DIME AEGIS LIEE / NTUA ATHENS 2010 CONFERENCE The emergence and growth of Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship in a comparative perspective. Studying various aspects in different contexts April 29-30, 2010 Sectoral patterns and determinants of trademarking (very preliminary results) NSRF Observatory and ISCTE Lisbon University Institute

Sectoral patterns and determinants of trademarking Research questions: Can we identify different sectoral patterns of trademarking with regard to: Proportion of firms using trademarks? Distribution of trademarking among firms size classes? Distribution of trademarking during firms life cycle? What are the determinants of different patterns?

Sectoral patterns and determinants of trademarking Why trademarks? They play a crucial role in the process of marketing new entrepreneurial ventures in several sectors (including lower technology manufacturing industries and services). The use of trademarks has been actively promoted in those sectors in which the European economy has been facing increasing competition from emerging economies. There is a significant lack of knowledge about the patterns and determinants of trademarking.

Sectoral patterns and determinants of trademarking Data issues Data on trademark applications in Portugal since the 1980s is readily available from the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI),, but it includes almost no information on the owners. How to fill the gap: crossing INPI s database with Quadros de Pessoal database (QP/MTSS). Advantages: Census data Long series A lot of information on firms

Sectoral patterns and determinants of trademarking Preparing the data One of the databases includes the information on the firms fiscal number, the other doesn t The QP/MTSS database only includes information on domestic firms with employees (it excludes individual entrepreneurs and multinationals not registered as firms in Portugal). Of trademark applications between 1995 and 2006 we could already unequivocally identify (52%). The same proportion ( to ) applies for the period , 2006, under analysis here.
