Special coatings for everyday life. Solutions for Elastomeric Coatings
SPECIAL COATINGS FOR EVERYDAY LIFE Solutions for Elastomeric Coatings 3 Solutions for Elastomeric Coatings Trends & Challenges The aesthetic aspect of beautiful facades expressed in a very low tendency for dirt pickup combined with optimum elasticity to prevent the system from cracks is the most challenging compromise to find in the field of Elastomeric Coatings. Intense climatic conditions and suboptimal construction methods lead to a loss of integrity in mineral substrates and often cause the failure of the entire coating system. Cracks appear, the adhesion is lost, and efflorescence appears due to migration of salt onto the surface. In the field of EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finishing Systems), the installation of the panels often causes irregularities due to insufficient alignment of the substrates or the panels. Another potential drawback is the formation of micro-cracks over time, coming from an unsatisfying water vapor permeability and a lack of elasticity of the top coat. Attractive niche markets, such as the renovation of horizontal roofs with elastomeric coatings, as well as dedicated solutions for elastomeric plasters offer a range of possibilities where state of the art solutions can increase the performance of existing standards. Expertise & Know-how BASF s long-term industry experts provide indepth knowledge going beyond tailoring raw materials for paints BASF offers formulation knowhow. Our comprehensive portfolio for exterior coatings ranges from organic (acrylic) binders via additives like defoamers, rheology modifiers, pigment dispersing agents and coalescents, functional extenders such as calcinated clays to the broadest offering in organic and inorganic pigments and pigment preparations. Understanding the interactions between these building-blocks and drawing the right conclusions makes all the difference giving us a competitive edge. We create innovative and sustainable solutions. We constantly foster contacts along the value chain for example with DIY experts, professional painters and renowned architects, allowing us to track the latest developments in the market. Technologies Amongst our 100% water-based binder portfolio we offer styrene acrylics and pure acrylics. Tailored products with Tg below 0 C enable usage in elastomeric coatings for demanding applications. They can be formulated without using plasticizers and perfectly work with other binders of the portfolio in order to increase elasticity of harder, conventional coatings.
4 SPECIAL COATINGS FOR EVERYDAY LIFE Solutions for Elastomeric Coatings BASF Solutions Acronal PLUS 6257 comes with a double crosslinking functionality and can be used to formulate high-performance coatings with excellent elasticity, also at lower temperatures and at higher PVCs. The adhesion of the paint system on mineral substrates, such as ceramic tiles, can be improved even further by combining it with Acronal S 813, a silan-functionalized, harder dispersion. In case of facing a deteriorated or not perfectly consolidated substrate, the use of deep penetrating primers, such as Acronal A 508, is critical. Acronal S 562, Acronal 567 D or Acronal S 456 still offer a very good elasticity at temperatures to low tier elastomeric coatings. Top-quality elastomeric coatings both for renovating exterior walls as well as protecting new buildings can be formulated with BASF s range of solutions. These can be used to bridge cracks in walls, and they provide an effective barrier to moisture. Their low dirt pick-up ensures that surfaces retain their aesthetic appearance for a long time. From our broad range of formulation additives, Rheovis PE 1330 and Rheovis PU 1214 perfectly work as thickeners in the high shear range, whereas Dispex AA 4030 and Dispex CX 4320 are the most suitable pigment dispersers. Dispex AA 4030 has good dispersing properties and low water absorption, Dispex CX 4320 is of high hydrophobic character and provides excellent dispersing properties. Foamaster MO 2114 improves defoaming behavior of formulations due to its outstanding deaeration, particularly in high viscous systems.

About BASF Dispersions & Pigments in Architectural Coatings At BASF Dispersions & Pigments, a team of passionate and experienced professionals provides innovative and sustainable solutions to the paints and coatings industry. In depth know-how and industry expertise are combined with a comprehensive product portfolio including polymer dispersions, resins, pigments and additives. The Verbund principle is applied to know-how by linking the intellectual capital of The Chemical Company, the understanding of interactions of individual raw materials, formulation technologies and application know-how with customer needs. Scientifically sound solutions that meet market needs are developed and launched in a concerted effort. Among the parameters that are systematically reflected and jointly balanced with business partners are coloration, performance requirements, sustainable development and cost-efficiency.» Elastomeric Coatings remain the best solution to protect buildings. Mineral surfaces may have the tendency to crack in areas with a high variation in temperature, especially in case of buildings that do not require external insulation. They form a reliable, permanent, flexible and impermeable skin around a building, covering all surface irregularities and offering a high protection to look better for longer. BASF is the No. 1 supplier and the technology leader for this kind of paints.«luis Santos
