1 GLOUCESTERSHIRE ALTERNATIVE PROVISION SCHOOL STAFF INDUCTION POLICY Date Approved: February 2017 Date of Review: February 2018 MONITORING, REVIEW & EVALUATION Standards Committee February 2017 for Review February 2018 Page 1
2 1. Rationale This policy applies to all Gloucestershire AP Schools employees and also, as appropriate, to temporary and agency staff, volunteers and members of the Management Committee who will all receive a tailored induction programme. The programme will include appropriate information, training, observation and mentoring. Safeguarding Children and Child Protection will feature prominently in every induction programme. At GAPS we believe that the first weeks and months are vital to the success of any appointment. We want all our staff to feel that they are full members of our team and that they are able to fully contribute to the life of the school. We want them to share the school s ethos, aims and values and experience a sense of belonging to our school community. A high level of well-being and job satisfaction among the staff will help them to be effective in their respective roles. A thorough induction programme is a crucial part of their entitlement which will help to secure these outcomes. The Induction Programme is designed to help new employees, volunteers and management committee members become familiar with the requirements of their position and learn about the schools culture, ethos and working practices effectively and efficiently so that they become knowledgeable and confident as quickly as possible. This policy sets out our intention and how we ensure this is carried out. 2. Aims Through our staff induction process we aim to: Contribute to improving and developing the overall effectiveness of the Schools Clarify the expectations of the post and of the school Facilitate the development and learning of all newly appointed staff Enable staff to understand and promote the school s aims, objectives and ethos Enable newly appointed staff to identify their potential for personal and career development and take advantage of opportunities for CPD Ensure that all staff are valued and recognised as the school s most important asset February 2017 for Review February 2018 Page 2
3 3. Procedures The procedures outlined below aim to make the induction process a positive and supportive experience for all staff at GAPS. 3.1 All Staff All new staff will be given immediate advice and support by their Line Manager. On their first day, or as soon as is reasonably possible they will be given induction training by the School Business Manager/Office Manager. All of these areas are covered by the template as shown in Appendix A and a signed copy is retained in the individual s personnel file. All new support staff are subject to a probationary period during their first 6 months of employment. The induction programme is designed to provide employees with the skills and knowledge to undertake their role effectively. Occasionally, an employee, for whatever reason, is unable to fulfil the requirements of the role and if this is the case reference should be made to HR to address the shortfall. 3.2 Procedures for Teaching Staff The Centre Lead is responsible for the induction of all teaching staff.
