Flexible and Precise Tip Positioning The Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) of the STAR moves each pipetting channel independently in the Y-axis, as well in the Z. Each channel uses its own high-precision motors and electronics to reach any position on the deck. In applications such as hit-picking, where samples need to be transferred in an irregular pattern, this flexibility improves throughput. Because up to 16 channels are possible on the same arm, two microplates may be processed simultaneously, doubling throughput. 2 3

5 MICROLAB STAR HAMILTON Proprietary Technology Monitored Air Displacement: MAD By monitoring the air-based pipetting action, pipetting errors are detected during the aspiration step in real time. Errors can then be corrected by software-guided error-handling set up by the user. Monitored Air Displacement eliminates uncertainty in automated assays by providing reliable, consistent, walk away automation. Total Aspirate and Dispense Monitoring: TADM During crucial sample transfers, such as in an In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) laboratory, parameters may be set up by the user to monitor, in real time, both the aspiration and dispensing steps. TADM verifies with a traceable digital audit trail that a sample has been transferred. Dual Liquid Level Sensing: Unrivaled Sensitivity The STAR s independent channels offer two modes of liquid level detection (LLD), including capacitive and Hamilton s unique pressure-based system. The capacitive LLD system detects most liquids in most labware containers. The pressure-based LLD system detects all liquids including non-conductive organic solvents independent of the container type. The STAR s 96 CO-RE head allows capacitive liquid level sensing in reagent troughs eliminating the need to program specific pipetting heights. Compressed O-Ring Expansion: CO-RE Many of today s applications require precision in tip attachment and positioning. In order to effect this precision, Hamilton uses quality engineered components and the CO-RE tip attachment technology. The CO-RE system attaches disposable tips or steel washable tips to the pipetting channels with a stable lock-and-key fit. This enables a precision of ±0.1 mm in all axes. The STAR is therefore ideal for tasks where the highest precision is required: MALDI target spotting 1536 well pipetting Low volume dispensing The system requires no vertical force for tip attachment or tip ejection, thus eliminating mechanical stress and improving the overall system reliability along with pipetting speed and dexterity. Use of disposable tips and washable tips within the same run Ability to pick up a gripper and other tools Eliminates aerosol production upon tip ejection Air Displacement Pipetting The STAR does not use a system fluid. It uses air-displacement technology, which is analogous to a hand held electronic pipet. The benefits of this technology include: In combination with disposable tips, the risk of contamination of critical assays is reduced to an absolute minimum. High accuracy and precision from sub-microliter volumes to 1 ml can be reached with the same pipetting channels. No system fluid, diluters, valves or complicated tubing is required. No dilution effects of samples with system fluid. 4

Plates may also be stacked up to 9 high, increasing capacity dramatically. Pipetting Heads Hamilton s 96 CO-RE head and the independent channels may be combined in a variety of configurations to address different applications. The 96 CO-RE head may pick up either rows or columns in order to transfer or serial dilute samples while having the ability to transfer an entire 96 well plate in one step. The independent channels are used for accessing tubes or individual wells in addition to setting up entire plates for assays. Head Volume Range Tip Sizes 96 CO-RE Head 0.5ul-300ul 10ul, 300ul Channels 0.5ul-1000ul 10ul, 300ul & 1000ul Disposable and Washable Tips The STAR can switch between disposable and washable tips during a run using its CO-RE tip attachment technology. The advanced technologies of the STAR are available with either tip type. Tips may be dedicated to certain reagents and used multiple times within a run since the tip shape is retained during the attachment and ejection processes. Washable tips are available in 300 ul, 1000 ul and custom sizes to fit your application. Tip Washing Stations The 96 CO-RE wash station pumps clean reagents through a trough where the head can aspirate and dispense wash fluid to clean the tips. The wash station for the independent channels allows the drop-off of washable steel needles to a washing chamber and then immediate pick-up of another set of clean needles from the adjoining chamber. This is a unique Hamilton technology whereby tips are washed independently of pipetting, increasing throughput many-fold. This wash station uses up to two reagents and then each tip is air-dried. This standard wash station has three chambers of eight so that by the time the third set is used, the first set is clean, eliminating tip washing time from a method. 6

Vector offers multiple editor windows to fine-tune everything from plate movements, liquid handling parameters, or even the order of microplate processing. 11 Powerful Software for a Powerful Workstation Intuitive Method Creation MICROLAB Vector s intuitive editors give you control over every aspect of your method. Vector comes with standard definitions for simple method creation, but you can create custom definitions for ultimate flexibility. Flexible methods can be created to handle daily changes in workloads and protocols by using software tools such as variables, loops and what-if clauses. Easy SmartSteps Wizards The MICROLAB STAR s SmartSteps simplify method creation to just a few clicks. Select your liquid classes, location of tips and a few other parameters for the entire method. Precision Liquid Handling The STAR has exceptional control of the pipetting process allowing it to successfully aspirate and dispense liquids from ether to 50% PEG. The STAR has several standard liquid classes, but custom classes can be defined to optimize your application. Simple Integration MICROLAB Vector makes integration of multiple devices simple. Just select the devices to be integrated and the tool set for each device appears in the same method editing environment. All peripheral devices are seamlessly integrated though Vector software. Data Management Tools Vector supplies all the tools you need for either importing or exporting data, including complicated worklist capabilities or integration with commercial or custom LIMS systems. 21 CFR Part 11 Regulatory Tools MICROLAB Vector contains the software tools for compliant use of the MICROLAB STAR. The Vector tools provide full audit trails, secure software functionality based on user access and file fidelity with the checksum system. 12 Flexible Automation Accessories You can create a custom workstation by selecting from the multiple standard accessories and labware carriers for the STAR. The STAR accessories include shakers, temperature control for plates and reagents, plate gripping tools and much more. In addition, the STAR accessories offer the same consistency and reliability as the STAR itself with built-in monitoring and feedback control for excellent performance. Tools for the Regulated Environment The STAR s accessories provide tools, documentation and error handling necessary for regulated laboratories, such as clinical and GMP labs. Many of the automation accessories offer selfmonitoring capabilities to ensure and more importantly document that the STAR has completed all aspects of the run successfully. 13 CO-RE Gripper Gripper Barcode Reader MICROLAB STAR Accessories Microplate Gripping: CO-RE Grip Thanks to the CO-RE tip attachment technology, the STAR features an innovated plate transfer option. In addition to tips, the pipetting channels can pick up the compact CO-RE gripping tool during a run. With this gripping tool the pipetting channels act as a gripper, picking plates from a stack, moving plates around the deck, removing lids or placing a filter plate vacuum manifold. The CO-RE gripper is an inexpensive option than moves labware without time consuming positional teaching. Microplate Gripping: iswap The iswap is a gripper tool that can access items on or off the deck. This robotic gripper is highly flexible with its vertical and rotary capabilities. The iswap may be used to automate these microplate applications: Storage Incubation Reading Washing As with the CO-RE grippers above, there are no positional vectors to teach. The software automatically gets positions from the rack definition. Barcode Scanning: Autoload Option Many laboratories require barcode reading for positive sample identification and sample tracking. The Autoload option reads barcodes from sample tubes, microplates and carriers.it verifies correct labware and positions for greater method security. The software automatically tracks a sample throughout a method. The Autoload option allows an uninterrupted run by moving carriers outside the deck so that the operator can replenish samples. When the time comes, the software automatically pulls in the new samples and continues to process them. Temperature Control: TCC The Temperature-Controlled Carrier provides consistent, monitored temperature regulation for standard and PCR microplates. Two peltier devices adjust the carrier temperature to a maximum of 60 C and a minimum of 22 C below ambient temperature. The four positions of the TCC may be chilled or heated in order to satisfy the needs of the application and throughput. Shaking: Microplate Shaker The microplate shaker carrier holds up to four magnetic shaker modules, which are independently controlled and can be run in parallel with the other functions on the STAR. Programmable parameters include shaking speed, motion and duration. Room temperature and heated shakers are available. Tip Washing Stations: Independent Tip Washing & 96 CO-RE Head Washing The independent tip washing station is an ingenious device that eliminates washing time from an application. The dual chamber wash station and the 96 CO-RE head wash station are also available. Microplate Stacking: iswap Stacking Carrier & CO-RE Stacking Carrier In a single carrier or row of 5 microplates, up to 40 microplates may be stacked. The software is fully integrated for dealing with stacks and the STAR can even pipet into different layers of exposed microplates. Gravimetric Performance Testing: Volume Verification Kit The volume verification kit is a completely automated gravimetric test, which verifies pipetting precision and trueness for each of the independent tips. The kit is walk-away and is done by Hamilton Service staff during every installation and any service call than involves a pipetting channel. Vacuum Filter Systems: AVS & BVS The Automated Vacuum System and Basic Vacuum System are complete and fully software-integrated vacuum systems with pressure control. They allow automation of vacuum based kits for SPE, LC-MS, genomics, and proteomics. 12
