Actualization of River basin Management of an insular district : unusual methodology applied to Corsica district Catherine FREISSINET Agnès CABAL from SOGREAH France

Summary The Corsica district WFD application : a participative methodology Characterisation of river basin Further characterisation Actualization of river basin management plan (SDAGE) Building the programme of measures

The Corsica district an insular basin The Competent Authority for the district is : Water agency / Agence de l eau Rhône Mediterranée et Corse The river basin comity is composed of : CTCorse : Corsica regional governance DIREN : environmental regional agency Water agency Economical and NGO representatives The district contains 9 bodies of groundwater 70 bodies of surface water including river bodies and reservoirs 4 ponds 14 bodies of coastal water

The Corsica district Water status and environmental objectives In Corsica water bodies are mostly in good status except for some weakened areas Non deterioration and restoration objectives are to be considered because of exceptional quality of water environment and because of the socioeconomic valorisation of this water richness

The Corsica district Identification of pressures Main environmental damages are : pollution (pesticides, toxic substances, urban waste water discharges, ), Water abstraction (irrigation, hydroelectricity production, drinking water, ), Physical damages of aquatic environment (urbanization, dam ).

The Corsica district Stakes Human health stakes : drinking water quality Environmental stakes : maintaining and restoring water quality and biodiversity at the specific level of Corsica Economic stakes : harmonizing economic development (structural development) and ambitious environmental objectives

WFD application : a participative methodology Characterisation of river basin

WFD application : a participative methodology Characterisation of river basin The Corsica river basin comity ( Comité de bassin) adopted a participative methodology since the first step of WFD implementation : River basin characterization has been build with local expertise and added values from local actors representatives WFD programme has been launched with local actors within geographical comities
