1 Prject title HWTS and Hygiene Prmtin in schls 2 Prject Backgrund The prject bjectives are t develp a target-grup riented training manual and t reach 9 000 students prmting HWTS in 40 schls f Blivia. The fllwing pre-cnditins led t the decisin t carry ut the prject: Key rle f schls in sciety Schls are a key envirnment fr scial marketing. With their enrmus ptential t raise awareness and influence the future generatin they play an imprtant rle in bringing abut behaviural changes and prmting better health. A husehld water treatment prgram in schls creates a triple impact: -> It will cmplement HWTS prmtin effrts in lcal cmmunities and supprt a mre cnsistent practice and cnsumptin f safe drinking water and therewith lead t a significant reductin f diarrhea and increased attendance at schl. -> It will encurage students t becme agents f change fr imprving water, sanitatin and hygiene practices in their families and cmmunities. -> It will prepare the students fr healthy living as adults. Experience with schl prjects SODIS and their lcal partners already carried ut succesful schl prjects in different wrld regins (e.g. Blivia, Nepal). A cmbined effrt f all stakehlders will increase a whlistic HWTS prmtin apprach that transcends single technlgy prmtin prgrams. Substantial demand and strng ffer Mre than half f all primary schls in the develping cuntries with available data d nt have adequate water facilities and nearly tw thirds lack adequate sanitatin (UNICEF, Annual Reprt 2009). The cllabratin f SODIS with lcal partners allws the use f existing structures fr the sustainable, cst-effective implementatin f the schl prgram and the ffer f different water treatment methds. With the new training manual we can pursue an applicatin-riented apprach. Integrated water quality tests will shw the need t carry ut a schl prgram. The backgrund infrmatin fr the teachers will give them the knwledge and supprt t integrate the slutin methds int the daily rutine f a schl day. The students can capture the relatinship between pllutin f water, inadequate hygiene and pr sanitatin by experimenting and practicing the slutin methds. Scaling up The new cmmunicatin tls and the experience f this prject will build the base fr future schl prgrams. - 1 -
