THE UFUR CONNECTION What is sulfur doing in natural rubber latex or nitrile gloves, anyway? ulfur is added to the natural rubber latex or nitrile dipping compound to assist the conversion of the polymer into a more durable material. ulfur modifies the latex or nitrile polymer by forming cross-links between the individual polymer chains. This allows the gloves to have superior mechanical properties. In the early 1830s, Nathaniel Hayward and Friedrich udersdorf discovered that natural rubber latex lost its viscosity, when treated with sulfur. In 1839 Charles Goodyear developed the process of adding sulfur to latex compounds and using heat, creating the process known as Vulcanization. This discovery revolutionized the use of rubber in industry it could be formed to precise shapes and dimensions, and recovered quickly from mechanical deformities. The gloves in this catalog are manufactured utilizing processes which do not require sulfur. Page 11 ulfur Free Gloves
