1 US Outlook for Thermoplastic Elastomers with forecasts to 2005 and 2010 Demand for thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) in the United States is forecast to rise 5.7 percent per year to 1.4 billion pounds in 2005, significantly outpacing real (inflation-adjusted) growth in the US economy. The most rapid gains will be achieved by thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) and thermoplastic polyolefins. Continued requirements for "soft-touch" and ergonomic grips and handles found in the consumer product, industrial product and motor vehicle markets, for example, will promote strong growth for TPVs, since these materials possess similar characteristics to rubber and are also easy to process and capable of being used in complex designs. The industry encompasses more than 50 companies, with the top five suppliers -- Kraton Polymers, DuPont, Advanced Elastomer Systems, Noveon and Dow Chemical -- accounting for 43 percent of total sales in 2000.

3 Study Highlights Demand for thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) in the United States is forecast to rise 5.7 percent per year to 1.4 billion pounds in 2005, significantly outpacing real (inflation-adjusted) growth in the US economy. Improvements in over-molding capabilities and extruded TPEs are among the more promising developments in the industry. Motor vehicles, the largest market for TPEs, will continue to offer excellent long term prospects as suppliers enhance performance properties (e.g., fogging resistance and heat resistance), allowing these products to become viable competitive materials in a variety of applications traditionally held by thermoset rubber and thermoplastics. The industry encompasses more than 50 companies, with the top five suppliers -- Kraton Polymers, DuPont, Advanced Elastomer Systems, Noveon and Dow Chemical -- accounting for 43 percent of total sales in Freedonia Industry Study 2

7 Market Environment The Market Environment Section discusses factors influencing thermoplastic elastomers demand, including environmental and market trends, as well as competitive materials. This information provides you with an understanding and an analysis of the climate in which the thermoplastic elastomers industry operates. MARKET ENVIRONMENT Global Thermoplastic Elastomers Demand In 2000, the global market for thermoplastic elastomers totaled 3.2 billion pounds, with the US representing 34 percent of the total. As is the case in the US, the world TPE market is linked to such markets as motor vehicles, industrial products SAMPLE PAGE and medical products. Outside the US, footwear accounts for a larger portion of thermoplastic elastomer demand than in the US primarily because of the continuing move of US production to the Latin America and Asia/Pacific regions. Nevertheless, demand for thermoplastic elastomers is heavily concentrated in the developed world, primarily North America, Western Europe and Japan. Global demand for thermoplastic elastomers is forecast to increase 6.1 percent per year to 4.3 billion pounds in The major industrialized nations, such as the US and Japan, will continue to dominate overall demand for thermoplastic elastomers due to their dominance in the production of items that contain thermoplastic elastomer materials such as motor vehicles, appliances and sporting goods. In addition, requirements for recyclable materials tend to arise from industrialized nations. As such, these environmental concerns will continue to promote demand for thermoplastic elastomers in developed nations. The increased requirement of recyclable materials in motor vehicles, for example, stems from progressive environmental legislation originating in Western Europe. This has promoted TPE demand in the motor vehicle market throughout the world, primarily because automakers do not want to produce a variety of vehicles which conform to different sets of regulations. As the TPE market matures in developed nations, much of anticipated gains will be linked to the development of new applications. In Japan, for instance, thermoplastic elastomers are making inroads into the automotive dynamic weather 6 Freedonia Industry Study

8 Thermoplastic Elastomer Products These Sections provide information on suppliers, pricing trends, and demand for historical years and forecast growth to 2005 and Thermoplastic Vulcanizate - Demand by Market THERMOPLASTIC VULCANIZATES This information helps you: Analyze your company's growth potential in the industry. Outline your strategic plans for five and ten years out. Establish sales goals. Thermoplastic vulcanizate elastomers are used in a variety of markets, including motor vehicles, industrial products, consumer products, wire and cable, and construction, as well as various small volume end uses (e.g., medical products and aerospace equipment). The largest outlet for TPVs is motor vehicles, where demand is forecast to reach 95 million pounds in This market will feel the effects of a projected deceleration in the production of largersized vehicles (e.g., sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks and minivans). However, these factors will be mitigated by intense product development efforts, particularly in exterior applications. Above-average gains are projected for the consumer product and construction markets, as well as various other end uses. In the consumer product market, for example, increased soft-touch requirements will continue to drive growth. Expanding applications in soft-touch end uses will partially be attributable to the development of expanded over-molded capabilities. Below-average gains are forecast for industrial products, and wire and cable due to the effects of a slowing US economy. 9 Demand by Market This Section analyzes trends and considers the threats and opportunities in each of the major markets for thermoplastic elastomers. The information presented will help you: Focus your sales and marketing efforts on high growth areas. Propose new areas for development. DEMAND BY MARKET Appliance & Houseware Shipments - Thermoplastic Elastomer Demand Demand for thermoplastic elastomers in the appliance and housewares market is SAMPLE PAGE forecast to increase 4.7 percent per year to 98 million pounds in 2005, a deceleration from the pace set in Gains in demand will be restricted by a significant slowing in appliance shipments, particularly in major appliances, where TPEs find a significant portion of their use. Nonetheless, opportunities will continue to exist due to continued replacement of metal, thermoset rubber and thermoplastics with TPEs in various applications, as well as the development of a wider range of over-mold capabilities (where TPEs are molded to a rigid substrate in order to provide aesthetic or functional benefits). In 2005, the appliance market is expected to account for 60 percent of TPE demand in the consumer market. The leading applications for TPEs in major appliances are in washing machines (e.g., hose connectors, detergent compartment seals, fill/rinse hoses and filter seals), clothes dryers (e.g., dryer door seals, dryer drum rollers and soft touch grips), refrigerators (e.g., compressor mounts, hoses, pipes and gaskets), dishwashers (e.g., dishwasher door flanges and dishwasher sump boots), air conditioners, garbage disposals, ice makers and ranges. In refrigerators, for example, TPEs are expected to continue to displace PVC and thermoset rubber in pipes and gaskets. Industrial Product Markets for Thermoplastic Elastomers Major applications for TPEs in small appliances include blenders (e.g., lids, (million pounds) couplings), mixers (e.g., grip feet), food processors (e.g., seals and motor mounts), toaster and warming ovens (e.g., knobs), irons (e.g., strain relief grips) and vacuum Item cleaners (e.g., caster 1990wheels, 1995 seals, dirt 2000 bellows, 2005 bumpers and 2010 handles). The strong presence of independent compounders in TPE production is based on the suitability of these materials for custom processing for specific performance properties, coupled with their high performance, rubber-like characteristics, and use in niche and smaller-volume applications. Since this segment is somewhat SAMPLE PAGE more accessible to new entrants, competition continues to increase. Kraiburg and Thermoplastic Rubber Systems are among the new entrants in the US TPE compounding segment. In 2001, Kraiburg constructed its first North American TPE compounding plant in Duluth, Georgia. The company offers its TPE compounds under the THERMOLAST K brand name. Krailburg is expected to add a second line to the Duluth plant by the end of Thermoplastic Rubber Systems, which was launched in 2000, produces TPE compounds at a plant in Shirley, Massachusetts. The company s TPE compounds are based on either TPVs or SBCs and are marketed under the NEX brand name. Unlike polymer producers, compounders in the US TPE industry tend to participate in several product segments. Many TPE compounders are expanding capacity, constructing new plants and introducing new grades. Among the major US TPE compounders are AlphaGary (Rockwood Specialties), GLS, Multibase, Nova Polymers, PolyOne, Spartech and Teknor Apex. AlphaGary provides TPE compounds based on styrenic block copolymers, thermoplastic vulcanizates, thermoplastic polyolefins and thermoplastic polyurethanes. The company s TPE compounds are marketed under the GARAFLEX, GARATHANE and EVOPRENE tradenames. EVOPRENE TPE compounds were introduced in 2000, designed primarily as a silicone alternative in disposable medical product applications.
