3 What is Horizon 2020 The new Horizon 2020 programme, currently under adoption, is the EU s framework programme for research and innovation for the period A core part of Europe 2020, Innovation Union & European Research Area: Responding to the economic crisis to invest in future jobs and growth Addressing people s concerns about their livelihoods, safety and environment Strengthening the EU s global position in research, innovation and technology

4 What's new A single programme bringing together three separate programmes/initiatives* Coupling research to innovation from research to retail, all forms of innovation, including non-technological Focus on societal challenges facing EU society, e.g. health, clean energy and transport Simplified access, for all companies, universities, institutes in all EU countries and beyond The 7 th Research Framework Programme (FP7), innovation aspects of Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP), EU contribution to the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT)

9 Societal Challenge 2 Specific objective Secure sufficient supply of safe, healthy and high quality food and other bio-based products, by developing productive, sustainable and resource-efficient primary production systems, fostering related ecosystem services and the recovery of biological diversity, alongside lowcarbon supply, processing and marketing chains Accelerate the transition to a sustainable European bioeconomy, bridging the gap between new technologies and their implementation

12 Horizon 2020 is different Supports all stages in research and innovation chain, including closer to market Promotes linkages and interfaces across research areas with particular attention to cross-disciplinary and crosssectoral R&I Strong challenge-based approach, allowing applicants to have considerable freedom to come up with innovative solutions Broader topics, less prescription, strong emphasis on expected impact Cross-cutting issues mainstreamed (e.g. social sciences, gender, international ) 12
