NO_PA, Inc A All About Money All About Money By ReadWo rks Money can be coins. Money can also be paper. People use money to buy things. That is called spending. People don t spend all their money at the same time. They keep some for another time. That is calle d saving. Many people keep their money at a bank. A bank is a place that keeps money safe. Here are some names for money in the United States: A penny equals one cent. A nickel equals five cents. A dime equals 10 cents. A quarter equals 25 cents. A half-dollar equals 50 cents. One dollar equals 100 cents. Page 2 of ReadWorks, Inc. All rights reserved.
NO_PA, Inc A What Can I Buy? What Can I Buy? By ReadWo rks People use money to buy things. They can buy goods and services. Goods are things. You can touch them. Clothes and food are goods. Toys are goods. Books are goods. Services are things people do for you. Having your teeth cleaned is a service. Getting a haircut is a service. Getting your car cleaned at a car wash is a service. Sometimes a good can be part of a service. If you go to a diner, a person cooks for you. That is a service. You also get food. Food is a good. Can you name any other goods and services? Page 3 of ReadWorks, Inc. All rights reserved.
2014 NO_PAWhat Is a Budget? Is a Budget? How much does your favorite snack cost? How many dollars do you spend each week? Can you spend less money to save some? Making a budget is a good way to answer those questions. A budget is a plan for how to spend and save money. Companies and countries have budgets to manage their spending. Putting together a budget can help you, too. Do you get a weekly allowance? That is a regular amount of money you might receive to pay for things such as snacks, games, and toys. What would happen to a boy who got his allowance on Monday and spent it all by Wednesday? He would not have any money to spend for the rest of the week! You can avoid that proble m by following a budg e t. First, fig ure out how much you have to spe nd. Include money you earn, gifts you receive, and money you have already saved. Next, write down what you spend money on each week. Maybe you will find you are spe nding a lot on snacks. Cutting down would he lp you save some money every week. You could then use your savings for something special. That is the benefit of a budget! Page 4 of 7
2014 NO_PAWhat Is Trade? Is Trade? Steven Depolo (CC BY 2.0) Have you ever swapped sandwiches with a friend at lunchtime? Trade is the name we give to any exchange of one thing for something else. Trading can take place between people, companies, and countries. Trade involve s se rvice s, mone y, and g oods. Maybe you mowe d your ne ig hbor s lawn, and she paid you. That was trading a service for money. Or maybe you traded your scooter for a friend s video game. That was trading goods. People and countries may trade because they have too much of one thing and need something else. For example, in some countries, people grow a lot of rice. They produce more than they need for themselves. That allows them to sell their rice to other countries. The buyers of the rice send money to the sellers. The sellers might use that money to buy goods or services. Trade allows people to sell, buy, or exchange goods and services to get what they need. Page 5 of 7
2014 for Sale for Sale NO_PACrayons What is the best tool for making colorful pictures? There is a good chance you answered crayons. Crayons come in many colors and are easy to use. The crayons we use today are made of wax and coloring. They are not very different from the first crayons sold more than 120 years ago. An early box of crayons included eight colors. The colors were red, blue, yellow, green, violet, orang e, black, and brown. The box cost five ce nts. As crayons be came more popular, more colors were added. Crayon makers then decided to sell boxes with forty-eight crayons. Later, companies made boxe s of sixty- four crayons. Today, the re are all kinds of crayons for sale. You can buy washable crayons, color- chang ing crayons, g litte r crayons, and more. In 2001, one crayon company aske d pe ople to vote for the ir favorite color. The winne r? Blue. One crayon company in the United States makes more than ten million crayons each day. That s about three billion crayons in the United States each year. That is enough crayons to circle the earth at le ast four time s! Page 6 of 7
NO_PA 2014 Oranges from Tree to You Oranges from Tree to You Oranges are round, juicy fruits that grow on trees in places with warm weather. How does an orange get from the tree to your refrigerator? People who work as fruit pickers move through groves filled with orange trees. When an orange is ripe, the picker clips it off the tree. All picked oranges are then carefully moved to a packing plant. In the plant, oranges are placed on a machine with moving rollers. Special brushes wash the fruit as it rolls along. Next, each orange is dried. Another machine lines up the oranges in boxes. A computer checks each box. Any oranges with spots or damage are removed. Orange growers want to produce good fruit that people will buy. Finally, each orange is given a sticker and placed in a box. Full boxes are shipped in cool trucks to store s. People who work in the store place the oranges on shelves. Then someone from your family comes to the store. Your family member chooses a few oranges, buys them, brings them home, and puts them in your refrigerator. Then, one day, you open your refrigerator and there those oranges are, ready for you to eat!
