3 Trial ID: CN Glyph Prod 03 Location: Ashland Otto East Study Director: Investigator: David L Regehr Trial Comments This factorial experiment compared ten glyphosate products for control of weed species with differing susceptibility. All products were applied at rates of 0.5, 0.25, and lb acid equivalent/acre. For glyphosate products formulated as 4 lb/gal isopropyl amine salts (containing 3 lb/gal acid), the product rates were 1.33 pt, 0.67 pt, and 0.33 pt/acre for 0.5, 0.25, and lb/acre acid, respectively. Products such as Roundup UltraMax and WeatherMax, containing higher concentrations of glyphosate acid, were applied at correspondingly lower rates of product. TECH is a dry formulation containing 96.7% glyphosate acid. All treatments were applied in 15 gal/acre water conditioned with ammonium sulfate, except for "N-Tank" in tmt #2 which already contained a water conditioner. As the rates of glyphosate product were reduced, Activate Plus, a non-ionic surfactant, was added to bring the surfactant load up to that of the 0.5 lb acid/acre rate. The front half of each plot was broadcast overseeded with large crabgrass (DIGSA) and Palmer amaranth (AMAPA). At application time, modest densities of 16-inch tall amaranth were over-topping 3-inch tall crabgrass. Velvetleaf (ABUTH), ivyleaf morningglory (IPOHE), rox orange forage sorghum (SORBI), and domestic sunflower (HELAN) were planted in rows across the rear half of the plots. They were not subject to over-topping, and spray coverage was excellent. Weed control was rated at 1, 2, 4, and 11 weeks after treatment. All ratings were done "blind" without knowledge of glyphosate product or rate. The accompanying data columns show the average (mean) of the first three ratings. The 11-week rating was not averaged in, as it was somewhat compromised by weed stress and death because of late-season water shortage. The factorial analysis showed no main effect (glyphosate product x rate) interactions. The table of B means shows significant effects of glyphosate rates in every rating for every weed. The weed with the least response to glyphosate rate was sunflower. This species is highly sensitive to glyphosate, and the 97% control with 0.5 lb acid was not significantly different from the 95% control with 0.25 lb acid. At lb acid, sunflower control dropped to 90%. The other weed with only modest response to glyphosate rate was rox orange forage sorghum (simulating shattercane). The weed with the greatest response to glyphosate rate was ivyleaf morningglory. For this species, even the highest rate used in this study might be considered marginal. Higher rates of glyphosate, or addition of tank-mix partners, are needed for morningglory control. The composite table of A means shows very few significant weed control differences attributable to glyphosate products. In the composite ratings, rox orange control was less with Clearout 41 Plus and Glyphomax Plus. In the individual rating dates (data not shown), there were no significant (<0.05 probability) glyphosate product main effects on crabgrass, ivyleaf morningglory, rox orange and sunflower. The tables of A means for individual ratings showed several glyphosate product main effects. For instance, at 1 week after treatment (WAT), Touchdown and Glystar Plus showed less Palmer amaranth control than the other products. At the 2 WAT rating, and thereafter, these differences were gone. Similarly, at 1 WAT, Touchdown and GF887 showed less velvetleaf control than the other products, but these differences were also gone by the next rating.
