FLEET DRIVER RISK MANAGEMENT 2017 edriving FLEET has devised ten points of action for 2017, aimed at creating safer drivers, safer roads and a reduced Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for all size organizations and fleets.

1 DEVELOP A FLEET RISK MANAGEMENT STRATEGY Fleet risk management should be approached formally and with focus. Your organization should have documented policies, procedures and strategies to help manage the risks associated with the safety of employees while driving. Your duty of care for employees who drive for work purposes is a legal obligation that has wide-reaching benefits if done right, and considerable liability exposures if ignored. Reduced injuries and collisions, near misses, insurance premiums and overall fleet costs (Total Cost of Ownership), combined with improved employee safety, morale and behavior behind the wheel, are just some of the benefits of a successful fleet risk management strategy. Your policies and procedures should form part of an overall safe driving culture that includes everyone, from executive level to hourly employees. Assemble your team representatives from your Board, Fleet, Environmental Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S), HR, Legal, Insurance, Risk and Privacy and prepare for action. If you start now, the foundation will be in place before the summer. 2 DEVISE A MANAGEMENT ACTION PLAN Solely introducing a fleet risk management strategy is not enough. It must be managed effectively. This might involve: Assessing road-related risks facing your employees Ensuring there is visible top level commitment to road safety within your company Establishing roles and responsibilities for road safety and setting up procedures for cooperation Having systems in place to enable you to manage road-related risks for example, procedures for checking driver licenses, ensuring vehicles are maintained/serviced correctly Monitoring driver behavior and performance Providing targeted and ongoing training to drivers Regularly reviewing and revising policies and procedures Find out how Nestlé Mexico manages road safety on some of the most dangerous roads in Latin America: /case-studies/nestle-mexico/

3 BENCHMARK FLEET SAFETY Benchmarking can be a highly effective way of improving road safety in your organization. It helps you understand what you are doing well, but more importantly, what you could do better. Identifying good practices from comparisons with others is enormously valuable and encourages innovative solutions. Benchmarking also assists with compliance against legal requirements and standards. Visit www.fleetsafetybenchmarking.net to enter your data and receive immediate feedback, at no cost. 4 IMPLEMENT A DRIVER LICENSE CHECKING PROCEDURE Having a robust procedure in place for driver license checks forms an integral part of your fleet risk management strategy. Driver license checks help to reduce risk exposure by: Ensuring employees are driving legally and within their capabilities Helping you to take reasonable actions to meet your legal and moral responsibilities Reducing the likelihood of legal action against your company Eliminating the possibility of collisions caused by drivers who are unqualified, unauthorized, or ineligible to drive Ensuring your employees are adequately insured It is important to review your procedures for driver license checks regularly to ensure you address any changes to the rules and regulations governing eligibility to drive. 5 IDENTIFY AT-RISK DRIVERS Across most organizations, approximately 10% of fleet drivers are classified as high risk. Being able to identify your at-risk drivers is a crucial element of a fleet risk management strategy. Knowing who is at risk on the road, and why, helps you to predict on-road performance and implement driver training that will really make a difference. Groundbreaking evaluation research studies undertaken in 2003 and 2004 by university research teams in the UK showed clear statistical links between drivers performance on edriving s RoadRISK assessment and their reported collision outcomes. The studies confirmed RoadRISK s ability to accurately predict a driver s risk and the related likelihood of incurring a collision using inputs related to personal background, driving history, travel patterns, vehicle history, attitudes, driving behaviors, and skills. By establishing driver risk levels for all your drivers, you can provide individualized training based on risk classification. This has been made easier with edriving FLEET s new RoadRISK PLUS, which offers RoadRISK, the research-validated driver risk assessment tool, plus 12 RiskCOACH training courses custom selected to meet your organization s needs. 6 REINFORCE DEFENSIVE DRIVING TECHNIQUES 94% of all road incidents are caused by driver attitudes and behaviors rather than lack of knowledge (NHTSA). What does this mean for fleet managers? It means helping all drivers rethink the common hazardous attitudes and behaviors they may have adopted often without realizing. It means reinforcing the core principles of defensive driving to your employees who drive for work, even those not identified as high-risk. Principles such as anticipating other drivers actions, identifying threats before they become problems and avoiding risky behavior behind the wheel that leads to distracted driving. It starts with awareness, noted Ed Dubens, EVP and General Manager, edriving FLEET. Certainly, all drivers are going to experience frustration, impatience, lack of focus, and even occasional anger while driving. The goal is to equip drivers with tools to manage their emotions, challenges, and choices before they lead to destructive actions. Learn more about helping your drivers develop the right attitudes and behaviors with edriving s innovative One More Second defensive driving course: /fleet/one-more-second/ 7 EXTEND BEYOND THE WORKPLACE Developing a fleet risk management system and effectively managing work-related road safety is excellent, but what about when your employees drive home? Drive on the weekend? Or travel with family? A truly exceptional company road safety strategy will go beyond the legal requirements, beyond the necessary steps to reduce workplace collisions and lower insurance costs. It will encompass the safety of employees outside of work, as well as the safety of their families. How do you achieve this? By creating a road safety culture and instilling in employees safe driving habits that they will take home with them. Remember, safe driving practices are best reinforced 24/7, which means at home and on the weekends, as well as during work hours. Visit www.onemoresecond.net for road safety news, guidance and resources for the whole family.

8 USE TELEMATICS TO PUT EMPLOYEES ON A DRIVING FITNESS PLAN It s important that driver risk is assessed continually. Why? The way drivers accelerate, brake, corner, and use their cell phones all contribute to their risk level on the road. Having access to real-time driving analytics gives drivers immediate feedback, and provides you the opportunity to address problems promptly, placing you in greater control of your organization s risk level. In early 2017, edriving FLEET is releasing Mentor SM, the first smartphone telematics solution that not only scores driver behavior, but focuses on IMPROVING it by prescribing short, engaging coaching modules to address drivers weaker areas. Think of it as a driving fitness program that challenges drivers to weigh their results after each drive, encourages them to break bad habits, and stretches them into better behaviors. Mentor s centerpiece is a new universal risk rating, developed in partnership with leading analytics software firm FICO. Just as the FICO Score is the standard measure of consumer credit risk, so, too, will the FICO Safe Driving Score provide a measure that facilitates consistency and fairness in driver safety assessment. Find out more about Mentor and the myriad ways it can augment a fleet management system: /fleet/telematics-enabled-solutions/ 9 REMAIN PROACTIVE ABOUT DRIVER SAFETY Fleet risk management requires an ongoing commitment. Policies and procedures need to be reviewed periodically and results monitored continually. Again, this is where technology assists greatly, by tracking data and immediately alerting you to issues that need addressing. You should also remain current and frequent with communications. For example: Sharing positive results with employees Rewarding safe driving performance Issuing newsletters/company updates that reinforce the commitment to road safety and the rationale behind it Communicating to local community/customers that yours is a road safety-conscious company

10 REDUCE FLEET COSTS No doubt this should be one of your top priorities for 2017, so you re probably wondering why it is last on the list. There s good reason! If you implement the other nine resolutions, your fleet s Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) will reduce, significantly. Of course, results are not instantaneous. Follow these steps, though, and, by the end of 2017, you should be well on your way to realizing tangible results, including being in position to predict cost savings for the years ahead.
