TEAM MENTOR Contract Length: Temporary contract (October December 2016) Location: Nottingham Reporting To: NCS Regional Programme Manager Salary: 390 fixed term for the autumn project cycle. This will cover the following: Training & Induction: Friday 14 th October (12-5pm) Phase 1 (4-day residential): Monday 24 th October Thursday 27 th October Phase 2 (3-day non-residential): Friday 28 th October Sunday 30 th October Graduation: TBC (Late November-Mid December) ABOUT THE ROLE Team Mentors are responsible for supporting young people participating on the National Citizen Service programme. You will work as part of a team to achieve the NCS programme outcomes, complying fully with all partnership policies and such relevant legislation as affects this programme e.g. safeguarding, equal opportunities, health and safety, data protection. ABOUT THE PROGRAMME The National Citizen Service (NCS) aims to be a rite of passage for 16 and 17 year olds and to promote a more cohesive, responsible and engaged society. The NCS Programme is focused on 4 key outcomes for the young people that participate: Social mixing: improving attitudes towards others from different backgrounds, strengthening and broadening social and support networks. Community involvement: increasing willingness to engage and help out, acknowledge and develop an awareness of influence in their local communities. Teamwork, communication and leadership: increasing confidence in meeting new people, putting forward new ideas, and trying new things. Transition: facilitating the transition to adulthood and improving attitudes towards work, education and training. Elevation Networks will be delivering the NCS programme for 16 and 17 year olds living, working or studying in Nottingham until 2018. The delivery cycles are divided into spring, summer and autumn seasons.
THE PHASES The National Citizen Service is divided into four phases: Phase One (Outward Bound Residential): Full-time (3 nights, 4 days) residential programme away from participants local community, with a focus on teamwork and outdoor physical challenges. This provides an opportunity for personal and social development through a series of physical and mental challenges to push participants out of their comfort zones. Phase Two (Community Residential): Full-time (3 days) programme based in participants home community, with a focus on developing new skills and serving groups in the community. Teams should use a shared passion to build on their teamwork and project management skills and develop an interest in community service. Phase Three (Social Action project): Team Mentors do not work this phase of the programme. Graduation: Attendance at the relevant Graduation Event, and ensure maximum attendance from the team members, and manage their behaviour according to the participant. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES Assist with the coordination of a team(s) during the residential phases of the programme Ensure all health and safety protocols are followed in line with project guidelines Guide team discussions and tasks in accordance with project outcomes Support Team Leader(s) with challenging behaviour and building a team rapport Be a positive role model at all times Facilitate some ice breaker sessions and/or assist with the guided reflection activities Please note that this job description serves only as a guideline for your responsibilities and is not a definitive list. PERSON SPECIFICATION Experience, Skills, Knowledge Essential: A passion and enjoyment for working with young people An understanding of the needs of 16-17 year olds and how to engage them Experience of working in a fast-paced and demanding environment
Excellent communication and team building skills Good spoken and written communication Attend one training date prior to the programme start Be optimistic and have a positive outlook Desirable: Experience of volunteering or working with young people aged 16/17 specifically Previous knowledge/experience of the NCS programme Experience of fundraising or managing an event Experience of working directly with young people with disabilities A current first aid qualification A youth work qualification A recent and valid DBS certificate (enhanced or standard) Previous training in child protection or safeguarding This role will require a standard level DBS check (formerly known as CRB) and an understanding of safeguarding.
