4 Corporate History SCI was founded in 1987 as Superconductive Components, Inc. Initially, the company conducted R&D of high temperature superconducting materials and devices. This led to production of advanced ceramic compositions for sputtering. In 1991, due to an increase in demand for sputtering and laser ablation targets, the company opened a division called Target Materials, Inc. (TMI). In 2002, SCI and TMI merged to become SCI Engineered Materials, Inc., evolving into a manufacturing company of PVD materials for a variety of industries.
