2. Next Steps GS1 Standards for Healthcare
4. Key Driver Patient Safety (Traceability)
4. Key Driver - Regulation FDA now requires all Class 3 Medical Devices to have Unique Device Identification (UDI) 2015/2016 Class 2 Medical Devices (many companies will be compliant ahead of deadline) No UDI = No Sales EU Regulation expected by 2016/2017 (harmonised approach) Legislation for barcoding of all medicine packs for Pharma products is also being put in place UDI = Unique Identifier, Barcode and Product Data
4. HBS Drivers for GS1 Standards adoption Internal Patient Safety* (Traceability) Increase Supply Chain Efficiencies Patient Level Costing External Increase in Product Recall Legislation (falsified medicines directive and medical devices regulation (UDI)) Policy Change (Money Follows Patient) Drive for cost savings Local Healthcare User Group (HUG) (01) (10)A1C2E3 April 2013 MOU signed between HSE and GS1 Ireland *See McKinsey report Strength in Unity
4. HBS already uses GS1 Standards Existing Programmes: HSE Surgical Instrument Trays & Endoscope track and trace Only National programme of its kind in the world SJH first pilot site for the HSE Now LIVE in 35+ HSE Sites HSE OPAT (leveraging Haemophilia model) New Programmes (WIP): Procurement National Product Catalogue eprocurement ICT HSE Services Directory
4. Current Challenges Paper based processes Time consuming, manual Everyone using a different code for the same product Standardised Information captured via barcode Future Track and Trace is much easier, faster and more accurate when done electronically based on Global Standards ie: Using Standardised coding and data
4. What is driving the need for Standardised coding? Current systems of product catalog numbers include duplicate identifiers for different products across manufacturers Manufacturer Catalog # Description Medtronic Mosaic 305 Porcine Heart Valve. BD mL BD SafetyGlide Syringe.. J & J Protectiv IV Catheter System.. Current system allows product re-identification by every stakeholder in the supply chain, making product tracking efforts extremely difficult Manufacturer Product # Distributor Product # MT Hospital or Healthcare Provider Product # M-5905 Source, Jackie Elkin, Medtronic
4. Barcode Levels in Healthcare 100% 80% 60% 40% 20% 0% % No Code % Not GS1 %GS1 Source GS1 Australia Medicines Year %GS1 % Not GS1 % No Code % 0.3% 26.5% % 9.8% 4.2% % 1.1% 1.8% 100% 80% 60% 40% 20% 0% % No Code % Not GS1 %GS1 Medical Devices Year %GS1 % Not GS1 % No Code % 11.4% 32.5% % 10.0% 32.6% % 13.4% 11.0% Similar results have been found by the GS1 Ireland Healthcare User Group
4. How does the barcode support traceability? NYFUL ? NYFUL Nov 2014 NYFUL ERP Entries GTIN: EXPIRATION: 21.Mai 2012 BATCH/LOT: SERIAL: Barcode Scanning allows the Product to be linked and traced back to the Patient Record
5. Summary Key Messages GS1 Standards: Make a well-evidenced contribution in healthcare The Standards have been shown to improve patient safety and quality of care by minimising the risk of errors occurring The Standards are also used for more effective and efficient supply chain management, resulting in significant cost savings
