2 What is the YLP? The Global Young Leaders Programme (YLP) is an executive learning course aimed at developing leadership and business skills through their application in an experiential context. The YLP also fulfils a social mission whereby participants design commercially viable solutions for socially responsible projects across Asia. It is both highly personal and at the vanguard of creating new models for business in response to a rapidly changing global environment. The YLP is the place to be for all young professionals and executives who are keen to brush up on their leadership skills and business acumen in emerging countries, where the real impacts of globalisation are being felt. 3 Experiential and Output-Driven Module Two is one week in-country at the project site. Previous YLPs have taken place across Asia in countries including China, India, Indonesia, and Vietnam The group works closely with a carefully selected local partner on new business concepts and models that seek to create sustainable and prosperous communities Experienced GIFT mentors provide onsite facilitation, guidance and support to participants as they adapt to unfamiliar environments GIFT arranges field trips, focus groups and meetings with project stakeholders including leaders from government, business and civil society Module Two offers unique insights into the socio-economic landscape, customers of the future and business opportunities within the region s dynamic emerging markets. 4 Irrigation Solutions to Support Indian Agriculture About the Project The 31st YLP field project will take place in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh State and will focus on strengthening an organisation that seeks to create prosperity through the marketing and distribution of low cost, appropriate irrigation technology solutions to farming communities throughout India. Participants will propose a recommendations that allow the partner, International Development Enterprises India (IDEI) to attract capital and leverage their existing resources and distribution networks for greater sales growth. The output will include recommendations to provide greater efficiencies throughout the organisation, suggestions for strategic partnerships, and a quantified expectation of social benefit. During the field project participants will: Gain unique insights into business models relevant for emerging markets in Asia, S. America and Africa; Meet with farmers, government, business owners, and investors to gain diverse perspectives on near and medium-term prospects for India; Understand how to consider societal contributions when assessing future business opportunities in the world s fastest growing economies; Use the intensive business planning process to refine their own style of leadership, in particular the soft skills necessary to effectively collaborate across cultures and in unfamiliar subjects Background The agricultural sector has been a major contributor to India s strong GDP growth rates in recent years. Yet as percentage of GDP agriculture has declined from over 50% in the 1950s to 16% in 2011, a disappointing figure given that the sector still employs about 60% of the total workforce. In spite of the visible development of the manufacturing, banking and service sectors, the country s future success still depends on a population of vibrant rural agricultural producers. According to the World Bank a weak framework for sustainable water management and irrigation is key in the massive slowdown of the agricultural sector. Smallholder farmers in India often cultivate a plot of land less than a hectare in size and remain trapped in an ongoing cycle of hunger and poverty. Micro irrigation is a segment which has a significant impact on India as the country faces the problem of water shortage and the problem will only become acute with time. To date they have managed the supply and distribution of water application technologies to over 1.2 million farmer households and plan to reach 30 million people by Human, solar and wind-powered technologies for water-lifting are low cost, require minimal maintenance and improve cultivation of crops for smallholder farmers. IDEI estimates that the use of such products in India have thus far saved 5.2 Billion m3 of water, over 600 Million litres of diesel fuel and avoided 2 Million tonnes of CO2 emissions. Find more at

5 Programme Information Enrollment: Spaces on the YLP are limited - we recommend enrolling early to secure a place. Location: Module One will take place in Hong Kong, and Module Two in Delhi and Lucknow in India Duration: The YLP is a total of two weeks long. Module One is from 3 7 June 2013 Module Two is from 8 14 June 2013 Participants should arrive in Hong Kong no later than 2 June 2013 and can expect to be back in their country of origin no later than 15 June 2013 Fee: US$14,000 per participant The YLP fee includes programme facilitation, course materials, all accommodation, travel to/from the field visit and most meals. Travel to/from Hong Kong from country of origin is not included. Language: The YLP is conducted in English. A strong functional command of English is required but fluency is not a prerequisite.
