Our services span the life of a project, from early planning and design through to decommissioning. Dam design all types Our reputation for innovative, quality engineering extends to all forms of dam design, including: New dams earthfill, earth core/rockfill, concrete faced rockfill, rollercompacted concrete, concrete arch, gravity and excavated storages Raising and strengthening existing dams, upgrading (including spillway capacity) and remedial works Feasibility studies, site investigations, concept and detail design, cost estimating, economic optimisation and asset valuation studies. Dam safety management and risk assessment Our dam engineers perform safety inspections in accordance with the local dam safety regulations, and help dam owners to prepare dam safety emergency plans and operation manuals. Services provided include safety evaluation and quantitative risk assessment: seismic and hydrological risk, gate reliability, stability and structural analysis, and public safety risk. Water intakes, outlets and water diversion Our team of engineers design integral, free standing and multilevel withdrawal intakes for dam and hydropower projects. We meet seismic design criteria, provide selective reservoir elevation withdrawal and help regulate downstream water temperatures. Water conveyance systems Whether it is reducing head losses or increasing power generation, our water conveyance expertise can meet all project goals with demonstrated experience. Our team has designed canals, pipelines and tunnels in a full range of capacity for the smallest to largest systems using a variety of construction materials and applications. Operation and maintenance Our team of engineers offers consulting to help sustain operations over the life of a dam or hydropower facility, producing optimal performance and efficiency. We are available for emergency, quick response needs, as well as support through planned outages and maintenance activities. River works and structures Cover image: Warragamba Dam, NSW This Image: Shasta Lake Dam, USA We investigate and design a wide range of weirs, regulators, fishways, channels, enlargements, water savings works, environmental enhancements, river bank stabilisation and erosion and flood control levees.
Australia Pacific LNG Ponds Design Origin Energy, Australia Australia Pacific LNG one of the largest producers of natural gas in eastern Australia is converting brackish (salty) waste water into a resource useable for industrial, construction, and irrigation purposes. The design scope for this project included earthen ponds for storage, raw feed, brine reject, and brine concentrate water ponds from advanced water treatment facilities. The result increases water recovery and lessens waste volumes for communities surrounding the Surat Basin. Our team designed more than 25 earthen ponds, ranging in capacity up to 900ML and 12ha area. The ponds have typical embankment heights up to 8m and embankment lengths of up to 1.5km. The ponds are lined with geomembrane, with an underlying leak detection system. In addition to the design of all pond elements, we provided construction oversight. CHW Dam Safety Advisor Central Highlands Water (CHW), Australia Our engineers undertake comprehensive surveillance inspections and annual intermediate safety inspections of CHW s dams, and assist in prioritising dam upgrades using a risk management approach. In addition, the detailed design has been completed for safety upgrade works for Wilsons Dam and Beales Dam involving the provision of retrofitted filter zones and construction of weighting berms. We were also commissioned in the role of Superintendent for the construction of safety upgrade works at Musical Gully Dam.
Our experience is based on wide ranging global and local projects large and small. Clyde and Roxburgh Dam Engineering Support Services Contact Energy, New Zealand Since 2003, our team has been assisting Contact Energy with its safety management plan for Clyde Dam. It is the largest concrete gravity dam in NZ, with a dam height of approximately 100m and a dam volume of over 1 million cubic metres. It has an installed generation capacity of 432MW. Services include conducting performance reporting, dam inspections, technical support on operational rules and engineering advice on works associated with the review of seismic motions for the dam from updated studies of faulting on the Dunstan fault. We also perform similar services for the 1950s constructed Roxburgh Dam, a 75m high concrete gravity dam, with an installed generation capacity of 320MW. In addition we provided technical witnesses to support Contact Energy s application for resource consents to operate its dams and reservoirs. Opuha Dam Downstream Weir Enhancement Opuha Water Limited, New Zealand Our experts were engaged on the detailed design, construction documents and construction inspection for the lowering of the crest of an existing concrete spillway and installation of a 1.8m high Obermeyer Gate. We were also responsible for obtaining building consents and construction completion documentation from the regulatory authority.
Warragamba Dam Raising Stage 2 Study Infrastructure NSW, (insw) Australia Infrastructure NSW engaged our team to explore the feasibility of raising the dam by 14 metres, and to investigate alternatives for building a new dam to replace the existing one. We leveraged our dam experts in Australia, the USA and New Zealand to form a team with local knowledge of the key issues and global experience in raising dam wall heights. The team worked closely with insw as well as stakeholders from Water NSW and the Department of Commerce (NSW Public Works) to assess all options and deliver a solution that protects the surrounding community. EGW Dam Safety Advisor East Gippsland Water (EGW), Australia Our experts have been working on Comprehensive Surveillance Inspections and yearly Intermediate Safety Inspections for EGW s16 water storage facilities, many within residential areas. We have also completed a detailed safety review of Nicholson Dam which included both deterministic stability analysis and probabilistic stability analysis, hydrological and dam break modelling, and detailed quantitative risk assessment. We have also undertaken various levels of design work for safety upgrades to the water storage facilities. This includes the design of embankment filter buttresses, embankment conduit upgrades (filter diaphragms) and spillway improvements. Nadarivatu Hydropower Scheme Fiji Electricity Authority The 42MW Nadarivatu Hydropower Station was recently constructed in the remote central area of Viti Levu in Fiji. The project was complex and consisted of a concrete gravity buttress weir, tunnel, penstock and surface powerhouse. As the owner s engineer, we provided full design services covering all aspects of the project from geotechnical and materials investigations, hydrology and flood assessment, mechanical, electrical, transmission line and switchyard, communications, controls through to civil, structural, construction supervision and commissioning. Oroville Dam Service Spillway Repairs California Water Authority, USA Our experts are involved with the hydraulic analysis, red-design and construction of repairs to the main spillway at the Oroville Dam following the February 2017 floods that caused significant damage to the both the main and emergency spillways and prompted the evacuation of more than 188,000 residents from the area. At 770 feet in height, the Oroville Dam is the nation s tallest earthen dam and impounds 3.5M acre-feet of water making it the second largest man-made lake in California. Panama Canal Embankment Dam, Locks Design and Construction Grupo Unidos Por el Canal (GUPC), Panama Our services were engaged by the GUPC as the lead design firm for the Panama Canal Third Set of Locks project. Our lock design specialists delivered a system that enables high throughput, efficient operation and maintenance, with minimal water consumption, all within the stringent technical requirements and specifications. The $3.12 billion Third Set of Locks effectively doubles the capacity of the Canal, providing significant benefits to the local, regional and global economies.
San Vicente Dam Raise San Diego County Water Authority, USA We provided final design and engineering services for the largest raise of a concrete dam in the U.S. and the first major raise of a concrete dam using roller-compacted concrete (RCC) in the world. The project raised the existing dam by 35 metres and added enough water storage to address the region s need for both emergency water storage and use during extended periods of drought, as part of the San Diego County Water Authority s Emergency Water Storage Project.
