3 Preface Welcome to the Port of Long Beach a state-of-the art, environmentally friendly global seaport. This self-guided tour is intended to complement your classroom s visit to the Aquarium of the Pacific. The tour uses talking points based on the California state content standards to educate students about the Port of Long Beach a key international trade hub providing thousands of career opportunities right in their back yard! Every year about $140 billion worth of cargo passes across the Port of Long Beach s docks. Imported cargo arrives at the Port bound for store shelves, factories and other destinations locally and across the United States; and exports leave, bound for foreign ports and international consumers. The Port of Long Beach is a full-service seaport: Everything from electronics and machinery to food, cars and petroleum products are shipped through the Port. Today you will see diverse terminals that make the Port of Long Beach one of the busiest and most successful seaports in the world. You will see mammoth container ships more than three football fields long. You will see towering gantry cranes that rise as tall as 20-story buildings. And you will learn how the Port of Long Beach plays an important role in your daily lives. We have provided ample talking points, but feel free to use as many or as few as you desire. The narration teaches to second-, third- and fourthgrade history-social science standards. If you want more information about some of the things you have seen, please visit our Web site at www. polb.com. Let s get started! preface v
4 Important Information for Teachers The self-guided tour will take minutes. The Port of Long Beach is a busy place, so please be careful! Stay alert for trucks, intersections and railroad crossings. Please do not stop along the road unless the guidebook indicates there is a safe place to do so. Stay on the designated course. We have identified a safe, well accessible route for buses and large vehicles. Important Information for Teachers vii
5 Har PICO AVE. 1. The Port of Long Beach Harbor Plaza Harbor Department Building START AT PORT OF LONG BEACH ADMINISTRATION BUILDING, 925 HARBOR PLAZA. YOU MAY PULL INTO THE PARKING LOT. THIS IS A SAFE PLACE TO STOP. Student Exercise What are some other goods that might come through the Port of Long Beach? Answers: Just about everything you ll find on the store shelves comes through the Port of Long Beach computers, ipods, video games, clothing, vegetables, steel, oil, salt. The Port of Long Beach is a seaport. A seaport is a harbor with facilities for ships to unload or load cargo. Cargo is anything shipped through the port. Those shoes on your feet, cell phone in your pocket, ipod in your backpack? Most likely they made their way into your life through the Port of Long Beach or a seaport just like it. the Port of Long Beach? 1
6 Dr. PICO AVE. The Port of Long Beach is the second busiest port in the country. When combined with the Port of Los Angeles, it is #1 in the Western Hemisphere and #5 in the world. The Port of Long Beach brings in goods from other countries, called imports. Our top imports are petroleum products (including gasoline for our cars), plastics, furniture, and electronics. 2. International Transportation Service Terminal The Port of Long Beach also sends goods from the United States to other countries, called exports. Our top exports are waste paper, scrap metal (old cars, washing machines, refrigerators and others), food and cotton for clothing. LOOK DIRECTLY ACROSS THE ROAD. Scenic Harbor The Port handles $140 billion in cargo a year. Each year, about 5,300 ships call here from all over the world. Harbor Plaza You can see stacks of containers. Goods typically come into this country in containers. Harbor Department Building Containers carry a virtual mega mall of products: clothing, shoes, stereos, furniture, fabric, food, basketballs, toys you name it. Metal cargo containers were introduced in the maritime industry in 1956 and have become the standard for the way cargo is transported across the globe. More than 7 million container units move through the Port a year. Food is also shipped in refrigerated containers, which carry everything from ice cream and computer parts to cosmetics and medical supplies. 2 the Port of Long Beach? COME TO A STOP AT THE 4-WAY INTERSECTION AT PICO AVENUE. Scenic Harbor LOOK STRAIGHT AHEAD. Harbor Plaza PIER F Harbor Department Building PIER G PIER G The giant gantry cranes you see are very important to containerized shipping. They run on electricity. The crane operator sits in a cab as high off the ground as the top of a 15 story building. The cranes can lift up to 65 tons at a time and reach over ships that are 22 containers wide. They move along the docks on rails. Skilled crane operators can lift 20 to 30 containers an hour. Long Beach Container Terminal 5

Scenic Harbor Plaza PIER F Harbor Department Building The Port of Long Beach like much of Long Beach sits on one of the largest active oil fields in the country. Oil drilling continues throughout Port property. PIER G PIER G Oil Drilling 7

Harbor Plaza PIER F Harbor Department Building California United Terminals imports consumer products in containers and steel. PIER G PIER G Those brown steel structures you see are called rubber-tire gantry cranes. They are used to move containers off stacks and onto trucks. You can also see stacks of truck trailers. Containers go on top of the trailers, and trucks pull them along the road. California United Terminals 9

11 Dr. Pier F Ave. PICO AVE. 7. Container Ships ON YOUR LEFT. You may be able to see one of the large ships that deliver goods to the Port of Long Beach. Scenic Some of these ships are as large as three football fields. Harbor The biggest ships carry 8,000 of the smaller containers (20-foot-long). GERALD DESMOND BRIDGE A single one of the Port s largest cargo container ships could carry enough shoes to supply one pair each to nearly the entire population of California (31 million), or enough DVD players to supply the entire population of Illinois (12 million). Pier T Ave. PIER E Harbor Pl One of the Port s cargo container ships carries enough products to fill an entire regional shopping mall with clothing, shoes, toys and handbags stacked eight feet high and wall to wall. PIER F One container holds 17,000 pairs of Levi s jeans that s almost enough to give every third-grade student in the Long Beach school district two pairs of jeans. Gerald Desmond Bridge 13
12 8. Rail PIER B PIER B EXIT 47 NORTH. TURN PIER RIGHT A AT THE INTERSECTION. STAY IN YOUR RIGHT- HAND LANE. ON YOUR LEFT. Student Exercise Why do you think the Port of Long Beach is one of INNER HARBOR the busiest ports in the country? PIER T As you pass over the Commodore Schuyler F. Heim Bridge, you will notice a railroad track on your left-hand side, and you might even see a train passing along. Answers: Asia is a key trading partner for the United States, and the Port of Long Beach benefits from its close proximity to Asia. Goods come through the Pacific Basin and right into Southern California, where much of the products are consumed by the large population. PIER E PIER F Trains are used mostly for goods going east of the Rocky Mountains, because it is more costeffective than using trucks. Nearly 20% of all imported containers at the Port of Long Beach are transported directly to their non-local destinations by train. Rail 15

Long Beach has a natural harbor, but most of the Port of Long Beach is made from a landfill. Rock is quarried at Catalina Island and brought to the port to create giant walls of rock that outline the port facilities. Then, the walls are filled in with sediment and soil dug from the ocean bottom. Student Exercise Long Beach is one of the biggest cities in California. Do you think the Port had anything to do with Long Beach becoming a major city? Answers: Port-related trade is one of the largest Long Beach employers, with 30,000 jobs. This is one of every eight jobs in Long Beach. The existence of the natural harbor and the man-made port drew people to Long Beach, contributing to the city s growth. ANAHEIM ST. Pier B St. 9TH ST.
