Plasma - The fourth state of matter following solid, liquid, and gas. Plasma is an ionized (electrified) form of gas. In plasma cutting, a gas such as Nitrogen is sent under pressure through the torch where it begins to swirl and is forced out a small orifice at which point it passes through an electric arc and the gas is ionized. The electricity excites the electrons of the gas atoms. It results in a very quick, clean cut and imparts little heat into the base metal. Plasma is one step down from a laser. File Requirements All computer files for the LTEC Gas and Plasma Cutting Machine must be in either a.dxf or.cad file format.our machine shop can convert some JPEG and Adobe Photoshop files to.dxf for an additional charge. Bob Dean Supply has three TIG welding stations and six MIG welding stations located in its 20,000 square foot shop. A mobile welding truck with Heli-Arc trailer is also available for on location welding jobs and emergency repairs. TIG Welding TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas welding. Also called GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) and Heliarc which was Linde s trade name for the TIG process when it was introduced many years ago. The arc is started with a tungsten electrode shielded by inert gas and filler rod is fed into the weld puddle separately. A slower process than MIG, it produces a more precise weld and can be used at lower amperages for thinner metal and can be used on exotic metals. MIG Welding Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) is frequently referred to as MIG welding. MIG welding is a commonly used high deposition rate welding process. Wire is continuously fed from a spool. MIG welding is therefore referred to as a semiautomatic welding process. The shielding gas forms the arc plasma, stabilizes the arc on the metal being welded, shields the arc and molten weld pool, and allows smooth transfer of metal from the weld wire to the molten weld pool. MIG Welding Benefits include all position capability, higher deposition rates than SMAW, longer welds made without starts and stops, and minimal post weld cleaning. / 9
6 Waterjet Cutting What is Waterjet Cutting? Waterjet cutting is best described as an accelerated erosion process that is carefully controlled. For this reason, waterjet can cut or erode through virtually any material known, making it one of the most versatile machines available. The natural erosion process involves no chemicals or heat. Because of this, warping and distortion typically associated with laser, plasma and oxy-fuel cutting is eliminated, therefore minimizing the need for secondary processing. Advantages of Waterjet Cutting Tolerances tighter than +/ are achievable, especially in thinner materials such as 1/8 stainless steel. Materials ranging from 10 stainless steel to acrylics can be cut by waterjet, making it a very versatile tool. Stacking of very thin materials to increase productivity is possible. Kerf ranges from to Taper and edge finish are directly related to cut speed. The greater the speed, the more taper and the coarser the edge finish. As the waterjet slows down, taper can be eliminated and the finish of about 120 achieved. Processing Waterjet In Any Industry The versatility of the waterjet allows it to be used in nearly every industry. There are many different materials that the waterjet can cut. Some of them have unique characteristics that require special attention when cutting. 8 About Structural Shapes Carbon Steel Shapes - Bar and Structural When the greatest dimension (length excluded) of a shape is less than 3 inches, it is classified as a bar size shape. However, when at least one of its dimensions (length excluded) is greater than 3 inches, it is classified as a structural shape. These shapes are used for general structural purposes and for riveted, bolted or welded construction on bridges and buildings. These shapes can be welded by all welding processes and the results are extremely high quality welds and joints. The design, thickness of section, service requirements, etc. are factors that determine the grade of welding rod to be used. Standard Designations for Structural Shapes Angles - An angle is a structural shape whose cross section resembles the letter L. Angles are available with either equal or unequal legs. The dimension and thickness of its legs are used to identify an angle; for example, L6 x 4 x 1/2. The dimension of each leg is measured along the outside of the angle, and for unequal-leg angles, the dimension of the wider leg is always given first, as in the example just cited. The third dimension applies to the thickness of the legs, which always have equal thickness. Angles are used primarily to support, brace, or connect other structural members. They may be used as single members, or they may be used in combinations of two or four to form main members. W Shapes - Doubly-symmetric wide flange shapes used as beams or columns whose inside flange surfaces are substantially parallel. The W-shape is the most widely used structural member for beams, columns, and other load-bearing applications. It has parallel inner and outer flange surfaces that are of constant thickness. This flange design provides greater cross-sectional area in the flanges, which results in greater strength than is provided by the S-shape, which has a slope of approximately 17 degrees on the inner flange surfaces. Includes Wide Flange Beams. S Shapes - Doubly-symmetric shapes produced with inside flange surfaces with a slope of approximately 17 degress. Includes I-beams, M Shapes - Doubly-symmetric shapes that cannot be classified as W, S or bearing pile shapes. Includes Junior Beams. C Shapes -The C-shape is similar to the S-shape in that its inner flange surface is also sloped approximately17 degrees. The C-shape is especially useful in locations where a single flat surface on one side is required. When used alone, the C-shape is not very efficient as a beam or column. However, efficient built-up members may be constructed of charnels assembled together with other structural shapes and connected by rivets or welds. Includes Channels. MC Shapes - Channels that cannot be classified as C shapes. Includes Junior Channels (stair stringers), Ship Channels and Car Channels. Angles - Bar Estimated Weight - Lbs. Plates 3/4 and smaller are produced to the lowest carbon range (.10 to.20) for maximum cold forming and welding properties. In 3/4 to 1-1/2 plate the carbon range is.15 to.25 which gives improved machining while retaining its forming and welding properties. Plates over 1-1/2 have carbon in the range of.20 to.33. This is a killed steel that provides the best combination of strength, weldability and structural soundness. ASTM A709 / Grade 36 Plate - A structural quality product designed for use in welded, bolted, or riveted fabrications such as oil rigs, buildings and bridges. Produces with a minimum yield of 36,000 psi. A36 plate can be used in the construction of a variety of lightweight structures and equipment where good welding properties are important. ASTM 514B (T1 & Type A Reg) Structural Quality - A quenched and tempered high strength alloy steel designed for construction type applications and produced to minimum mechanical properties. T1 plate provides good formability, high strength, toughness at subzero temperatures, and weldability with minimal preheating requirements. ASTM A285 /Grade C - Fire box and flange quality designed for fusion welded boilers and pressure vessels where moderate strength and good forming are required. ASTM A515 / Grade 70 - Greater strength than A285 and intended for mid- and high temperature boilers and pressure vessels. It is silicon killed, coarse grained steel that required careful welding techniques. ASTM A516 / Grade 70 - Similar to A515 but intended for lower temperatures. Finer grain and improved notched touchness. ASTM A572 / Grade 50 - INX-EXTEN has a 50,000 psi minimum strength level. Offers high strength in combination with good formability and weldability. Thickness Lbs/Sq.Ft /16 thickness and larger are classified as plates Sheets ordered by gauge weight or thickness are subject to standard thickness and weight tolerances The Galvanized Sheet Gauge is based on the U.S. Standard Gauge Each Galvanized Sheet Gauge Number is 2.5 ounces per sq. ft. heavier or.0037 thicker than the weight or thickness of the corresponding U.S. Standard Gauge Number, regardless of coating or weights. Hot Rolled Rods and Bars Merchant Bar Quality - These bars should be free from visible piping. However, seams and other surface irregularities may be present. A general purpose mild steel which is easily fabricated by the usual methods. It is used in structural and non-critical applications involving mild cold bending, mild hot forming, punching and welding. Not recommended for forging, heat treating or intricate machining operations. ASTM A575 and QQ-S-630. Low Carbon - M Low carbon, general purpose merchant quality steel that features economy and formability and weldability. Hot Rolled Strip is often referred to as band iron. Used for a variety of applications requiring a steel that can be cold formed, such as strapping, banding, ornamental iron work, brackets, etc. M Low carbon, general purpose merchant quality steel. Produced to wider carbon and manganese ranges that standard steels. Suitable for forming and welding. Medium Carbon - M Similar to AISI Contains smaller amounts of manganese (.25/.60) therefore its strength and responsiveness to heat treatment are slightly lower. ASTM A36 - These bars are designed for use in structural applications. 36,000 psi yield strength and 58,000 psi tensile strength. Cold Finished Rods and Bars Low Carbon This is a low carbon steel with a medium manganese content. Features good hardening properties, fair machinability and superior cold bending and forming use. Used for parts requiring cold forming, such as crimping, bending or swaging. Responds to any standard hardening methods including carburizing and heat treatments. Easily brazed and welded. Suitable for shafting and all applications that do not require the greater strength of high carbon and alloy steels. ASTM A-108. Ground & Polished Shafting (TG&P) Turned, ground and polished (TG&P) - Bars feature accurate size, straightness and concentricity to minimize wear in high speed applications. Because cold drawing strains are not developed these bars can be machined asymmetrically, such as for use in keyseating, with minimum distortion. TG&P bars combine the strength of cold drawn stock with additional accuracy and a lustrous finish. ASTM A-108 and QQ-S-637. 23 Steel Tubing Selection Guide Structural Steel Tubing is economical, has a high strength-to-weight ratio and is easily welded, formed, punched and drilled. The tubing s hollow shape protects and conceals wires, pipes, and moving parts and can be left exposed. It can be subjected to most fabricating operations. Ductilbility is good and the tubing bends well, flattens, cuts, punches, flares, flanges and welds easily. Light Structural Tubing is electric resistance welded and is made from low carbon 1020 strip. The homogenous weld is as strong as the parent metal. Outside welding flash is removed on all sizes. Inside welding flash is controloled on all sizes under 2. This economical tubing is readily formed, bent and swagged. Sections have flat sides, small corner radii, excellent torsional properties and high strength-to-weight ratios. Excellent for applications where outside finish is important.
