6 ELECTRICAL ASSEMBLY 6.1 WIRE ROUTING Route the wires from each load cell to the junction box. The junction box can be mounted almost anywhere but is usually mounted close to the center of the deck. Scales with manholes mount the junction box between the wire routing angles at the center of the deck. Scales with a manhole are usually installed in a fully enclosed pit with no access except through the scale. Scales without manholes mount the junction box 6 in from one side of the deck at the center between the wire routing angles. Scales without manholes must be an open pit design or have access from another location. Route the cable from the load cells to the junction box as follows; 1. Route the cable from the Load Cell through the routing angle located beside the pocket. DO NOT pull the wires tight. Leave only enough cable to allow the load cell to freely move. 2. Route the Load Cell Cables to the junction box through the routing angles wherever it will be located. Routing Angle Junction Box 8

6.2 JUNCTION BOX CONNECTIONS 1. Plan the location and orientation of the Junction Box. Note the direction you will run the scale cable to the indicator. 2. Drill 13/16 holes into the junction box to mount the Strain Relief connectors. You must drill 4 Holes for the Load Cell Cables and 1 for the Scale Cable. 3. Mount the Strain Relief connectors into the Junction box. 4. Mount the junction box to the bottom of the deck using the supplied self drill screws. 5. Route the Load Cell Cables into the Junction box. You can trim the load cell cables shorter but they must never be less than 5 feet long. Otherwise neatly cable tie the wires into a loop at the junction box. 6. Connect the Load Cell cables as shown. 13 Load Cell Connections 7. Load Cell Numbering should be as follows. For the load cells connected to the junction box Load Cell #1 is closest to the indicator then continues in a clock wise pattern as viewed from the top. This is not required but will make balance, calibration and service much easier. Note: Some Load Cells may use a different color scheme. Please not the documentation with the Load cells if this is the case. 6.3 SCALE (INDICATOR) CABLE CONNECTION Route the scale cable from the Indicator location to the Junction box. The scale cable can also be run through the routing angles. Install the cable through the strain relief connector and connect to the trim boards as shown. Scale Cable Trim Board Connection The scale is assembly is now complete and can be shipped or installed. 10

7 LIFTING (RIGGING) INSTRUCTIONS The Truck or Axle scale can be lifted by either means shown below. Refer to the specifications to determine the load to be lifted. Use only rated rigging equipment rated for the load and angle of lift. 7.1 LIFTING METHOD #1 Method #1 is used more often for shorter scales but can be used with a longer scale with the proper slings and/or harnesses. Each Load Cell Pocket has a center rib with a 1-1/4 Hole located near the top. A clevis can be installed and attach to a sling. Cover Plate Rigging Mount 11

7.2 LIFTING METHOD #2 Method #2 is used more often for longer scales but can be used with a shorter scale with the proper slings and/or harnesses. Lifting a longer scale can be done as per Method #1 if you have long enough slings and your lifting device has the proper amount of lift. Method #2 can be used for open and fully enclosed pits if the strap used will fit between the side wall and the scale. Method #2 is slung around the entire scale deck. Ensure the straps a placed outside of a support to prevent them from slipping towards the center. 16 8 PERMANENT FOUNDATION INSTALLATION 8.1 FOUNDATION AND SITE PREPARATION A concrete foundation (pit) drawing is usually included with the quotation. Contact a NORAC Customer Service representative for foundation drawings. The concrete foundation drawing is intended for reference only. NORAC takes no responsibility for local ground conditions that may affect the design. Consult a local professional for ground conditions and foundation recommendations. Always check the installation area for buried cables, sewer lines, etc. Contact local utilities to identify buried transmission lines of any kind before digging. Canadian Weights and Measures Regulations state that 1. Access to the underside of the scale deck is provided. Access is also required for service. A totally enclosed foundation requires access either through the deck or through the foundation. 2. The location of the scale allows for direct access of test trucks for inspection. If easy access is not available, equipment and operators must be available to place weights on the scale. 3. The area surrounding the scale allows for adequate drainage away from the scale. 4. The scale indicator to be installed so that the operator and any interested party can see the weight indication and the entire scale deck at the same time Equipment and Tools The following is a list of tools and materials required when installing a permanent NORAC NORSTEEL truck scale. Materials & Tools: - 6 inch Level - Hammer Drill - 3/4 Concrete Drill Bit - Crane, Forklift or Front End Loader - Grout mixing pale & tools - Hydraulic jack & blocks - Lifting Harness - Measuring Tape - Transit - 3/4x10 Concrete anchor bolts 1 - Non Shrink grout 13

8.1.2 Transit For proper operation, scales must be level. To ensure the NORAC NORSTEEL TM truck scale is installed level, a transit must be used. When setting up the transit, place it in a location where it should not have to be moved when equipment or scale parts are brought in or out of the site 1. Confirm the elevation of each pile and the approach ramps. Also note the elevation of the ground below the top of the piles. Ramp Pile 1 Pile 2 Pile 3 Pile 4 Pile 5 Pile 6 Pile 7 Pile 8 Ramp The ramps must be elevated 10-1/4 +/-1/8 from the top of the piles and the piles must all be within 1/8 from each other. If any of the piles exceed 1/8 correct the pile and consult the foundation drawing for the best possible solution. Measure the location of the piles and end walls and compare to the foundation drawing. 14

8.2 PERMANENT INSTALLATION Placement and Leveling 1. Sling the scale as per lifting instructions Place the scale into the foundation on top of the piles. 3. Center and square the scale in the foundation. There should be a minimum clearance of 1 on all sides of the scale. 4. Remove the Rigging. 5. Loosen the retaining nuts on the leveling screws of each pocket. 6. Using a level adjust the level screws the smallest amount to bring ALL the pads level in both directions. 7. Adjust the height of each corner until the scale deck is flush or slightly below the top of the approach ramps AND each pad is at the same elevation. The transit is required to ensure each pad is at the correct elevation. 8. Check the elevation of each corner and the approach ramp alignment. The scale must remain level. 9. Tighten the leveling screw lock nut Grouting 1. Jack only one end of the scale at a time. 2. Note the distance between the bottom of the Installation Pad and the top of the pile. 3. Raise one end of the scale 1-2 to allow the installation of the drypak grout. 4. Mix the grout as per manufacturer to a drypak consistency. Place the grout under the pads slightly thicker then the dimension noted in step Lower the scale onto the grout. Check to ensure the grout has squeezed out and not left any voids. If so redo with more grout. 6. Drill in the anchors through the two large 1-1/4 holes in the Pads. Use ¾ x10 drive in anchors installed minimum 6 deep. Snug the anchors against the pad. Do not tighten anchors until grout is set. 7. Remove the shipping bracket ONLY from the grouted pockets. 8. Repeat for opposite end of the deck. 9. Once all pockets have been grouted the remaining shipping hardware can be removed. (Shipping clips, Checking pin spacer). Reinstall the checking pin.

8.3 FINAL INSTALLATION Multiple Deck Scales If multiple decks are used the junction box of each deck must be connected. Simply connect each junction box in parallel as per 6.3 and route a cable from one Junction Box to the indicator. Connect the scale cable to the indicator as per the Indicator manufacturer s instructions. Multiple decks must also be connected mechanically. A link kit is supplied to join the scale decks together. Install the links on both sides of the scales as shown below. Tighten Nuts ¼ Gap both sides Lock Jam nuts Final Assembly When the grout has fully cured, tighten the mounting bolts to 90 ft-lbs and install the cover plates. Your scale is now ready to be calibrated Calibration Your scale is now installed and requires the electronics to be calibrated. You must balance the output from each load cell, calibrate the indicator, and have the scale test and inspected by an Authorized Service Provider to obtain a Legal for Trade scale. Balance a calibration is covered later in the manual. 16

9 PORTABLE SCALE INSTALLATIONS 9.1 FOUNDATION AND SITE PREPARATION The NORAC NORSTEEL Portable Truck scale does not require a concrete foundation. All that is required is a firm, well compacted, level base of suitable material, preferably 8 of compacted gravel and 4 x12 timbers if the Portable Base Frame does not include built in steel timbers. Ramps up to the scale can be constructed of packed material. 4. The scale indicator to be installed so that the operator and any interested party can see the weight indication and the entire scale deck at the same time. 5. A temporary (portable) installation that is subject to distortion or motion due to frost action is not to be used during periods of the spring and fall when the foundation would not provide a stable support Equipment and Tools The following is a list of tools and materials required when installing a NORAC NORSTEEL Portable Truck scale. Tools & Materials: - Crane, forklift, or front end loader - Lifting harness - Transit - Level - Socket set, wrenches, and hand tools (only required for a multiple deck scale) - 4 x 12 timbers and shims (2 per Load cell location) OR - 24 x 24 Shim material, Steel or Exterior Grade Wood 17

9.1.2 Transit For proper installation, scales must be level. To ensure the NORAC NORSTEEL Portable Truck scale is level, a transit must be used. When setting up the transit, place it in a location where it should not have to be moved when equipment or scale parts are brought into or out of the site. 9.2 INSTALLATION PORTABLE BASE FRAME WITHOUT BUILT IN TIMBERS Prior to installing the scale, timbers of at least 4 x 12 and as wide as the scale should be placed across the full width of the scale under the load cell pocket locations. Leveling at this point is important. The timbers should be leveled across the width and along the length of the scale. Use a level to approximately level the timbers; the transit will be used in the final leveling of the scale. 18

Making sure there are no obstructions between the portable base frame, the scale, or any other object such as the ground or timbers, position the scale on the timbers making certain the base frame cross members are centered along the timbers. If your scale has more than one section, bring the other sections into place, and bolt the portable base frames together. The scale should remain level when hoisting with a crane or a front-end loader. Final leveling of the scale must be done with metal shims of at least 18 x 18. A transit is required for this operation. Measure the elevation of the scale at each end of each load cell pocket location and shim accordingly. At this point the scale should be loaded by driving a fully loaded truck over the scale at least five times. This will allow any settling to occur. Continue with the final installation and leveling. 9.3 INSTALLATION PORTABLE BASE FRAME WITH BUILT IN TIMBERS Prior to installing prepare the scale location. Level and compact the ground paying special attention to the load cell locations. Use the transit to bring each location to as close to level as possible. Leveling at this point is important Making sure there are no obstructions between the portable base frame, the scale, or any other object such as the ground, position the scale on the prepared surface. If your scale has more than one section, bring the other sections into place, and bolt the portable base frames together. The scale should remain level when hoisting with a crane or a front-end loader. Final leveling of the scale must be done with shims of at least 24 x 24. A transit is required for this operation. Measure the elevation of the scale at each end of each load cell pocket location and shim accordingly. At this point the scale should be loaded by driving a fully loaded truck over the scale at least five times. This will allow any settling to occur. Repeat the final leveling of the scale. 9.4 FINAL INSTALLATION When you have your scale leveled you must check each pocket location to make certain the pads and portable base frame are contacting the ground. Drive an empty truck over the scale and watch the scale and the portable base frame at each pad location. If the scale moves a large amount a pad may not be contacting the ground firmly, you must shim that particular pad so as to remove any play in that location. When you have checked each pad location, recheck the scale for level. The material used as backfill for the approach ramps should not be permitted to get under the scale, as it may interfere with the operation of the scale. 9.5 INDICATOR CONNECTION When the scale has been installed and leveled the indicator can then simply be plugged into the scale. If you scale has more than one scale section the indicator wire will have multiple ends, or a Y-cable will be supplied. Plug each end of the indicator cable or Y-cable into the scale sections. 19

10 SCALE CONSIDERATIONS 10.1 SENSE LINES If the scale deck is located a large distance from the indicator (over 100 feet), sense lines may be required to compensate for voltage drops over the excitation and signal lines. Sense lines are connected to the positive and negative excitation lines at the junction boxes, and the positive and negative sense terminals of the indicator. The indicator then compensates for voltage drops. Contact a NORAC sales representative for more details OPTIONAL LIGHTNING PROTECTION If lightning protection is required for your scale, call a NORAC sales representative for more details. 11 CALIBRATION 11.1 PORTABLE TRUCK SCALES Most Portable Truck Scales are balanced and calibrated and certified at the factory depending on the purchaser s preference. To confirm if you scale has been approved Legal for Trade simply check the serial plate on indicator and the scale for a Measurement Canada Certification sticker or stamp. If you scale has not been certified and you would like have the scale legal for trade please contact NORAC. If your scale required balancing and calibration please follow the instructions below for permanent truck scales PERMANENT TRUCK SCALES Before the scale can be calibrated, all load cells must be balanced and responding to loading equally by adjusting the balance trimmers. The balance trimmers are located in the junction box on each deck section. They are initially set to 5-Ohm resistance. The following steps should be performed by a scale technician. 1. A concentrated load is placed of each load cell location and the output is recorded. 2. Adjust the trim to each load cell by increasing low output values and decreasing high output values until each load cell location outputs the same load. Be aware of a zero shift when performing a scale balance. 3. The indicator can then be calibrated using a known load following the instructions from the indicator manufacturer. A complete Legal for Trade Certification requires more than can be reasonably explained in this manual. A certification will include but not limited to; Load Discrimination Tests, Strain Test, Eccentricity or Shift Test and indicator function tests. 20

12 MAINTENANCE The best way to keep your scale operating correctly is to perform regular maintenance. Every scale should be checked with a level or transit periodically to ensure the platform is in the level position. Check under and around the scale to see if anything may be touching the scale. If anything has built up around or under the scale such as ice, dirt, mud or manure this must be removed. Also check all cables and connectors and replace any components that appear worn or broken. You should have your scale checked and calibrated once a year by a Certified Scale Technician to ensure proper functioning of your NORAC NORSTEEL Platform Truck Scale. Call NORAC at for your nearest authorized service dealer. 13 TROUBLE SHOOTING If you are having trouble with your Truck Scale, a few simple procedures should help you determine the possible problem. 1. The first action to take is to inspect the scale for any physical damage. Take special note of the cable and any connectors. When inspecting the cable and connectors, wiggle them around while watching the indicator display. If the readout jumps around while moving a cable or connector, this usually means that there is a short, loose or broken connection and repair or replacement is necessary. 2. Check under and around the scale to see if anything may be touching the scale. If anything has built up around or under the scale such as ice, dirt, mud or manure this must be removed. 3. If the scale readout is drifting, this is indicative of moisture being present somewhere in the circuit. Check to see if there is moisture in any of the connectors, load cells, or cables. You can also remove the cover of the junction box to check for condensation. However if your scale has a Weights and Measures seal on the junction box DO NOT open it. In any location where you suspect moisture to be present, dry it off with a hair dryer and check to see if this solves the problem. If you find a place where moisture is collecting and causing a problem, take steps to prevent this by using a waterproof sealant. If you cannot isolate a problem with a NORAC NORSTEEL TM Truck Scale, contact NORAC Service at
