Where a carton with mixed sizes occurs, the quantity for each size must be clearly stated on the outer carton information label in the carton unit quantity box e.g. Size Qty 5 1 6 1 7 2 8 1 Outer Carton Specifications: The DC uses conveyors to move cartons between functional areas and requires specific carton sizes to ensure no problems are experienced. Wherever possible, the dimensions for all delivery cartons must follow the size guidelines specified below: Cartons MUST NOT exceed the below maximum measurements Carton Quality Any product that has been wrapped or covered in plastic or other material must be wrapped or covered tightly and securely, with no protrusions or exposed sticky labels, allowing proper product flow. The convey-ability of the product is based upon having a reasonably evenly distributed weight. Items which may not convey reliably are those with the following characteristics: Uneven carton base soft cardboard or cartons with banding or strapping Open or improperly sealed containers Side or bottom which has concave or convex distortion Protrusions on the sides or bottom Uneven weight distribution or shifting centre of gravity Not rigid enough to maintain shape Cardboard & Filling Outer cartons must not be reused cartons but can be from recycled card. Outer cartons must be easy to open when required, without damaging contents and/or inner cartons, and allow easy removal of all units within Cartons must be capable of supporting a stack of similar product up to two metres high Cartons must not be under filled as this may cause crushing of contents Internal dividers must be used as necessary Approved by: Sarah Winslet Date: 19 Sept 13 Page 4
Cartons should provide protection and security for the contents whilst using the minimum amount of material necessary to achieve this. Only the following forms of fill material are acceptable:bubble Wrap and Air-Pac. Cardboard or corrugated boards are only to be used as separators or for protective purposes The gauge and type of cardboard used and the box construction must be suitable to contain the weight of the items within and when stacked onto pallets.the minimum specification is 3 ply double wall corrugated B flute cardboard Carton Sealing All folded flaps must be sealed with self-adhesive sealing tape no less than 50mm wide, to allow easy opening/removal of product by hand An extra bag or layer of paper should be placed at the top and bottom of each carton to prevent sealing tape sticking to packed goods When BDCM1 cartons are used, a facing board must be used to avoid accidental damage should the carton be opened from the side Folded or tucked flaps are not sufficient as they may open when handled Staples MUST NOT be used to seal any packaging as this represents a health and safety risk No banding tape should be used on cartons except in extreme circumstances and by prior agreement with the Logistics department. Cartons shrouded with Hessian or cloth or any secured with metal strapping/ large metal staples WILL NOT be accepted Any other sealing methods must be agreed with the DC through the Logistics department in advance Carton Weights All cartons must be within the weight ranges of 5kgs (minimum) and 20kgs (maximum) Carton Orientation We require the flaps on a carton to be along the longest dimension and central within the width of a carton. Please see below for an example of our requirements: Outer Carton Label Locations Label Location on Cartons There must be one label meeting the required specifications attached to the short end of each carton. The label must be clearly legible and undamaged, and clearly visible when positioned on the pallet. The label must be facing outwards when positioned on the pallet as per the below example. Carton Dimensions Length is the largest dimension (minimum 300mm, Ideal maximum 600mm, absolute maximum 800mm) Width is the 2nd largest dimension (minimum 200mm, ideal maximum 400mm, absolute maximum 500mm) Height is the smallest dimension (minimum 150mm, ideal maximum 400mm, absolute maximum 400mm) Carton dimensions should always be oriented in the sequence: 1st - Length, 2nd - Width, 3rd - Height. These dimensions are maximums and any curvature or variation of profile should be contained within these dimensions. Carton opening should always be on the length (as shown above) 4.
