EWE Network regions in Germany Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 3

Political goals considering energy and environment form the frame of actions Brussels 20% decrease of greenhouse gas emissions 20% increase in energy efficiency 20% increase in share of renewables Berlin Doubling the share of electricity from combined heat and power to 25% Increase of share of renewables - up to 30% in electricity generation - up to 20% in fuel - up to 14% in heating Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 4

The e³ programme: New prospects for energy supply Some assumptions for the future: In the future, an increasing number of private households and businesses will produce electricity as well as using it. Plants that produce electricity from renewable energies and small power plants that generate both electricity and heat will become increasingly popular. This trend will give people the opportunity to share responsibility for the energy supply of the future and become less dependent on conventional large-scale power plants. ENERGY CONSERVATION ENERGY EFFICIENCY RENEWABLE ENERGIES E 3 Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 5

Decentralised energy production at EWE Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 6

Decentralised energy supply What does that mean? Definition: Decentralised energy supply is characterised by the production of electrical and thermal energy in many small plants close to consumers. That means: small plant sizes -> easier and shorter construction and approval times but less thermodynamic efficiency and higher specific costs That fits to: rural regions few metropolitan areas minor density of population Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 7

Structure of decentralised energy plants at EWE Installed power (2008) 100% decentralised photovoltaics 0,4% CHP natural gas 16,8% Energy feed-in (2008) 79% renewable 32% combined heat and power photovoltaics 0,1% CHP natural gas 20,3% wind 43,2% CHP renewables 4,6% wind 39,5% CHP renewables 10,4% digester gas 1,2% landfill gas 0,4% biomass 11,1% biogas 3,5% backup power systems 18,6% digester gas 1,5% landfill gas 0,4% biomass 21,8% backup power systems 0,8% biogas 5,2% Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 8

EWE The future needs ideas The alpha ventus offshore wind park EWE and its partners E.ON and Vattenfall are setting up and will jointly operate Germany s first offshore wind park in the North Sea. The alpha ventus offshore wind park 46 km off the North Sea island of Borkum, outside the national park zone Water depth of between 28 and 32 metres 12 five-megawatt wind turbines manufactured by Multibrid and REpower 60 km of underwater cable A three-phase 110-kilovolt grid connection Norderney Borkum Wilhelmshaven Cuxhaven Bremerhaven Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 9

EWE The future needs ideas The Weser Stadium in Bremen EWE is fitting out the Weser Stadium in Bremen with the largest photovoltaic system ever to be installed on a sports stadium: Installed capacity: 1.2 megawatts Yield: 840,000 kwh p.a. CO 2 conservation: 450 tonnes a year Power output sufficient for about 250 households 200,000 solar cells Active solar cell area: 16,000 m 2 (larger than two football pitches) Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 10

emobility A strategic partnership in the field of electric mobility Eco-friendly motorised transportation and mobile electricity storage devices have a part to play in the energy supply of the future EWE and Karmann (Osnabrück) are working together in the field of electric mobility A number of pilot vehicles will be constructed between 2009 and 2011. The cars will be used for joint research. The electric vehicles will be incorporated into EWE's electricity and telecommunications network and intelligent control systems will be developed for battery and network management The rechargeable batteries (blue) are integrated into the floor of the E3 car to save space. Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 11

CALLUX Field trial of fuel cells for residential buildings Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 12

EWE Efficiency for the future Fuel cells in practice The basic energy requirements of a house can be met efficiently by using fuel cells: Fuel cell heaters can generate both electricity and heat CO 2 conservation of up to 35% can be achieved EWE has been testing fuel cell devices made by different manufacturers in practical trials for years In the years ahead this technology is to be developed to market readiness Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 13

Consortium and project goals Launch of gas-driven fuel cell heating appliance to be prepared Demonstrate technical maturity, support further improvements to ensure market ready products Develop supply chains by winning binding orders for large numbers Enhance product profile on the market Continue work on concepts for supply structure integration Support training / further training of market partners Validate requirements against customers and the market Promote the creation of added value in Germany Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 14

etelligence Ideas, intention and method Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 15

What is the R&D project etelligence? etelligence is a winner of the technology competition E-Energy initiated and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). funded by the Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 16

What is the idea behind etelligence? The etelligence idea: intelligent system integration of electricity generation and consumption using modern information and communication technologies (ICT). etelligence develops and proves: a regional electricity market place, feedback systems, tariffs, incentive programs as well as control systems, a Plug&Play ICT infrastructure as well as international standards. Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 17

How does etelligence work? Market place etelligence brings together power producers, consumers, energy service providers, and network operators on a regional market place. Plug&Play ICT infrastructure by the use of modern ICT and international standards, a Plug&Play ICT infrastructure for communication with producers and consumers is implemented. Intelligent system integration market place and ICT allow for the automated control of producers and consumers. Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 18

How does etelligence work? Example The electricity consumption of a cold storage house may be controlled in such a way that short-term fluctuations in wind energy production are compensated for. Decentralised energy production at EWE Ulli Arndt, EWE AG 26.11.2009 19

Summary The expansion of decentralised energy production is a fundamental part of the EWE strategy e³ With the help of fuel cells we can implement at medium term decentralised and efficient technologies scaled down to households EWE shows a future energy system with the intelligent system integration of producers and consumers, with enables to optimize: - operating efficiency - security of supply - environmental compatibility EWE strikes new pathes, come along with us!
