1 By Hannah Morgan In this one-hour presentation entitled Using Twitter: Add Real-Time Networking to Your Job- Search Campaign, Hannah Morgan, co-author of the book Social Networking for Business Success focuses on Twitter and how you can utilize it to create connections and build your network for career development. This Top Tips provides a summary of the techniques presented, including time stamps for each so you can go to the place in the recording where it is explained. I. Twitter is an open network (01:05). You can follow anyone and anyone can follow you. The beauty of it is it makes for a really great networking opportunity. There is a dynamic exchange of information and insights on Twitter. A. Statistics on why Twitter makes a good network for job search and brand awareness (02:50) 1. 83% of Fortune 500 companies have corporate Twitter accounts (03:00.26). If you are pursuing a Fortune 500 company, chances are great that you can get information that they share in real time. You may also get the opportunity to interact with them % of recruiters are on Twitter (03:51). You have a great opportunity as a jobseeker because it's not as noisy and crowded to stand out on Twitter % of recruiters found positive information on social networks that made them likely to want to hire somebody, and even better, 23% of recruiters found information on a social network that led them to hire the candidate (04:17). B. Build your Twitter profile (05:36) 1. Header and Avatar Image (05:58). Should be professional and reflect who you are and what you want to be known for. 2. Name and user name (06:17). Should clearly identify who you are. 3. Bio (06:28). 160 characters or less. Use keywords to show what you want to be known for. MBA Get Hired Boot Camp Page 1
2 4. Link to website or LinkedIn profile (06:37). A place where you want people to know more about you professionally. C. Make sure you plant a few smart on-brand tweets (07:26). When someone looks at your Twitter profile, they will see not only your bio but your most recent tweets. D. Twitter terms (08:39) 1. Tweet (08:43). A status update in 140 characters. 2. RT or Retweet (08:58). Sharing someone else's tweet. (09:08). A reply or a mention. A way to publicly reference somebody. 4. DM or Direct Message (09:23). It's like an or a private message. You must follow each other to send DMs. 5. Shortened url (09:46). When you share a link, Twitter will shorten it for you. You may also use link shortening tools. 6. # or Hashtag (10:04). A fancy way of tagging or categorizing a tweet. It can be searched, indexed and referenced later. II. Who to follow on Twitter (10:27) A. Categories of accounts that can benefit any job-seeker (10:33) 1. Industry magazines/publications 2. Experts (Speakers, authors, bloggers) 3. Recruiters 4. Job boards 5. Career Coaches 6. 3 1. Find a Twitter account. 2. Follow Twitter account. 3. Add to your list. a. Public list - anyone can follow this list. b. Private list - only you can access this list. C. Search Twitter bios to discover new people (13:46) 1. Advanced search (13:58). 2. WeFollow (15:27). A resource that keeps track of people. It's a free directory. Focused on newsfeed information. 3. Follower Wonk (16:43). A free directory. 4. Buzzsumo (18:55). 5. X-ray searches (20:32). Use your favorite browser and enter site:twitter.com tweets "city" "job title or company" - intitle:jobs -inurl:(status statuses) 6. Company websites (22:19). Usually companies have a link to their Twitter accounts on their websites. 7. Other Twitter lists (22:41). 8. Follower peeps (22:46). Follow people that your followers are following. 9. "Who to follow" (22:51). Twitter recommendations of people you can follow based on the algorithm of the people you are already following or have recently followed. III. Networking on Twitter A. Acquire Useful Info (25:36) 1. Read profile and tweets (26:50). Gives you a better idea of who this person is and make it more comfortable to potentially reach out. B. 6 Ways to Get Noticed on Twitter (29:55) 1. Follow someone. 2. Add somebody to a list. 3. Retweet somebody's tweet. 4. Favorite a tweet. 5. Mention someone. 6. 4 1. Retweet immediately without a comment. 2. Retweet with edits. 3. Tweet for all to see. Important note: If you want everyone to see your tweets, don't start with symbol. IV. What to say on Twitter (35:32) A. Tweet topics 1. Quotes (36:25). Quotes that contain pictures are very powerful, but you can still always use text-based quotes. 2. News (36:52). Share news on upcoming events, for example, or tweet right from the event. May also include general shoutouts such as information on a new job post or announcement of a new book, etc. 3. Tips/info 4. Offer help (41:09). Doing good and paying it forward is the logic of how networking happen. 5. Ask/answer questions 6. Your own content (43:12). Could be a blog post, testimonial, case study or portfolio of your work. B. Characteristics of a good tweet with examples (44:13) 1. Ideal length is between characters. These get retweeted more. 2. Tweets with images receive 150% more retweets. C. Samples of Self-Promotional Tweets (46:23) D. Interact on Twitter Chats (50:45). There are several types of Twitter chats happening. 5 E. Twitter Don'ts / Turnoffs for Recruiting Managers (52:28) 1. Illegal drug references 2. Sexual Posts 3. Wrong spelling/bad Grammar. Always check those tweets before sending them out. 4. Profanity 5. Guns 6. Alcohol F. 3 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Tweeting (54:23) 1. Is your tweet interesting and readable? 2. Is your tweet interesting enough to click? 3. Is your tweet compelling and built to be retweeted? G. Sample hashtags relevant to job-seekers (55:10) 1. Job Search a. #JobOpening b. #Hiring c. #NowHiring d. #Resume e. #Job or #Jobs 2. Industry (#Accounting, #Marketing, etc) 3. Events 4. Cities 5. Others a. #FF (Follow Friday) b. #TBT (Throwback Thursday) V. Use Twitter to search for jobs (57:44). 6 A. Buffer (01:00:06). An add-on that essentially allows you to schedule a tweet for later or add it to a queue. It also allows you to edit a tweet. B. TweetDeck 01:01:32). Helps you organize and manage tweets by topics or lists. C. Hootsuite (01:03:50). A social media dashboard that allows you to share status updates on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and Google Plus. D.
