1 - RTJ Joints are machined metal rings in accordance with the standards established by the American Petroleum Institute (API) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), for applications in high pressure and temperature situations. - A typical application of the -Joints is the Christmas Tree, used in oil production field. The seal is obtained at a contact line, by wedging action, causing high crushing pressure and, thereby forcing the material to leak in this area. The small seal area, with the high contact pressure, results in great reliability. However, the joint and flange contact surface must be carefully machined and finished. Some types are activated by pressure, meaning that, the higher the pressure, the greater the sealability. MATERIALS The materials must be forged or laminated. Cast materials should not be used. The table 1 shows the standardized materials according to ASME B standard and API6A for Joints. 3 RX Joint Shape speacially designed for use the internal pressure as a aid to sealling. The external face of the ring makes the incial contact with the flange, making the crushing and sealing. As the internal pressure of the line or equipment increase, the same happens with the contact between the ring and the flange, increasing the efficiency of the sealing. This characteristic makes this type more resistant to vibrations that occur during the drilling and sudden rises of pressure and impact, commonly seen in oil field work. The 9653 RX type is totally interchangeable with the 950 and 951 types, using the same accomodation in the flange channel and reference number. Designed to use only in API 6BXS flanges, in pressures from to PSI. The ring average diameter is lightly bigger than the flange s accomodation. So, the ring to be built stays pré-compressed by the external diameter, creating a sealing elevation effect with the increase of the operation pressure. The fittings that use BX 952 ring has a small interference. The ring is effectively stamped by the flange s accomodations and it can not be reused. 4 HARDNESS It is recommended that the hardness of the ring is always less than the flanges, in order to not damage it. This difference should be at least 30HB. MANUFACTURING S DIMENSIONING AND TOLERANCE When specifying the -Joint application, it is recommended to follow the standards indicators found below which give the dimensions, tolerances and the application tables. The Tightness factor M and Minimum Crushing Y Type M Y (psi) Carbon Steel 5, Stainless Steel 6, Monel 6, The Tightness Factor M and Minimum Crushing Y of a sealing material are the factors to be considering when the torque calculations of a joint gasket. They are experimentally parameters determined through laboratory result analysis relative to inherent characteristics of each specific material and according to the criteria apllied by the manufacturer. The ASME code s Division 1 Chapter VIII Appendix 2 establishes parameters for the joints designs with generic values of characteristics M (tightness factor, wich is always a dimensionless Constant) charascteristics and Y (Minimum crushing value) of the joint.
