1 rules process Disclaimer This is a non-binding, unofficial translation of the original German version Reglement Allgemeine Hausordnung". It was prepared with all due care but the Zurich University of Applied Sciences takes no responsibility for any remaining omissions and/or mistakes. The legally binding document is the original German version, which shall prevail in any case of doubt or differences of interpretation. Please note that English is not an official language of the Swiss Confederation or the Canton of Zurich. This document is provided for information purposes only and has no legal force. Original German version dated General House Rules Legal basis Canton of Zurich Fachhochschulgesetz (law governing the universities of applied sciences) from Legal provisions from the Canton of Zurich and municipalities (police, fire department, etc.) 1 General affairs 1.1 Rationale The purpose of the general house rules is to ensure safe and efficient operations in all buildings and sites used by the ZHAW, as well as to maintain the value and safety of these premises. 1.2 Validity and additional documents These regulations are valid in all sites and buildings used by the ZHAW, notwithstanding if this property belongs to the Canton of Zurich or is rented from a third party. Further regulations specific to certain locations and/or buildings may be applied by the Schools. These additions to the general house rules must be approved by the managing director. 2 General house rules 2.1 Buildings, equipment and facilities Infrastructure and facilities must be used carefully. Costs for damage to infrastructure and facilities, as well as any related costs incurred by the ZHAW, will be passed on in full to those responsible. It is forbidden to interfere with buildings, equipment and property of the ZHAW or to tamper with technical installations without authorisation. Damage or defects related to buildings, equipment or facilities, as well as missing equipment must be reported immediately to the ZHAW Service Desk ( servicedesk@zhaw.ch or extension 66 77). 2.2 Opening hours The opening times of each building are published on the intranet. The ZHAW buildings are closed on Sundays and all public holidays. 1. Approval date: by: RektorIn 1. Effective from: Seite 1 von 5
2 rules process Outside the teaching semester and during semester holidays, special opening hours apply. These are published on the intranet. 2.3 Reservation of rooms and equipment Internal room reservations, e.g. for classrooms outside the fixed teaching schedule, must be made at least five (5) days in advance whenever possible. Requests for room reservations may only be made online via EVENTO WEB by ZHAW employees. The respective reservations office decides on the acceptance or rejection of requests. Reservations for external events (rentals) can be made with the respective reservations office in accordance with the procedure set out on the internet/intranet. These reservations are valid as soon as the lease agreement is signed. Special equipment (e.g. portable projectors) must be reserved at least two (2) working days in advance at the Service Desk ( or extension 66 77) and obtained from housekeeping. Any instructions relating to the equipment as well as the date and method of its return are by arrangement. There are special processes in place for the reservation of rooms for use within the fixed teaching schedule. 2.4 Cleanliness and tidiness Used rooms must be left in an orderly condition. Doors and windows must be closed and electrical equipment, lights, etc. must be turned off. Chairs and tables in classrooms and meeting rooms must be left in the position indicated. Chalk- and whiteboards must be wiped, pin boards and flipcharts must be cleared and left in their original position. Meeting rooms must be locked after use. If an appliance must be left switched on, this must be clearly indicated with a written sign. If no such sign is present, the security staffs have the right to switch the appliance off. Communal areas both inside and outside buildings must be kept clean and in an orderly state. The organiser of an event is charged with ensuring that the reserved location is left in an orderly state. Rubbish must be disposed of appropriately and cleaning is to be organised with housekeeping. In all cases, defects and damage, as well as missing equipment must be reported to the Service Desk ( servicedesk@zhaw.ch or extension 66 77). 2.5 Personal effects and furnishings Personal furnishings such as chairs, tables and pictures are not allowed in teaching and communal areas and will be removed by housekeeping following a warning. The use of private electrical appliances (in particular, coffee machines, fridges and micro-waves) is not allowed; however, smaller appliances such as laptops are permitted. Students personal effects may be stored securely in the lockers provided. During the semester holidays or upon request by housekeeping, the lockers must be completely emptied. The ZHAW accepts no liability for the lockers. Loss of keys will incur a charge. It is not allowed to operate appliances in the lockers. 1. Approval date: by: RektorIn 1. Effective from: Seite 2 von 5
3 rules process Notice boards / posters / petitions / surveys Posters and classified advertisements etc. may be placed only on the notice boards and walls designed for this purpose. After one (1) month, they will be removed. Inappropriate posters, pictures etc. will be removed immediately. Surveys and the collection of donations or signatures may only be carried out with the approval of the managing director. Surveys related to projects, theses and other work directly related to studies may be approved by the deans of the Schools. 2.7 Parking places and storage areas The use of parking spaces on the ZHAW campus is subject to a charge and is regulated by the parking rules. Bicycles and motorbikes may only be stored in the indicated areas and designed for this purpose. The ZHAW accepts no liability for damage or theft. 2.8 Food and drink The consumption of food is allowed only in the canteens, cafeterias or specially designated areas. Tableware may not be removed from the canteens or cafeterias. Food and drink may not be consumed in classrooms or libraries. Only drinks in resealable containers and bottles are allowed in these areas. 2.9 Alcohol, smoking and drugs The sale and consumption of drugs is forbidden on the ZHAW campus. Alcoholic drinks may not be sold or consumed on the ZHAW campus. Exceptions are made for events which have been approved by the deans of the Schools, managing director or the president, as well as for small parties in offices and catering areas by arrangement with the caterer and the ZHAW site manager. Smoking is forbidden in all ZHAW buildings Animals Animals may not be brought into the buildings. Exceptions are made for guide dogs, animals required for teaching, research and development, and service purposes Lost and stolen items Thefts must be reported to the Service Desk ( servicedesk@zhaw.ch or extension 66 77). Loss or theft of Campus Cards or ZHAW keys is to be reported immediately to the issuing authority. A charge will be incurred for replacements. Found items can be handed in at or collected from the respective administration office or reception. To avoid theft, valuable personal belongings should be kept secure at all times. The ZHAW accepts no liability for theft of or damage to personal items. 1. Approval date: by: RektorIn 1. Effective from: Seite 3 von 5
4 rules process Security Security-related incidents must be reported immediately via the emergency number (24h). Weapons, replica weapons and weapon-like items are forbidden in all ZHAW buildings and sites. Emergency information is published on posters in the buildings, in pocket guides and on the internet/intranet. When the leave building (continuous tone) alarm sounds, the ZHAW buildings must be evacuated in a calm and orderly fashion. All those affected must go straight to the respective collection point. Further procedures to be followed at the collection points are determined and communicated by the School management. When the stay in room (recurring tone) alarm sounds, all those affected must find the closest available room or stay in the room they are already occupying and lock and bar the doors. They must remain in the room and wait for further instructions from the emergency services (police, fire department). In buildings without a public address system or a gong, the alarm will be raised verbally. Instructions given by the police, fire and ambulance services must be obeyed Fire safety Fire safety regulations must be strictly followed. Escape routes must be kept clear at all times, i.e. corridors and stairwells must be clear and emergency exits must be accessible and left unlocked at all times. Lighting a fire or using flammable materials is permitted only for educational purposes and under consideration of appropriate protective measures and safety precautions. Defects in fire detectors or extinguishers must be reported immediately to the Service Desk ( servicedesk@zhaw.ch or extension 66 77). Any activities or goods that increase the risk of fire or present a fire hazard must be agreed upon with housekeeping in advance. 1. Approval date: by: RektorIn 1. Effective from: Seite 4 von 5
