What is Horizon 2020? EU framework programme for Research and Innovation A core part of Europe 2020, Innovation Union & European Research Area: Responding to the economic crisis to invest in future jobs and growth Addressing people s concerns about their livelihoods, safety and environment Strengthening the EU s global position in research, innovation and technology Coupling research to innovation from research to retail, all forms of innovation
Covering the whole R&I chain 5
Agricultural Research and Innovation Challenges (to be) faced by agriculture call for ambitious research and innovation at national and EU levels Better links between research and agricultural practice are necessary to foster innovation The CAP, EIP-AGRI and Horizon 2020 are coming with instruments and resources to contribute to this endeavour
EIP-AGRI Launched by the Commission in February 2012 (COM (2012)79) Aim: Fostering a competitive and sustainable agriculture and forestry sector that achieves more from less interactions across the supply chain also to be tackled Approach: Closing the innovation gap between research and practice and forming partnerships by: Using the interactive innovation model Linking actors through the EIP-AGRI Network Shape existing knowledge into solutions
AGRI-FOOD research under HORIZON 2020 Excellent science ERC, Marie Curie, FET, Infrastructures, Societal challenges 1. Health, demographic change and wellbeing 2. Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime research and the bioeconomy 3. Secure, clean and efficient energy 4. Smart, green and integrated transport Industrial leadership 5. Climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials LET, Risk Finance, SME 6. Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies 7. Secure societies Ca. 3,8 bn
Interactive innovation formats in SC2 Work Programme Multi-actor projects How the project proposal s objectives and planning are targeted to needs/problems and opportunities of end-users To ensure sufficient involvement of key actors with complementary types of knowledge (scientific and practical) in the project consortium. Common format for practitioners ('practice abstracts'): shared through the EIP network Thematic Networks compiling knowledge ready for practice Bottom-up Sector related or focus on a cross-cutting issue across the sectors (e.g. sustainability metrics, precision farming) Feed into EIP-AGRI network

Innovation opportunities under the CAP (Rural Development Programmes) Supporting the implementation of EIP-AGRI Funding for setting up of an Operational Group : farmers, advisors, agribusiness, researchers, NGOs, etc) planning an innovation project (Art 35) Involvement of OGs in MA projects is recommended Project funding for the Operational Group s project (Art 35). This co-operation could be combined with other RD measures (e.g. investment, knowledge transfer, advice) Supporting innovation support services
State of play : number of planned EIP Operational Groups in approved RDPs 2014-2020 RDPs can be modified once a year * Sum of the regional programmes
EIP-AGRI network connects all actors
EIP-AGRI Focus Groups, tackling agricultural challenges Priorities for innovative actions Ideas for Operational Groups Exchange practical knowledge Research needs from practice Propose projects to test solutions
