2 P a c k a g i n g a n d t h e B r a n d O w n e r : E u r o p e For vendors of print technology to packaging and label converters, and for converters themselves, a key to success is understanding the opinions and preferences of brand owners. Nowhere is that more true than in Europe, a rich, varied region that leads the world in packaging innovation. Brand owners are the end customers for packaging and label converting, and what they want is what drives demand for all converting services. Brand owners thinking is the focus of Packaging and the Brand Owner: Europe which reveals their views on key issues, including future needs, and offer valuable insights to suppliers of print technology and their converter customers. Introduction Packaging and labels are critical to brand management for makers of consumer goods. Meeting the needs of brand owners is thus the core objective of package and label printing. In label printing, color digital printers are a growing alternate to conventional presses, while in folding cartons and flexible packaging, color digital printing is debuting as an option for printing short runs. Brand owners are welcoming because they need to target markets precisely and to be lean in manufacturing and supply chains, short run digital printing is a great benefit. Europe is the world s modern, dynamic epicenter for print technology for packaging and label printing. Top suppliers of print presses, software, and supplies are based there. Europe is also home to dozens of national and regional markets, a big spur to short run package and label printing. Finally, Europe leads the world in packaging innovation, whether in response sustainability concerns, lean manufacturing needs, new shelf strategies, or other causes. Packaging and the Brand Owner: Europe is a multiclient study that will reveal the opinions of brand owners there on many issues that affect label and packaging print purchases. This study answers specific questions about brand owners thinking, including: What concerns do they have about retail channels and consumer behavior? What concerns do they have about their own manufacturing and supply chains? Will short run manufacturing grow at their companies? How much? What sustainability features are most compelling to them? Why? If they use only analog print technology, why is that?

Concerns besides cost: toxicity, aroma, color matching, substrates? Concerns besides cost: counterfeiting, wasted print, timeliness? For what services or features are brand owners willing to pay extra? Security features? Unique codes? RFID? Augmented reality? Personalization? Structured Web Survey InfoTrends conducted a structured Web survey with 265 brand owners throughout Western Europe, all of them decision makers and influencers at consumer goods companies and some from packaging design agencies. We also conducted a Web survey with 100 European label and packaging converters, at least half of which offer color digital printing of some type. Interviews InfoTrends conducted personal interviews with 8 to 10 European brand owners and 8 to 10 converters of labels, folding cartons, or flexible packaging. The brand owners included buyers and non-buyers of color digital printing, and they represented small and large consumer brands. Converters included those with digital presses, conventional presses, or both. Desk Research InfoTrends studied publications about packaging design and converting, conference presentations and publications by consumer products companies based in Europe. Desk research also included a study of presentations, articles, and collateral from label and packaging converters and suppliers of presses, media, and software. Geographic Scope The project s research focused on Western Europe. The survey respondents were based in these countries: Germany, U.K., Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden. The project s desk research and its personal interviews with both brand owners and converters had this same geographic scope. Analysis & Project Deliverables This study provides deep analysis of the Web survey, interviews, and desk research to deliver valuable insights into the needs of brand owners.
