3 Brief Overview Republic of Vanuatu is composed of about 83 scattered islands in a Y shaped layout New Hebrides, colonized by the British and the French and achieved its independence in 1980, Population of 256,155 (2012). Some of the challenges are: legislations and regulatory activities, improving ships standards uneconomical shipping routes land issues for supporting infrastructures cargo tonnage and passengers transportation data human resources wrecks removal Purchase of old ships Search and Rescue (SAR) (costs) With regards to what has been experienced, some corrective mechanisms were introduced

17 Opportunities and Government Support With regards to what has been experienced, some corrective mechanisms were introduced and Implemented Inter island shipping project infrastructures, maritime & shipping legislations review, establishment of a maritime safety administration, reform of Ports and Marine Department, shipping support scheme (uneconomical routes) Ship wrecks proper procedures and legislations Slipway construction in consideration upgrade of Port Vila international wharf and constructing a new international wharf to accommodate cargo ships only Upgrade ships standards for hull, cargo and passenger insurances SAR Automatic location corresponder (ALC)

19 Conclusion Vanuatu inter island shipping forms the basis of the main transport link to its outer islands in support of the economic development and external trade Challenges have been faced but it does give the opportunity for further and better development of the shipping sector Vanuatu is slowly moving forward in developing its inter island shipping and maritime sector to meet better shipping standards
