Overview Today: What is social media? What are the basic types? What can you do with Facebook, the social media leader? Next time: What are some more specialized forms of social media? What are some of the more interesting, amazing, or concerning things social media can do?
What is Social Media? Social media is a set of internet-based tools that facilitate interaction, discussion, and community, allowing people to be entertained, share information, and build and maintain relationships
Types of Social Media
Types of Social Media Six basic types: Social networking sites Collaborative projects Blogs Content communities Virtual game worlds Virtual social worlds
Social networking sites Applications that enable users to connect by creating personal profiles, allowing friends/colleagues to have access to them, and sharing updates with their connections Facebook is the prime example New ones pop up (e.g., Google+) and old ones fade away (e.g., MySpace) with regularity Specialized networks are common, too E.g., LinkedIn for business, Pair for couples, CafeMom for mothers/ pregnant women
Collaborative projects Joint, simultaneous creation of content by lots of end users Wikis Wikipedia being the obvious example More specialized ones exist

Collaborative projects Joint, simultaneous creation of content by lots of end users Social bookmarking sites People find websites, blogs, pictures, or other content they find interesting, and share them with others who may potentially find them interesting, too Some allow users to submit and vote on what they like Others are more geared toward collecting and sharing what you find curation is the goal

Blogs Special websites used to publish short entries, usually in (reverse) chronological order One or more people can manage the content (typically only a few people produce content) But there s lots of opportunity for interaction through blog comments Some are through blogging services, like Blogger and WordPress Others are standalone sites
Blogs Microblogging: just like blogs, but with limited post size Best known are Twitter (140 characters) and Tumblr (any format, but brief) Users tend to follow many other users to see their posts as they happen Hashtags (#) allow you to follow particular topics (e.g., #Olympics) Both encourage a lot of sharing of links, articles, images, video, and more, enable you to share other people s work (through retweets), and allow directed communication in Twitter, for instance)

Content communities Any website, forum, app, or service designed to help users share specific media content This content can be anything: Video (e.g., YouTube) Books (e.g., Goodreads) Photos (e.g., flickr, Instagram, Lockerz) Reviews (e.g., Yelp, Amazon, Trip Advisor) Recipes (e.g., Chowhound, Food52) Even PowerPoint slides (e.g., SlideShare)
Content communities Forums are a popular form of content communities They allow very specialized knowledge to be shared Some are part of a large blog or other website Some are more specialized Each has their own culture, rules, expectations, etc., so familiarize yourself with them first Most forums have a post at the very top to tell you what expectations are, and what punishments are for violators
Virtual game worlds Games in which users can interact with others via personalized avatars Some are isolated games World of Warcraft, EverQuest are the prime examples Some are connected to other social networks Zynga s business is based on these sorts of games Although you can play their games on their own, too Farmville, Words with Friends, Draw Something, etc.
Virtual social worlds People interact in online worlds via avatars; their interactions are less restricted than games, with the only limitations typically being those of real life Except, of course, you can shape your avatar to be whatever you would like it to be Second Life is the most prominent example The Sims combines aspects of both types of virtual worlds
Types of social media To summarize: There s a lot more to social media than Facebook and Twitter
Types of social media
Types of social media To summarize: There s a lot more to social media than Facebook and Twitter Each type of social media allows you to do unique things You can easily find a niche to belong to, or find content of interest

Some Facebook advice Don t forget it s public Other people can see what you say, so don t make any comments you wouldn t say in front of that person s friends in person Don t step on toes, either One exception: Facebook Messages, which work like internal to Facebook Facebook is for friends Don t invite strangers Don t feel like you have to accept every friend request
Some Facebook advice Don t post too much A couple of times a day is all right, but more can be overwhelming Same with likes, comments, and shares Try to find the right tone Don t complain too much Don t brag or be overly proud of your perfect life Don t post things that are overly vague or intended to provoke
Facebook is the king of social media
Why is Facebook so popular? Because it s so popular! Network externalities are the effect other users have on the value of a product The behavior of others doesn t just provide information Network externalities can amplify the influence of prior adopters Other examples include Facebook planned its rollout just right: It started small, saturated that market, slowly grew into related markets, and took its time going national
What s special about Facebook? What features of it might make it so appealing to consumers? Social media takes advantage of some pretty powerful psychological forces People like to be social People like people like them People like to feel special People like to create things People like rewards People like to share
To summarize Facebook is a great tool for communication Between friends, and between fans It changes often, but the basic features remain the same The newsfeed gathers information about your friends in one place; you can organize it how you d like Your timeline gathers information about you in one place, including friends, pictures, and pages you ve liked Thoughtful interaction can help you navigate Facebook and take advantage of what it has to offer
Next time We ll talk about Some other popular social media sites Some fun and creative uses of social media Some unique ethical considerations for social media users For now, any questions?
