ENVIRONMENTAL TRAINING AND MASS AWARENESS During the year 2006, ETU has organized 19 training courses in the field of Environmental Management; Environmental Monitoring and Assessment; Hazardous Substances/Solid Waste/Bio-Medical Waste Management, Environmental Laboratory Management, Analysis and Quality System; Pollution Control (Waste Management, Clean Technology); and Environmental Information etc. Besides, one orientation cum training programme was organized for newly recruited JRFs of CPCB. ETU also trained more than 15 officials from CPCB within the country and overseas training programmes organized by external agencies in the specialised areas. Mass Awareness Activities Distribution of Water Testing Kit The Central Pollution Control Board has developed a Water Testing Kit for mass awareness to students, NGOs and public at large. Using the kit, one can perform 5 physical (Colour, Odour, Temperature, Turbidity and Suspended solids), 13 Chemical (ph, Alkalinity, Dissolved Oxygen, Total Hardness, Calcium, Magnesium, Chloride, Fluoride, Nitrate, Ammonia, Phosphate, Iron and Residual Chlorine) and 3 Biological tests (Total Coliform, Primary productivity and Benthic animals). The main objectives of this WTK are to create mass awareness among students, NGOs and the public and to provide low-cost Water Testing facility. The kit has been designed not only to test water samples but also to serve as a scientific, informative, thought-provoking and educative tool to students, NGOs and the public.

CPCB has distributed 20 Water Testing Kits to various Schools, Colleges, NGOs and other organizations. The WTK technology developed by CPCB, has been offered to Rajiv Gandhi Mission for Drinking Water, Department of Drinking Water Supply, Ministry of Rural Development as requested by the Mission for fabrication of WTK at large scale for assessment of rural water quality in the country. Taj-Mahotsav During (February 2006), the CPCB s Project Office Agra organized an Environmental Awareness Camp at Taj-Mahotsav that was primarily meant for promoting locally made handicraft / cottage craft materials. During this festival, there was display of materials on solid waste / plastic waste / bio-medical waste materials besides there was display of monitoring equipments, data trend on ambient air quality etc. A series of brochures / handbills were released on this occasion. By virtue of initiatives / request from CPCB, the organizers had restricted polythene use and allowed logical use of plastic and polythene (as prohibited under the law) in the premises. The display has attracted huge crowd and received lot of appreciations. Non Governement Organiosation Activity Three numbers of regional Interaction Meeting with NGOs located in different States were organized for coordination of the activities and promotion of the

public participation/awareness in the pollution control programmes in the country, as under: The CPCB s Project Office Agra organized a day long Interaction Meet for NGOs in North zone on March 27, 2006 at Agra. About 25 NGOs from UP, Uttaranchal, Haryana, Delhi made their participation in the interaction meet. The NGOs Chintan and Toxic Links (both from New Delhi) made illustrative presentation on the MSW Rules, options and practices. The local issues were raised by the distinguished participants of various states viz. slaughter house issue at Ghaziabad, water pollution problems in river Aril, noise pollution and its control, planning strategies and urbanization, control of traffic, environmental issue due to rapid industrialization at Gurgaon and its adjoining areas, etc. are being taken up at the appropriate level.. Interaction Meet for NGOs in West zone organized through Zonal Office- Vadodara on November 3, 2006 at Vadodara for NGOs of Western Region. Participants from Gujarat, Maharashtra and UT of Daman participated in the Program. Interaction Meet for NGOs in Central Region organized through Chattisgarh Environment Conservation Board during 26-27 November 2006 at Raipur. Organization of Seminar (Green Summit) with IPHE The CPCB s Project Office Agra in collaboration with Institution of Public Health Engineers, Kolkata organized a two-day national seminar on Green Summit 2006 at Agra during March 2006 in which the elements of green building in Indian context was discussed at length. About 70 participants of about 24 organizations including Development

Authorities, ULBs made their participation at the summit. Sixth National Level Training Programme for Pollution Control Officials on Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment due to Transportation of Hazardous Chemicals A training programme on Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment due to Transportation of Hazardous Chemicals has been organised by CPCB at Disaster Management Institute (DMI), Bhopal during December 04-08, 2006. Officials from various State Pollution Control Boards have participated. The salient objectives of the programme were as below: To highlight the technical, managerial and legal issues involved in HIRA To help participant to understand various techniques of hazards identification and risk assessment Simulation of release/ fire/explosion scenarios through advanced computer modelling Participation in World Environment Day Programme in Bangalore World Environment Day has been of specific notation because of presence of His Excellency, Dr. A.P. J. Abdul Kalam, President of India during inauguration of the Environmental Exhibition organized jointly by Government of Karnataka and Karnataka State Pollution Control Board at Central College Bangalore. His Excellency, The President of India asked the pollution Control Boards to work on installation of mini thermal power plants utilizing municipal waste. Complete recycling of fly ash as green building material and manure was specific attention in his address. Hon ble President further emphasized on synergy mission for environmental up- gradation. The theme chosen for this is year is Desert & Desertification with the slogan Do not desert the dry lands. The Central Pollution Control Board Zonal Office, Bangalore had put up a stall exhibiting the working models of new technologies like the decentralized Wastewater Treatment System (DEWATS), Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Adsorption technology for color removal. DEWATS model was on display showing the line of treatment adopted in the field. Display charts were also put up related to noise pollution, National Ambient Air Quality Monitoring, DEWATS, etc. A short documentary movie was screened showing the working of DEWATS. Participation in exhibitions Annual ECO-MEET Cum Exhibition

The Central Pollution Control Board participated in the Annual ECO-MEET Cum Exhibition organized by Department of Environment, Govt of NCT Delhi held at IG Stadium near Delhi Secretariat on 30 th November and 1 st December,2006 Other Training and Mass Awareness Activities at Vadodara One day training Program on Environmental issues was organized at Vadodara for Secondary and Sr. Secondary school teachers.
