ANNOUNCEMENT AGS (HK) 1-day Seminar on Grouting and Deep Mixing Theme This 1-day seminar aims to provide an overview and update of grouting practices. The seminar will highlight the use of grouting in different types of soil and rock, and the latest technologies. Drawing from experiences of Hong Kong, Asian and International projects, and with case studies, the speakers will provide lessons learnt and guidance for best practice. About the Speakers : Donald A. Bruce Ph.D, C.Eng. (Geosystems L.P.) Dr Bruce is a world renowned grouting expert. He has been an invited lecturer on grouting for numerous short courses, seminars, universities and conferences. Dr. Bruce has been involved in rock and soil grouting since 1973, and has experience of grouting for dams, tunnels, quarries and deep foundation applications throughout the world both as a contractor and a consultant; including chemical grouting on the MTR Island Line. He is a former Chairman of the Grouting Committee of the Geo-Institute of ASCE, and the recipient of three national engineering awards in the U.S. Dr. Bruce was educated in Scotland and has degrees in Geology and Civil Engineering. He has worked on projects on every continent and, for the last 18 years, has been President of Geosystems L.P., a specialty construction consultancy based in the USA. He has published almost 300 technical papers and three textbooks. Michael J. Byle D.GE, P.E., F.ASCE (Tetra Tech Inc.) Mr. Byle has more than 35 years of experience in grouting and has completed investigations, design, and execution of grouting projects of all types. He has held a variety of positions within ASCE organizations including: Chair of Grouting Committee, Member and Interim Chair of the Technical Coordination Council, Chair of the Education Task Force of the Geo-Institute, as well as chair of Grouting and Ground Treatment 2003, Co-Chair of Sinkholes and the Environmental and Engineering Impacts of Karst 2008, and Co-Chair of Grouting and Deep Mixing 2012. He is currently President of the International Conference Organization for Grouting (ICOG). Mr Byle has given presentations on grouting at various universities including: University of Alabama at Huntsville, Johns Hopkins University, Northwestern University, University of Washington, Villanova University, Drexel University, and University of Michigan. He has instructed numerous short courses on grouting, and karst; and presented more than 20 technical papers at specialty conferences on various topics. Mr. Byle is a founding member of the Geo-Institute and Delaware Valley Geo- Institute. He is a member of American Society for Testing and Materials, ADSC, Deep Foundations Institute. Mr. Byle obtained his Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a Geotechnical specialty from the University of Michigan and a Master of Science in Engineering with a Geotechnical concentration from the Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan. He is currently National Discipline Lead for Civil and Geotechnical Engineering for Tetra Tech Inc in the USA. He is responsible for technical management of corporate engineering services, as well as project management and expert consulting. Tetra Tech is a leading provider of consulting, engineering, and technical services worldwide. Nick Shirlaw (Golder Associates) Nick Shirlaw has 40 years of experience, mostly in underground construction. He is an Associate with Golder Associates (HK) Ltd. Nick worked for a grouting contractor (Cementation Ground Engineering) in the UK, before going to work in Hong Kong in 1979. He spent 6 years supervising grouting for the Hong Kong MTR, on the Tsuen Wan and Island Lines. His MSc thesis was on grouting for the MTR, based on the Hong Kong experience. He has been involved in grouting projects in Taipei, Canada and the USA. Recently, he has been advising contractors on rock fissure grouting and chemical grouting in Hong Kong and Singapore. Knut F. Garshol (AECOM) Knut Garshol is currently Senior Resident Engineer at HATS2A, responsible for grouting for ground water control for the 20 km of subsea tunneling under both contracts of the project. Knut has more than 40 years of experience within geological engineering, covering positions with contractors, consulting companies, major solutions suppliers and in design review and site supervision. He has worked in Europe, Saudi Arabia, USA and South America as well as Asia. Luigi B. Russo (Trevi Construction Co. Ltd.) Mr Russo is Technical Manager for Trevi Construction in Hong Kong, after spending over twenty years working for Trevi and Rodio, both leading Italian foundation specialist companies. After graduating from Portsmouth University (U.K.) he has worked in various foundations activities, mostly in Europe, Africa, Middle East and in the Far East in the last four years.
