The overwhelming raw material for the electric furnace steelmaking process is recycled steel scrap. Recycled steel scrap consists of post-consumer and pre-consumer portions depending upon the sources and requirements for each steel plant. In addition to the recycled steel scrap, a small percentage of non-recycled raw materials, including pig iron, direct reduced iron and ferro-alloys, are used depending upon the metallurgical requirements. We do not routinely track which suppliers provided the scrap for any particular batch of steel. However, in general, at least 80% to 90% or more of the scrap we use comes from suppliers located within approximately 200 miles of our mills. Gcrdau Aineristeel's own steel recycling facilities provide approximately 40% percent of all the recycled steel scrap used in our steel mills. The individual Gerdau Arneristeel mills select scrap based upon metallurgical needs and costs. In general, it is estimated that at least 80-90% or more of the steel scrap used by Gerdau Ameristeel comes from locations within 200 miles of the producing mill and % within 500 miles of the producing mill.
