1. Introduction Regular monitoring of the cylinder drain oil in two-stroke marine diesel engines is considered crucial, especially in the context of latest changes in the operating conditions of vessels. Due to the necessity to reduce fuel expenses, ship operators commonly choose slow steaming practices, namely operating on reduced power. Besides, the new design of two-stroke engines with longer piston strokes is intended to lower fuel cost as well. These factors may lead to the lower operating temperatures and as a result to the phenomenon of cold corrosion. A decrease in engine temperature causes water condensation on the cylinder liner walls. The condensed water in combination with sulphur from the combustion process form sulphuric acid which can cause substantial wear of cylinder liner and therefore increased concentration of iron. With the help of the test kit IRON CHECK the degree of iron particles concentration in cylinder drain oil can be measured and the level of the cold corrosion can be thus determined. The test is based on a chemical reaction of indicator solution with iron present in its special state - corrosive and/or abrasive. Iron can be detected from 50 mg/kg upwards. 2. Test Kit Components

Safety Advice Before starting the test appropriate ventilation of the room has to be ensured. It is important to read and understand the Material Safety Data Sheets. During the test procedure gloves and safety glasses have to be worn for protective reasons. If a solution spill occurs, it should be cleaned immediately with a cleaning cloth. 4. FE Heating Bath Preparation Before starting to prepare the relevant cylinder drain oil samples for the analysis, the heating bath has to be prepared. As the required amount of water to be filled into the heating bath directly depends on the quantity of glass vials with oil samples, it is first necessary to determine how many cylinders will be examined and, therefore how many glass vials with samples are necessary. The following proportions have to be followed: 12 glass vials = 188 ml of water 10 glass vials = 232 ml of water 8 glass vials = 276 ml of water 6 glass vials = 320 ml of water 4 glass vials = 364 ml of water 5
When the required amount of water is filled into the heating bath, the bath gets switched on for heating up (by pressing the green power button). During the heating process the control light on the heating bath is glowing red. As soon as the optimal temperature is reached, the control light turns automatically off, and the bath is ready for glass vials to be placed into it. 5. Preparation of FE Indicator Solution The FE Indicator Solution is necessary for dilution of cylinder drain oil samples. 1. For preparing the Indicator Solution, the plastic beaker needs to get filled with 25 ml of distilled water. 2. One full measuring spoon of the FE Indicator powder has to be added. 6
3. With the help of the glass rod, the distilled water and the FE Indicator powder should be thoroughly mixed until clear light-yellow solution is obtained. Note: The prepared amount of the Indicator Solution is sufficient for both tests: to measure the total iron content in oil samples and to measure corroded iron caused by acid attack alone. 6. Measuring Total Iron Content in Cylinder Drain Oil Samples Representative cylinder drain oil samples are required for the analysis. Note: To ensure significant results it is possible to get a sample with MARTECHNIC sample equipment in a sample bottle during the normal operation. Important: In case several cylinders will be examined it is important to inscribe the corresponding cylinder numbers on the plastic plugs of the glass vials before preparing the samples. 7
6.1. Preparation of Oil Samples 1. Fill the glass vial with 10 ml of the TFE Solution. Use the measuring cylinder and hopper for this purpose. 2. Add 5 drops of the prepared FE Indicator Solution from the plastic beaker with the help of a pipette. 3. Close the glass vial with a plastic plug and shake well the mixture. 4. Important: Shake the sampling bottle thoroughly in order to ensure that all particles are homogenously spread in the oil sample. Draw 0.5 ml of the cylinder drain oil from the sampling bottle with the help of a syringe. 8
5. Squeeze carefully the oil out of the syringe into the glass vial with the mix of TFE Solution and FE Indicator Solution. Close the glass vial with the plastic plug with the corresponding number of the cylinder on it. Note: Do not shake the glass vial and avoid mixing of the oil with the obtained solution. 6. The same procedure should be repeated (steps 1-5) for all further cylinder drain oil samples Testing Oil Samples in the FE Heating Bath 1. Once all cylinder drain oil samples are prepared, place the glass vials into the heating bath. 2. The reaction time for measuring the total iron content in oil samples is 8 minutes. Use the provided stopwatch to record the time. Important: For accurate test results, please, follow carefully the specified time in this instruction manual. 9
6.3. Analyzing Test Results 1. After 8 minutes have elapsed, the glass vials with cylinder drain oil samples have to be taken out of the heating bath immediately. The liquid in the glass vials has changed its color in accordance to the total iron content in the oil sample. Important: Please, proceed with the analysis directly after that. 2. To determine the total iron content in the oil samples, the provided FE color comparison chart should be used. The glass vials have to be moved along the color comparison chart until no difference in color can be observed. As soon as the matching color is found, the test results can be then noted and interpreted. Note: The matching color can be fully identical with the liquid color in the glass vials or the liquid color can be in-between two colors of the color comparison chart that are located next to each other. 10
7. Measuring the Content of Corroded Iron in Cylinder Drain Oil Samples For determining the content of corroded iron caused by acid attack alone, the same prepared heating bath and the Indicator Solution are to be used. The only difference is in the preparation procedure of the oil samples and the time in the heating bath required for the reaction to occur Preparation of Oil Samples 1. Fill the glass vial with 10 ml of the distilled water. Use the measuring cylinder and hopper for this purpose. 2. Add 5 drops of the already prepared FE Indicator Solution from the plastic beaker with the help of a pipette. 3. Close the glass vial with a plastic plug and shake well the mixture. 11
4. Important: Shake the sampling bottle thoroughly in order to ensure that all particles are homogenously spread in the oil sample. Draw 1.0 ml of the cylinder drain oil from the sampling bottle with the help of a syringe. 5. Squeeze carefully the oil out of the syringe into the glass vial with the mix of the TFE Solution and FE Indicator Solution. Close the glass vial with the plastic plug with the corresponding number of the cylinder on it. Note: Do not shake the glass vial and avoid mixing of the oil with the obtained solution. 6. The same procedure should be repeated (steps 1-5) for all cylinder drain oil samples Testing Oil Samples in the FE Heating Bath When measuring the content of the corroded iron in the oil samples, the time needed for the reaction to occur is 15 minutes. Important: For accurate test results, please, follow carefully the specified time in this instruction manual. 12
7.3. Analyzing Test Results The analysis is conducted with the help of the FE color comparison chart and the procedure is completely the same as described in step Determining Abrasive Iron Content in Cylinder Drain Oil Samples The content of abrasive iron for the specific cylinder drain oil sample is defined through the difference between the total iron content and the content of corroded iron. 9. Maintenance and Cleaning The FE heating bath must get emptied, dried and cooled down. All rests of the FE Indicator Solution have to get poured away. The beaker, measuring cylinder, syringes, pipettes and glass rod have to be thoroughly cleaned before using them for further tests. As the glass vials are designed only for single use, please, dispose of the used vials accordingly. Note: All the equipment necessary for the test must be dry and clean. Any contamination can cause incorrect test results. 10. Environmental Concern and Disposal Considerations Martechnic follows the principle of environmental responsibility and organizes its work on the basis of the environmental management system. Due to the adherence to environmental policies, Martechnic recommends to properly dispose of the used test equipment and reagents according to local regulations and products specifications. More detailed information on the ecological aspects and disposal considerations can be found in the Material Safety Data Sheets. 13
