3 SALES TRANSACTIONS WARM UP CHAPTER 16 Tell me what are some of the employer s procedures and policies of employer s that you have observed at your place of work or at your favorite retail store as a customer when paying with: Cash Checks Debit cards Credit cards Answer these questions when you buy something: Do you pay in cash? Do you get a receipt? What do you do with the receipt? If you were a sales person what would be the most challenging thing about each type of transaction? Name a store that you often shop. Is it equipped with conventional cash registers with conventional cash registers or POS stations? WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BUY SOMETHING? An electronic cash register can function as a point ofsale (POS) terminal if it is connected to a network that keeps track of sales, inventory, and even ordering new merchandise. This new generation of cash registers functions as a sales and a marketing tool. POS terminals are used to update store inventory and record customer preference information as soon as a purchase is made ( Barnes and Nobles) Type of sales transactions Cash Sales Sales Check Debit Card sales Credit Card sales Layaway sales On approval sales COD sales 3

MATH FUNDAMENTALS Writing Whole Numbers: Digits: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, and 9 These symbols are called digits SEPARATE THE NUMBER INTO GROUPS OF THREE DIGITS: UNITS, THOUSANDS, AND MILLIONS. UNITS: HUNDREDS, TENS, ONES THOUSANDS: HUNDRED THOUSANDS, TEN THOUSANDS, THOUSANDS MILLIONS: HUNDRED MILLIONS, TEN MILLIONS, MILLIONS Knowing Place Name for reading decimals and writing them in words UNITS: HUNDREDS, TENS, ONES THOUSANDS: HUNDRED THOUSANDS, TEN THOUSANDS, THOUSANDS MILLIONS: HUNDRED MILLIONS, TEN MILLIONS, MILLIONS Decimal place names apply to digits to the right of the decimal point. E.g ) Begin with the whole number to the left of the decimal point 2) Read or write and for the decimal point 3) Read or write the number to the right of the decimal point as a whole number 4) Use the name of the decimal place of the final digit 4
5 MATH FUNDAMENTALS Fractions are numbers used to describe or compare parts of a whole Numerator the top number, represents the number of parts being considered Denominator represents how many parts in a whole For example: the shaded are in the rectangle below is 3/5 3 shaded parts = 3 5 total parts 5 Mixed Number: a whole number and a fraction together 6/5= 1 1/5 Decimal Number: another way to write a fraction or mixed number whose denominator is a power of 10 : 5.3= or 3/10 or 5 3/10 HOW DO YOU WRITE A CHECK AND CALCULATE IN DAILY LIFE SITUATIONS? You need to write the amount you are paying in decimal form and in written form. Find the solution: Maps to Go paid the following shipping charges in the first week of April: FedEx $14.75, $28.00, $14.75; UPS: 23.69, $84.27, $47.88, $119.57, $ What was their total shipping charge for the week? PERCENTAGES Percentage: means part of 100 Percentages are used frequently in sales, commission, discounts, and mark ups. Important Skills: Converting whole numbers to percentages; converting fractions to percentages 0.7 x 100 = 70% 70% = 70/100 = x 100 = 5% 5% = 5/100 = x 100 = 250% 250% = 250/100 = 2.5 3/8 = 3 divided by 8 = 37.5% 5
6 TAX Tax: is a consumption tax charges at the point of purchase for certain goods or services. The tax is usually set as a percentage by the government charging the tax. Example: Product Price: $ Tax Rate: 6% 100 x 0.06 = 6 then = 106 Tax: $6.00 Total Price of Product: $ RETURNS, EXCHANGES, AND ALLOWANCES Stores have policies when the customer brings back merchandise. It may be refunded in cash or credit. Allowance is a partial return of the sale price for a merchandise that the customer has kept. A transaction that involves returning an item for a replacement with the same price is an even exchange. How to handle Sales Tax in return or Exchange transactions? If I returned to Party City merchandise priced at $79.78, How much did I received back from Party City? GRATUITY Gratuity: or tip is a payment to a service worker beyond the advertiser s price; usually calculated by adding a percentage to your bill Gratuity is mostly given in situations like restaurants, cab rides, etc. Example: Popular dinner gratuity = 20% Dinner price: $24.00 Gratuity: $24 x.20 = $4.80 Dinner plus gratuity: $24 + $4.80 = $
7 COMMISSION Commission: a form of payment to an agent for services rendered; usually a percentage of total sales Commission is used in the following professions: retail, real estate, sales, etc. Example: Retail salesman gets 40% of its sales Sales = $655 for the day Commission: $655 x 0.40 = $262 Retail sales earns $262 for the day. Some retail salesman, get paid hourly or salary PLUS commission MARK UPS Mark up: where retailers add a dollar amount (or mark up) to its cost to arrive at a price. Percentage mark up: where retailers add a percentage to its cost to arrive at a price Example: BASIC: Product Cost: $12 Mark up: $3 Product Price: $12 + $3 = $15 PERCENT: Product Cost: $12 Percent Mark up: 50% $12 X 0.50 = $6 Product Price: $12 + $6 = $18 HOW DO YOU FIGURE OUT PERCENTAGE MARK UP? Retail Price Cost = Mark up $82.50 $49.50 $33.00 (Mark up = $33) Mark up/retail Price = Mark up % on retail price $33.00/82.40 =.4 Then change decimal to percentage..4 x 100 = 40% Percentage Mark up = 40% Cost ( C ) + markup (MU) = Retail Price (RP) 7
8 MARK DOWNS To reduce the quantity of goods in stock, a business will sometimes mark down (reduce the price) merchandise by a certain percentage or dollar value. Example: Hamburgers: $6.75 Mark down: 20% Dollar Mark down: $6.75 x.20 = $1.35 Sales Price: $6.75 $1.35 = $5.40 PREVENTING THEFT! Over $33 billion each year is lost due to inventory theft! There are many ways to deter shoplifting: Adequate lighting store layouts Store expensive items in locked display cases Tag products with electronic anti theft devices Install security cameras How do you prevent pilfering and unauthorized discounting?
