Slide 1 Rigging Awareness In the next two days you will here discussions that have and will continue to impact the crane and rigging industry. After this conference if you take one message home, it should be RIGGING & SAFETY belong together. Slide 2 Do You Know your rigging?? Every day some item or piece of equipment is being lifted in a fabrication facility or work site. Rigging equipment is frequently used in extreme conditions and applications, still we continue to treat the apparatus we use as insignificant. Slide 3 SLING STANDARDS On July1, 2009 Alberta adopted the ASME Standard B Slings. On February 1, 2011 British Columbia and Manitoba adopted the ASME Standard B Slings.

Slide 4 Other REFERENCED Standards ASME B30.10 Hooks ASME B30.26 Rigging Hardware WSTDA WB-1 (for web slings) * ASTM-A - (for Wire Rope & Chain) Slide 5 MANDATORY & ADVISORY RULES * Requirements of the Standards listed are characterized by use of the word SHALL * Recommendations of the Standards listed are characterized by the word should. Slide 6 INSPECTION FREQUENCY Rigging inspections are generally listed in the following types; INITIAL FREQUENT PERIODIC Inspections should be also determined on frequency of sling use and service conditions.

Slide 7 INITIAL INSPECTIONS INITIAL Inspection is defined as - prior to use of all new altered, modified or repaired rigging shall be inspected by a designated person to verify the correct rigging is being used and that it is in compliance with the applicable provisions of the legislative code and standards. Written records are not required. Slide 8 FREQUENT INSPECTIONS FREQUENT Inspection is defined as - a visual inspection for damage shall be performed by the user or other designated person each day or shift for conditions that may result as a hazard. Written records are not required. Slide 9 PERIODIC INSPECTIONS PERIODIC Inspection is defined as - a complete inspection for damage to the rigging shall be periodically performed by a designated person. Rigging shall be examined individually for conditions that may result as a hazard and criteria listed in the standards. Periodic inspections SHALL not exceed 1 year

Slide 10 PERIODIC INSPECTIONS A written record of the most recent periodic inspection shall be maintained. A written inspection record will include the identification for each item, a description and condition of the item. Slide 11 Further sling inspections Web Slings that are continually used or exposed to ultra violet light or chemically active environments can be subject to degradation without visible indications and therefore shall be proof tested semi- annually or more depending on the severity of exposure. Recommended in WSTDA-WS-1 Slide 12 Magnetic Particle Inspection The manufacturers who provide quality rigging hardware and components use Magnetic Particle Inspection to inspect for surface, subsurface abnormalities and flaws such as cracks. This non-destructive testing method should be a part of every periodic inspection.

Slide 13 Marking Web Slings Many users mark or write on their web slings to identify the length, ownership etc with felt pens and other marking items. The standards state that finishes and coatings shall be compatible with the other components and not impair the performance of the sling. Slide 14 EFFECTS ON WEBBING We know that certain chemical environments can affect the webbing and threads and as such need to be certain of what and how we are marking web slings. This was confirmed by Sanford North America the manufacturer of the Sharpie Marker that their products contain xylene and are not recommended for use on webbing products. Slide 15 ASSET MANAGEMENT Today there are management systems that can assist in combining your inspections and inventory tracking. The ability to create a serial number for each individual piece of rigging and track that items use, is valuable for any size company or project.

Slide 16 Van Beest In this data sheet Van Beest outlines the areas specified for stamping unique markings such as serial numbers that can be dedicated to a company or project. Slide 17 CROSBY In this data sheet Crosby outlines the areas specified for stamping unique markings such as serial numbers that can be dedicated to a company or project. Slide 18 SLEEVE STAMPING The stamping of a sleeve used in a wire rope sling is beneficial to the user. 1) A unique individual serial number will allow for traceability of the slings use and inspection history. 2) The serial number will also allow the user to contact the supplier with that unique number to replace the sling identification if lost. 3) No proof testing is required for this action keeping your inventory available for use.

Slide 19 TRAINING Training is one of the most important requirements in performing a job or task. As important as training is, we still place it as a secondary need, usually based on convenience and cost. Currently there is no accreditations or requirements to become a trainer for rigging, inspections, overhead crane use. Slide 20 Who is QUALIFIED?? We have individuals who educate our industry that backing off the pin when a screw pin shackle is in use is a recommended practice. The manufacturers of such products have printed and published that this is not an acceptable practice!! Who do you believe?? Slide 21 What are you really getting?? Whether it is inspections or training, it is important to request copies of certificates, credentials and references on anyone you may be looking at to perform a service. If the inspection is for free, how detailed is it? What kind of training makes you a MASTER TRAINER?

Slide 22 OH & S Defines competent in relation to a worker, means adequately qualified, suitably trained and with sufficient experience to safely perform work without supervision or with only a minimal degree of supervision; The employer should be able to justify the basis on which a worker is considered to suitably trained and have sufficient experience. Slide 23 Qualifications & Credentials Our industry requires a standard that certifies the individuals or companies for training purposes. There needs to be qualifications and criteria met in order to insure that the proper Information and message is being delivered. Slide 24 Government & Policy Today it is important to challenge both industry and Government to improve not only the standards that govern us but how we regulate and enforce them. Safety has no place for political rhetoric, it needs commitment and consistency. There needs to be more responsibility and accountability on the manufacturers, suppliers, and users of rigging.

Slide 25 YOUR VOICE In order to address the future of the industry, It is important that all involved seek the same goals of continuity while working together creating constructive change in a positive manner to the industry. Slide 26 Presentation content I wish to thank the following for the use of their documentation or verbiage in my presentation.
