. Technical Information SILACOLL 160 Mineral Based Adhesive for industrial Bonding SILACOLL 160 is a ready-to-use, incombustible adhesives based on soluble silicates. SILACOLL 160 is designed for automated gluing of fireproof materials. SILACOLL 160 is temperature resistant up to> 1000 C. SILACOLL 160 is water based and therefore free of organic solvents. SILACOLL 160 is slightly pasty and can be applied either manually or by the aid of pumps and dosage instruments. Depending on the substrates which have to be glued, SILACOLL 160 builds up a sufficient wet adhesion, that makes in many cases a static support during the drying out phase redundant. In order that the curing process can occur properly, it is necessary that the water, which is bound in SILACOLL 160, can evaporate easily. In cases where this is not possible due to construction details (closed systems for example), SILACOLL 160 should be mixed with a hardener such as SILACOLL 800. This hardener provides that SILACOLL 160 can cure properly. Fully cured, with correct processing and appropriate substrates shear strength above 5 N/mm 2 can be achieved. During the curing process SILACOLL 160 will become hard and is not ductile any more. SILACOLL 160: is absolutely incombustible is temperature resistant up to > 1000 C is VOC free shows good resistance against many chemicals is environmentally friendly is open for water vapour diffusion is open for water diffusion Seite 1
Typical Applications SILACOLL 160 is very suitable to bond mineral based materials, metal, wood, paper/cardboard and glass. A typical application is the machinable gluing of different insulation materials. SILACOLL 160 can also be sprayed or by roller applied. In systems, where the water, which is bound in SILACOLL 160, can not evaporate, it is recommended to add (with the aid of a dosage system) the hardener SILACOLL 800. Fire classification EN 13501 Fire class A2 s1, d0 / Classification report FLT KE4246109 VKF Schweiz (Swiss Association of Cantonal Fire Insurance Companies): 19746 Typical Physical Properties Appearance: beige Odour: slightly, characteristic Solid content: approx. 50% m/m Flammability: incombustible ISO 1182 Rheology: slightly thixotropic behaviour Viscosity: 3 100-3 700 mpa*s Haake Rheometer, 20 C, 25 min, τ = 30.24 Pa Density: 1.53 g/cm 3 bei 20 C Directions for Use Usually a single application of SILACOLL 160 on one substrate will be sufficient. After the application of the adhesive, both substrates should be put together and a good pressure should be applied for few seconds over the whole surface. Normally the adhesive develops a sufficient wet adhesion within a few seconds to assure the necessary fixing. The setting process for nonabsorbing materials, such as metal, glass, etc. is normally a little bit slower. In case of such nonabsorbing surfaces it is important that the substrate which shall be glued on this surface is open for water vapour diffusion (e.g. mineral wool). In systems where the water, which is bound in SILACOLL 160, can not evaporate, the curing process will not take place. In such systems it is necessary to mix the SILACOLL compound with a hardener such as SILACOLL 800 prior application. The ideal processing temperature is around 20 C and should always be between +5 C and 30 C. Additionally, the relative air humidity should be within 20% to 80%. Dry conditions shorten the open time, very wet conditions prolonging the curing time. SILACOLL 160 can be applied manually or with appropriate machinery. Seite 2
Surface Preparation The substrate / underground must be free of dust, free of oil or grease, stable and dry. It is recommended to clean it with a soft broom or brush. It is not recommended to use SILACOLL 160 on surfaces which are coated with paints or other coatings. Consumption Depending on the way SILACOLL 160 is applied and on the type of surfaces used, the consumption is normally in the range of 0.2 1 kg/m 2. For critical applications it is recommended to make some trials prior application. In case of special applications please contact the technical support of vanbaerle. Curing Time The values in the following table are indicatory. Data were determined by gluing aluminium/aluminium. Time 23 C Remark Open time [Min] 20-30 Maximum time between application and fixing the surfaces (skin formation of the glue) Early strength [Day] 5 10 Time recommended between gluing and further processing (approx. 50% of the final bonding strength achieved) Curing time [Day] 20-40 Final bonding strength is reached It is recommended to process SILACOLL 110 at temperatures between 5 C and 30 C with 20-80% relative humidity. Cleaning Tools can be easily cleaned with water, as long as the adhesive has not dried completely. SILACOLL 160 dissolves faster in hot water than in cold water. Dry adhesive residues can be removed by soaking in hot water or by a mechanical way. Do not use any organic solvents: the adhesive is absolutely insoluble in those. When combining SILACOLL 160 with the hardener SILACOLL 800 in a specific ratio, it is possible that the dry glue exerts a certain water resistance. In those cases the soaking of such dried glue is not possible anymore and mechanical cleaning is the only solution. It is recommended to use working tools made of synthetics, because dried out SILACOLL 160 can be more easily removed than on metal surfaces. SILACOLL 160 can corrode glass irreversibly. Clean immediately with plenty of water. Do not rub, otherwise the fillers contained in SILACOLL 160 will roughen the glass. Seite 3
Typical Applications In order to assure perfect bonding and self-consistent setting without heating, one of the substrates must be absorbent and open for vapour diffusion. The following materials can be glued successfully with SILACOLL 160: Mineral based materials Metals 1 Open pored foams of various polymers rock wool 2 and glass wool 3 glass ceramics, clay minerals fireclay bricks anodises aluminium sheet of metal and steel aluzinc galvanised steel DOW Styrofoam IB-X Swisspor EPS Perimeter Swisspor EPS 80 mm Swisspor XPS Jackodur KF300 Gefiniert GL Wood wood fibre panels type Pavatex planed wood untreated wood materials 4, cork 1 All metallic surfaces must be free of any coatings such as varnish, powder coating, waxes, oils or paint. 2 Rockfon Facette panels shall only be glued on absorbent surfaces 3 Except Isover Thermo-Plus and Iso-Swiss (brown) 4 As long as there is only a low content of organic glue on the surface. We recommend to perform always preliminary adhesion test. For gluing where neither panel nor surface is absorbent or open for vapour diffusion it is recommended to mix SILACOLL 160 with the hardener SILACOLL 800 prior application. Storage SILACOLL 150 is sensitive to frost. With appropriate storage in the original and unopened containers at temperatures between +5 C and +30 C, SILACOLL 150 will remain stable for 2 years. Frozen adhesive can be made serviceable by intense mixing after defrosting. The surface liquid that can appear during storage must be homogenized by stirring before application. vanbaerle Your partner for high quality silicates. In 1888, vanbaerle started out as a soap factory. Ten years after its foundation, the company moved to its present location in Münchenstein and developed into a dynamic and innovative enterprise. With its business units Hygiene and Silicates, it is represented in more than 50 countries in Europe, Asia and North America. The company has 134 employees in its headquarters and its affiliated companies. The production plants of the business units Hygiene and Silicates, the laboratories for development, application technology and quality management, as well as the warehouses and the administration buildings are all located at the Münchenstein site. We have been transforming basic minerals into valuable products for more than 100 years. In this time, we have optimized the established products and introduced many innovations. Today, silicates are important additives for a whole range of industries and can be found in many products. Silicates are used in welding rods, waste paper recycling, and detergents. They can bind pigments and cement, glue materials and protect and isolate buildings. And the good news is that the list of applications keeps constantly growing.
