Work is performed under direct supervision of the Fleet Supervisor and is evaluated on repair efficiency and procedure application. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Associate's Degree or Two year technical/trade school certification in the field of fleet maintenance and repair AND One year experience as a heavy equipment technician, auto OR An equivalent combination of education and experience to total three years. Required License: Valid Driver's License Within 6 months of hire the incumbent MUST obtain: A valid Commercial Vehicle Drivers License, Class A with air brake and tanker endorsements. Obtain a Minnesota DOT Commercial Vehicle inspection certification number. Attend First Aide training class through the EDGE Program. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions. 1. Perform detailed preventive maintenance, repairs and procedures to enhance equipment and vehicle safety, operators' safety, value and productivity.
Page 2 of 5 Perform equipment failure diagnosis and repair. Changes fluids and filters by mileage, hours and times and checks machine system functions as provided by the preventive maintenance schedules. Conducts vehicle and equipment repairs to include engines, transmissions, rear axles, suspensions, hydraulics, cooling systems, brake systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, computer systems, air systems and controls. Documents and records all repairs, parts, labor costs, vehicle number or other required information related to the repair or maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Performs emergency field repairs to quickly get equipment back in operation or back to the shop for more permanent problem resolution. 2. Assist in pre-delivery and setup of new vehicles and equipment and any other modifications needed to improve safety, efficiency and productivity of the purchased units. 3. Perform welding and cutting procedures for repairs and fabrication projects from detailed instructions. 4. Maintain effective repair parts, lubrication oils and fuel inventories. Repair and adjust on all fuel islands at all County owned Facilities. Assist Fleet Supervisors and Fleet Specialist in maintaining the equipment parts inventory including purchasing and restocking shelves. 5. Provide technical assistance to county and non county staff involving county fleet operations. Test and operates all vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and proper operation. Perform required safety inspections on all vehicles, trucks and equipment. Keep abreast of changes to industry standards and repair procedures. Initiates communication with supervisor to discuss improvements in work procedures. Instructs county staff in the correct use of the fuel island systems. 6. Perform other duties as assigned by the Fleet Supervisor or the Fleet Manager. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Duties 1-5 are essential functions. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES AND WORK ENVIRONMENT Ability to effectively communicate and follow directions. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, companies and the general public. Ability to perform strenuous work on a daily basis requiring physical strength and coordination. Ability and skill to operate diagnostic and test equipment to determine the nature of equipment malfunction. Ability to operate all types of light and heavy equipment. Basic knowledge of operation principles of gasoline and diesel engines and of the mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, snow equipment and computer systems of all equipment used by all County and non-county customers. Skill in the use of electric, air and hand tools and computerized testing equipment. Ability to comprehend and make decisions based on written materials such as repair manuals, schematics, drawings and retain information presented in a structured lecture format. Skill in the use of welding and torching equipment including being able to select the correct thickness and types of materials. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Must be able to perform the following in a complex ever changing work environment, on a daily basis: bending, turning/twisting, kneeling, climbing, reaching out, grasping, manipulating fingers and lifting 50 to 75 pounds frequently and 75 to 100 pounds occasionally. Exposures may include, but are not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, dirt, oil, grease, solvents, fumes, noise and all hazards associated with an equipment repair shop. Equipment used but not limited to includes: hand tools, electric power tools, air tools, electronic testing equipment, welders, cutting torches, personal computer, personal safety equipment and any of a large list of light and heavy equipment.
