operational procedures and emergency evacuation plans and risk management plans. The staff members who will lead our trip hold current remote leader s first aid qualifications.
About Pacific Project By the end of this year, 12 students from around Australia will be selected to participate in Pacific Project Pacific Project is a year-long commitment, centered around a two-week trip to East Timor. There, you will have the opportunity to work with our community partner, Encouragement House in Maliana, helping out with projects that are driven by them and making the most of the unique opportunity to share and learn from each other. Pacific Project is a unique experience that gives delegates a practical understanding of the processes and practices of building partnerships throughout the Asia-Pacific region, in an effort to aid sustainable and responsible development programs. More than that, it involves a special sharing of information, friendship and values, where you will learn from Timorese people and they will learn from you. In addition to working with community organisations, you will also have the chance to meet with diplomats at Australia s Embassy in East Timor. It truly is the experience of a lifetime. When you return from East Timor, you will continue engaging with your local community in Australia by raising funds to support projects that have been deemed sustainable throughout the trip, and that are valuable to and driven by the organisations we have been with. This is an important aspect of the project because it ensures that Pacific Project and the work we contribute to remains sustainable. We run Pacific Project in partnership with Destination Dreaming, an Australian non- for profit education organisation who will accompany us during our time in East Timor. Destination Dreaming is integral to the educational and community experience. They also provide expert safety and logistical advice.
Cost and Payment Schedules The cost of Pacific Project in 2018 is estimated to be $ 6750 AUD. It is important to note that this cost is an estimate; the leadership team will continue to explore opportunities for minimising costs in the lead up to the tour, and the fee also may need to change in response to flight costs increasing or other unforeseen circumstances. This tour cost will be paid in several installments in the lead up to departure in July The prices includes: - Domestic flights to and from your capital city to Darwin return. - International flights from Darwin to Dili return - All accommodation in Darwin and East Timor - Travel through East Timor - Local guides and Timorese support staff - All scheduled activities - Comprehensive travel insurance - All food and drink in East Timor. You can bring some spending money for souvenirs and snack food. For this, we would recommend no more than $100AUD. Seeking Sponsorship We encourage you to try and seek sponsorship in order to support the costs of the project. We will provide a detailed sponsorship guide, as well as support and coaching, to aid delegates in seeking individual financial support for their tour fees. These packages will not only provide a basis for you to write a pitch to the entities from which you seek assistance, but also contain advice sourced from world leading financial institutions in how effective sponsorship pitches are made. Delegates on past tours have had great success with finding sponsorship. You ll also run fundraising with your fellow delegates after the trip to ensure that your help in the community remains sustainable. Our facilitators also pay to attend Pacific Project, so we understand that finding the money can be difficult. If cost presents a barrier to your participation in Pacific Project, please do not hesitate to contact Molly Brand at molly.brand@unyouth.org.au You may also need to spend some money in the lead up to the tour on vaccinations (see welfare information on the next page).
Delegate Welfare Policies UN Youth Australia and the Pacific Project Leadership Team place a priority on safety and take welfare incredibly seriously. Each UN Youth Australia Facilitator will possess an Apply First Aid Certificate (formerly Senior First Aid) and a Mental Health First Aid Certificate. In addition, our partner leaders from Destination Dreaming have extensive experience in East Timor and undertake extensive risk management assessments and emergency evacuation plans, as well as possessing Remote First Aid qualifications. UN Youth Australia has a comprehensive Federal Welfare Policy, which we will ensure is complied with in the lead up to, throughout and after Pacific Project in Our priority is ensuring that you are safe, respected, and happy and enjoy the project as much as possible. It is a requirement that all delegates agree to and complete the delegate code of conduct and first aid consent form as part of their online application. Also included in the application are the Welfare Arbitration Procedures that we use in the event of a breach of the Welfare Policy. The welfare policies are there to ensure that both facilitators and delegates have the best possible time on the Pacific Project, that we all stay healthy and able to enjoy ourselves to the greatest possible extent. It is crucially important that you understand your rights and responsibilities as per the Welfare Policy if you or your parents have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us. The full UN Youth Australia Welfare policies are available in the application form (and it is a requirement that you read them), but we have summarised the important content on the next page. It is important that all welfare information is disclosed to us so that we can arrange things and ensure that the facilitator team is able to assist everyone in having a positive experience on the tour. In order to ensure that we can maximise your safety, enjoyment and participation in the event, you will be required to submit a Welfare Management Plan, if you identify as having a serious health condition (including all chronic illnesses, mental health conditions for which you are taking medication, and any injury or disability that limits your full participation in Conference events). Your Welfare Management Plan must be written by a medical professional typically your GP. We will contact any delegates whom we believe this applies to about creating a Welfare Management Plan as part of the confirmation process.
Delegate Welfare Policies Discrimination and Harassment UN Youth has a non-discrimination and anti harassment policy. Delegates are expected to treat each other with respect and dignity, in the knowledge that any form of discrimination or harassment (sexual or otherwise) will not be tolerated. Directions of the Leadership Team It is expected that all reasonable directions of the leadership team (and any sanctions imposed under the welfare arbitration procedures) will be followed by delegates. Alcohol, tobacco and other substances Delegates (and facilitators) are not permitted to drink and/or smoke throughout the tour, regardless of whether it is permissible under local law. (E.g. 18-year-old delegates must not consume alcohol in Darwin.) Drugs and other substances not legal in Australia are not to be consumed by delegates, regardless of laws. Medication If delegates are on any regular or prescription medicine, this needs to be brought to the attention of the Leadership Team. Delegates are advised to discuss taking medications out of the country with their doctor prior to departure if they plan to do so. Be aware that it may be difficult to obtain prescription medications after leaving Australia. Consent for medical treatment As part of the registration process, you will need to consent to the Leadership Team performing first aid or seeking further medical treatment as required. Travel insurance in included in the cost of the trip, so this should not result in out-of pocket expenses. Breaking the Rules Delegates who breach the welfare policy and/or delegate agreement will be subject to arbitration under the Welfare Policy. In short, this process has three stages: 1. The leadership team takes action to ensure/ restore the health and safety of delegates. 2. An inquiry into the nature of the welfare policy breach is conducted by the leadership team. 3. Sanctions are considered. There exists a three-tier classification of sanctions. The system is designed such that the higher tiers are subject to review by UN Youth prior to being enacted. It is unlikely for an issue serious enough to warrant tier two or three sanctions would occur. Vaccinations UN Youth Australia takes medical concerns very seriously. For that reason, it is part of our policy that you are unable to attend the Pacific Project unless you have receive the following vaccinations prior to the tour: - Hepatitis A - Hepatitis B - Typhoid In addition to routine vaccinations for: - Tetanus and Diphtheria - Whooping Cough - Polio - Measles - Mumps and Rubella - Chicken Pox - Influenza If you are unable to get any of the following vaccinations we can accommodate your needs with proper medical certification.
How to Apply You must be in Years 10, 11 or 12 during 2018 to be eligible to apply for Pacific Project ou can access the application form for Pacific Project 2018 on our website: unyouth.org.au/event/pacific-project/ The application process consists of three stages: your initial online application, a second round written application and a third round interview. We look forward to reading your application!
