3 The nbn Multi-Technology Mix The roll-out of the nbn network is one of Australia s biggest and most advanced technology projects. Most Australian homes and businesses are expected to be nbn ready by To make sure everyone has access to the nbn network as quickly as possible, NBN Co. is rolling out a new fibre optic network in combination with upgrades to existing telecommunications network infrastructure. This mix of different network types is known as the multi-technology mix. Don t worry this just means that NBN Co. chooses the type of network technology that will be used to provide your home or business with access to the nbn. 4 Best spots for installation include: What do I need to know? Whether you re nbn ready right now or starting to think about it, we ve got some handy tips to help you prepare. Can I ignore the nbn? No, the nbn network is replacing most existing landline phone and Internet networks across Australia. Every broadband household MUST choose a nbn service provider and connect to the nbn within 18 months of their address being ready for service. As part of the roll-out, services that haven t moved across to the nbn will be disconnected once the switch has been made in your area. Our nbn ninja will guide you through the process to take the worry out of switching to the nbn. What is the process for switching to the nbn? After you have placed an order, we let NBN Co. know that you are ready to be connected. For some nbn network technologies, a technician visit may be required to install new equipment. You have the right to ask for this equipment to be installed in a convenient and safe location in your home or office. If you don t own the property you will need to contact your agent/ landlord to agree where the equipment should be installed. It should take less than 6 weeks from placing an order to receiving the service. However, this depends on whether you require a technician. If you do, you will be advised during the sign up process this usually happens if the nbn is being installed for the first time at your premises. You can book the first available appointment 14 days from this time and you will be given a 4-hour window on that day. Most appointments take 2-4 hours, but it can take up to 8 hours depending on the work that needs to be done. How long will I be without internet while the switch is taking place? You may be without internet for 1-3 days, depending on the technology in your area. What will it cost me? Unlike ADSL, the great news is there are no installation costs unless you re in a new development or want an additional connection installed. What happens if I live in a new estate or bought my property off the plan? If your strata or building management has made an agreement with a provider, you will be bound to that agreement. If you re in a brand new residence, where the official street/postal address is yet to be finalised, please wait to place your order until this has been finalised to avoid any technical issues. A one-off $300 new development charge will be applied if your address is identified by NBN Co. as being within the site boundary of a new estate. Your nbn service provider will pass on this charge to you if it applies.
