2 Steel products can now be loaded efficiently onto trucks Steelwork Georgsmarienhütte GmbH near Osnabrück has completely restructured its yard logistics by harmonizing and consolidating in-plant logistics processes, involving all relevant modes of transport, with the help of leogistics YARD Suite, a solution based on SAP technology. The yard management solution was implemented in collaboration with GMH Systems GmbH and leogistics GmbH, a subsidiary of Heidelberg-based cbs Corporate Business Solutions.

3 Custom-Made Steel Georgsmarienhütte GmbH, with its production site near Osnabrück, ranks among the leading European suppliers of bar steel, billets, crude steel, and bright steel in quality and engineering grades. Georgsmarienhütte GmbH generates around 80 percent of its business from sales in the automotive industry and with its suppliers. The company also supplies steel for chains, machinery parts, and hydraulic components. The steel is produced exclusively from prepared and sorted steel scrap in an electric arc furnace. Georgsmarienhütte delivers steel that is tailored to customer requirements, consistently and just in time. 350 Trucks per Day in the Yard The goal of Georgsmarienhütte GmbH was to make all yard logistics processes at the production site more efficient, while meeting all shipping requirements. There were also difficulties in managing the shipping processes efficiently. Georgsmarienhütte GmbH delivers its steel products to customers by truck or rail. A high number of trucks are required for the shipping process. Approximately 100 trucks are dispatched every day. A total of 300 to 350 trucks pass through the plant every day, whereby the dispatch times are not distributed evenly throughout the day. For example, traffic typically peaks at lunchtime. Loading points are highly frequented at this time, causing long truck tailbacks. In contrast, trains are loaded mainly at night. Swap trailers are preloaded at night and then staged in a designated area for the trailer swap. Up to now, Georgsmarienhütte GmbH had to widely manage the shipping processes manually, from shipment quantity planning to operational yard processes and departure from the plant site. In addition, although weighing machines and handheld scanners were involved in the overall process, they were not integrated from a technical perspective. YARD Suite Enables Efficient Yard Logistics The aim of the project was to establish advanced SAP-based handling of truck shipping processes in the form of a yard management system. However, in the planning phase it already became clear quickly that examining the processes for all modes of transport made more sense from a business perspective. For this reason, the logistics processes in rail and trailer handling were also taken into account. Due to the fact that this allowed shipping processes to include all relevant modes of transport and created process depth, the company decided to widen the project scope accordingly. The aim was to make yard logistics as a whole more efficient and fit for the future. The steelworks wanted to better coordinate yard movements such as the arrival and departure of steel products as well as inbound deliveries, enable communication between all parties in the supply chain, manage shipping processes at short notice and plan them in the long term, even out the daily truck volume, reduce cycle and latency times, as well as identify optimal times for loading and unloading to avoid waiting periods. To achieve these improvements, freight forwarders and railway companies had to be integrated into the planning process first and the existing dispatch processes had to be harmonized as well as consolidated. Integration of the new yard management system into the company s own ERP system also had to be possible.

5 Modeling of Individual Processes Georgsmarienhütte GmbH decided to use leogistics YARD Suite an SAP-based solution for managing and optimizing plant, on-site, and general logistics processes. This advanced yard management system is helping Georgsmarienhütte to meet process requirements. The process-independent architecture of leogistics YARD Suite enables future logistics process requirements to be realized flexibly in line with the provision: IT follows business processes. This is the only way to model yard processes according to a company s individual process requirements without regulating IT systems. Besides the IT implementation, the focus was primarily on harmonizing and standardizing the logistics processes, which are modeled in leogistics YARD Suite today. Before the leogistics solution could be implemented, existing processes had to be reworked and aligned to accommodate current and future requirements. This included processes such as truck shipping and the related special processes such as ingot shipping, inbound truck delivery, inbound truck trailer delivery, truck trailer swap, truck trailer receipt, rail shipment, delivery traffic for small deliveries, permanent vehicles, weighing by third party (single and double), as well as loading ramps management. The latter was achieved through allocation of time slots to optimize sequence and supply control. This was done taking into account existing infrastructure such as automated barrier systems, external loading scanners, and dispatch terminals, which were connected to the yard management solution. Yards can be easily defined, created for specific customers and displayed graphically. This enables a direct view of occupancy and utilization. An entire plant, including all loading points, can also be visualized. This provides an overview of all loading and unloading operations. The need for tracking and tracing in real time has also been fulfilled, establishing operational transparency in the logistics process. The solution can be used with full integration of diverse SAP systems. With leogistics YARD Suite, Georgsmarienhütte GmbH now has analyzable data to use for reporting, which is obtained from SAP BW thanks to integration with the company s own SAP ERP system. The resulting transparency of yard logistics now provides a much better overview of where readjustments in the processes may be required. The consultants and developers of leogistics were entrusted with implementing the new yard management system, providing support during testing, and putting it into operation. The service scope also included training the IT specialists of GMH Systems GmbH so that they could handle support and development of leogistics yard management themselves in the future. The first phase of the project was successfully completed in April 2015, when the new yard management system was put into operation.
